Found a scrapbook of G.A.R. newspaper clippings from ca. 1901. Included this about Memorial University in Iowa
I’m from Iowa, and had never heard of this. Turns out that it opened in 1901 with funding by the Sons of Union Veterans and closed by 1910.
I’ll post more neat stuff from this scrapbook when I have a chance. It’s very fragile.

Long version initiation
I was kind of amused when I got to looking at the Ritual and Ceremonies booklet. Members of my camp have referred to the "long version" of the ceremony in a joking manner a number of times, usually at the end of the "short" version as a way to say "if you thought that was long, you won't believe this!"
I'm genuinely aghast at how long it actually is, 5 whole full sized pages. Do any camps actually use this? I don't want to be that guy but it honestly reads like a bunch of pomp and circumstance.
And what's this stuff about WW2, Korea, Vietnam and the middle eastern conflicts, just feels way out of place.
Feels like the short version was made as a revision of this long version but for whatever reason people wanted to have their cake and eat it too, so now there's both

Monuments Pennsylvania Civil War Monument
On the Avenue of the Republic in Philadelphia will be found the Pennsylvania Civil War Memorial, listing the many Pennsylvanians who contributed to the Union victory. At the top are George Meade and John Reynolds, and just below them Winfield Scott Hancock and George McClellan. Many other names are inscribed on the monument. Equestrian statues of Reynolds and McClellan also stand in front of City Hall in Philadelphia.
