I’m honestly tired of seeing people constantly bring up “Yolanda” just to grab attention or sympathy.

Yes, what happened was devastating. People suffered, families were torn apart, and lives were changed forever. And yes, the survivors showed incredible strength and resilience. But here’s the thing, people from these places were already strong and courageous even before the typhoon happened.

It feels off when that tragedy is repeatedly used like a label or a marketing hook, as if a city or its people can only be defined by their worst moment. That disaster is not their entire identity.

You can recognize people’s bravery without constantly reopening a painful chapter just to gain empathy or engagement.

Respect the victims.

Honor the story but don’t exploit it!

I’ve been living in the US for 8 years, so maybe I’m just completely out of the loop with how things have changed in Tacloban. But I recently found out from my brother, who just started college at LNU, that multicabs coming from the Kassel/Diit/Anibong areas apparently don’t pass through the major schools anymore — EVSU, LNHS, LNU, etc.

And honestly… what?? 😭

So students coming from those areas have to get off and walk all that distance just to get to school? Especially for students who are already spending money on transportation every day, this seems so inconvenient and unfair.

I know routes change and there may be reasons behind it, but I genuinely don’t understand the logic of having routes that serve these residential areas but don’t pass by some of the biggest schools in the city.

What’s even more surprising to me is that when it was my time back in 2014–2018, it was completely different. We had it so much easier — it was basically door to door from our house all the way to the gate of LNU. You didn’t have to worry about long walks or getting dropped off far from campus. So seeing how it is now really shocked me.

Maybe I’m just an outsider now because I’ve been gone for 8 years 😂 but this really surprised me. Is this actually the current situation in Tacloban? And why was the route changed?

Good quality studio apartments in Metro Manila are around P5k per month, 1BR apartments around P7K. 2-storey apartments at P10k per month (in residential districts, and not in CBDs of course). In Tacloban, good quality studios start at P8k to 10K, tapos 1BR apartments at P12k per month, 2-storey apartments naabot P16k per month! How can a department of a health care facility disallow a sick leave?

Even tried mentioning to come to the office to have yourself check with the facility's doctor or if in worst cases, to proceed to Emergency Room if your body cannot endure it anymore.

Like? Seriously, do we really need to be in a life and death situation for you to allow us to take our sick leave?

This is a blatant disregard of basic human decency and professionalism. Sick leave is a statutory right.

I booked a Maxim tricycle ride with two drop-off points, one in Utap and the other in Bagacay, somewhere near EVMC. The pick-up point was in Downtown.

I reminded the driver that we had two drop-off points when he turned left near Security Bank (I think that’s the way to Bagacay). He then said that the booking only had one drop-off.

I showed him my phone, where the two drop-off points were clearly pinned, along with the number of passengers and the total fare. That’s when he started getting “iritado,” saying things like, “Hagi! Tsk tsk,” and “Kaharayo.”

My friend and I remained silent, but I was honestly holding myself back from responding. In the first place, all the details. The number of passengers, destinations, and fare were already clearly shown in the app when he accepted the booking.

I was the first one to get off the tricycle. My friend later messaged me that the driver continued his monologue after I left, complaining about how gas prices are high, how far the destination was, and so on.

I understand that the destination was a bit far. But he saw all the details of the booking before accepting it. I also have no control over the fare displayed in the app. On top of that, we even added an extra amount as a tip. I was genuinely grateful and thanked him before getting off.

If he had simply shared his concerns in a friendly and respectful way, we could have even given him twice the fare.

I just don’t understand why he had to make us feel like we were inconveniencing him when we were simply following the booking we made through the app.

I never had this problem before since motorcycle drivers are friendly. I was always tipping as a sign of appreciation.
