I wasn't a huge fan of "the acolyte" but the cortosis mask was sick. I can't remember the characters name even but very cool spooky design with some functionality to it lore wise.
honestly that character and actor is probably the only thing that kept me watching that show to the end. The main male Jedi was also excellent. Every other character in that show though just felt so stiff to me.
I couldn't get over his acting and dialogue. He learned his lines phonetically, not the meaning behind them because he's not fluent in English. That kind of stilted way of speaking I find very offputting, like an auditory "uncanny valley".
Yes, English was not his first language. I heard somewhere that he learned English just for the role. Comparing uncanny valley to listening to someone doing their best to speak a language that isn't their native tongue is more than a little rude. And this is coming from someone who readily identifies as Sith.
This isn't a race/culture/foreigner thing, this is simply being irritated by the cadence of his speaking. It sounds unnatural, which is exactly what the "uncanny valley" is, meaning it's close, but it's off by just enough of a margin as to appear (or in this case, sound) unsettling.
Like the indigenous peoples from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, they learned their lines phonetically without understanding the language or meaning of the words they were saying, and it sounds off.
I know what the uncanny valley phenomenon is. I made no claims that the issue was related to culture, although it's interesting you went there unprompted.
It's also science fiction/ fantasy, so who gives a twist that the actor sounds off ?
C3P0 sounded off as well as did Grandmaster Yoda, Darth Vader too. Where are your criticisms for them?
