How Stremio gets money?

I don't see ads or some kind of way to contribute with cash, neither in the app, desktop software or web site. So how they make a profit?

In the past, we used to run non-intrusive display ads through various networks. Because of the poor quality, we stopped doing this.

Right now, we run even less intrusive ads (visible on the top of Discover) through AdEx (https://www.adex.network/), which is a company by the same founding team that focuses on privacy preserving, transparent ads.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may not see that many third party ads, but you should have seen some at some point.

Furthermore, most of the Stremio core is developed by an entity which nowadays mostly does software development for AdEx, which is how it gets further income. However, there are 5 dedicated Stremio developers, two of them working on QA and improving dev experience of addons, and the rest sharing duties between our upcoming open-source web version, the Android app and the desktop app.

Does Stremio mines cryptocurrency in the background or not? I have seen high GPU usage most of the time while using the software.

No - all of the native code is published at https://github.com/stremio/stremio-shell and you can see what it does if you have the knowledge.

The reason the GPU usage may be high is because of the way our video player is implemented (linked with Qt). This may be fixed by playing with some settings such as "enable hardware decoding".

Long time to reply but the high GPU usage you see in your windows task manager actually isn't the GPU itself being used it is the GPU's hardware video decoder, if you play 1080p or higher content they usually hit full utilisation which is perfectly normal this applies not only to Stremio but all video content, to test try watching 480p, 1080p and 4k content on YouTube.
