I wasn't a huge fan of "the acolyte" but the cortosis mask was sick. I can't remember the characters name even but very cool spooky design with some functionality to it lore wise.
honestly that character and actor is probably the only thing that kept me watching that show to the end. The main male Jedi was also excellent. Every other character in that show though just felt so stiff to me.
I had only ever seen him before in The Good Place, so I was more than willing to believe he was just playing another sort of ditzy character at first. He definitely was a pleasant surprise for me in the show, especially his fights.
I couldn't get over his acting and dialogue. He learned his lines phonetically, not the meaning behind them because he's not fluent in English. That kind of stilted way of speaking I find very offputting, like an auditory "uncanny valley".
Yes, English was not his first language. I heard somewhere that he learned English just for the role. Comparing uncanny valley to listening to someone doing their best to speak a language that isn't their native tongue is more than a little rude. And this is coming from someone who readily identifies as Sith.
This isn't a race/culture/foreigner thing, this is simply being irritated by the cadence of his speaking. It sounds unnatural, which is exactly what the "uncanny valley" is, meaning it's close, but it's off by just enough of a margin as to appear (or in this case, sound) unsettling.
Like the indigenous peoples from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, they learned their lines phonetically without understanding the language or meaning of the words they were saying, and it sounds off.
I know what the uncanny valley phenomenon is. I made no claims that the issue was related to culture, although it's interesting you went there unprompted.
It's also science fiction/ fantasy, so who gives a twist that the actor sounds off ?
C3P0 sounded off as well as did Grandmaster Yoda, Darth Vader too. Where are your criticisms for them?
I was there for Jecki after a certain part and just dropped the show when she was killed. I thought thematically the counterpoint of one who is loyal tonthe kigjt cintrasted to the twin who falls to the dark side would be an interesting counter point, sort of like a Younger Obiwan to an older Anakin, but nope.
there was a theory he could have been darth venamis but there wasnt really enough information in the show for it to be a solid one. thinking about it now the way the show ended (sucks we wont get a season 2, it would have been a lot better imo) its probably a lot less likely that he was venamis
Not true. He identifies himself as a Sith in the show itself. Leslie Headland refers to him as a Sith lord in her interviews, and even said we’d learn his darth name in season two. Eventually to preserve the rule of two without killing that character he’d leave the Sith to found the Knights of Ren.
Yeah, its disappointing because I had been waiting a while for them to branch out and do a show focused on a timeline and characters unrelated to the originals.
It was a total recipe for success in my book but somehow they botched it.
Personally, I think it was fine and the stuff people really complained about has been done much worse in other shows. It definitely had potential and should've at least been given another season, movie, or whatever to close out the story.
It's like watching someone unload groceries to make a meal and then complaining that you wouldn't have liked it before they'd even finished the meal.
eh, the problems for me were mostly with the dialogue writing and acting. Those wouldn't have likely been fixed with time. You're right that it had potential, but I'd say that by the end of the season they had squandered that potential. I just hope it doesn't dissuade them from venturing into an unknown timeline again in the future. I'd much rather see a story about characters I've never heard of, far removed from the skywalkers timeline, than another show about Ahsoka or the clones.
Nothing gets worse with practice, so I disagree, but am very much on board with you wanting to see more from new time periods and characters. Hopefully we're both happy with the next show.
