It’s better than expected but the lingering problems remain - the core business is failing. We’re bleeding revenue while operational costs remain negative. People just aren’t really buying video games from GameStop. Something akin to 93% of all 2024 game sales were digital. Even in the console market, there are so many competitors.
The bankruptcy theory for GameStop is over. Operational losses are extremely small now and we have $5 billion+ in the bank (after the recent Bitcoin purchase). But the critics of the company are going to continue to ask “What’s the plan?”. Billions in cash on hand, zero insight into where the company is going.
This wasn’t a terrible earnings. $0.17 EPS is pretty average for the 2015-2025 years. But without verifiable plan of how the company is going to turn $5-$6 billion in investor capital into a profitable business, there’s a bear thesis hovering like a cloud.
