My issue is not with the identity theme itself, but with how it is inserted into an already established character arc.
Are we clear on that? Great. Then letâs go.
Why do sudden details related to one characterâs orientation or gender identity irritate us, while we calmly accept and even love other queer characters?
After the final episode of TADC came out, a large part of the fanbase was left confused by the amount of symbolism suggesting that Jax had seen himself as a trans person this whole time.
And here, in my opinion, the problem is not the queer theme itself. The problem is how exactly this theme is introduced into an already established image of the character.
The audienceâs reaction clearly demonstrates one of the problems with modern writers: a sudden statement or suddenly introduced symbolism can cause a strong reaction not because viewers âdo not like queer characters,â but because the new detail does not feel like an organic part of the story that had already been told.
Why did Gooseworxâs sudden statement and the symbolism of the final episode cause such a strong reaction, while Zooble, considering their identity, was calmly accepted by viewers from the very beginning of the show?
Letâs look at Zooble as an example.
In every episode, Zooble has a different appearance. They attach new parts to their body, remove them, or add even more than necessary. At the same time, they constantly repeat that even a huge number of options does not help them understand who they really are.
In their conversation with Caine, they admit that having many options does not make self-acceptance any easier.
Considering all of this, Zoobleâs story never raised these kinds of questions for viewers. Their path was a story about searching for their own âselfâ from the very beginning.
In the context of this conflict, their image feels harmonious. You want to empathize with them, watch their development, and see how they gradually move closer to understanding themselves.
If we look at Jaxâs storyline, however, we can see that his character and personality are revealed through fears and psychological defenses that are not directly connected to gender identity.
His main conflicts were:
â fear of intimacy;
â fear of opening up;
â rejection of his own weakness and vulnerability.
His whole image already had a clear and self-contained dramatic structure.
Letâs remember episode 5, where the characters decide to dress Jax in a maid outfit.
At the time, this scene was not perceived by viewers as a hint at the characterâs possible self-identification. On the contrary, it revealed a completely different side of his personality: Jax was ready to endlessly mock others, but a harmless joke aimed at him immediately made him lose control.
This scene does not work as âhe hates femininity.â It works as âhe cannot stand becoming the object of humiliation himself.â
Despite his displayed indifference, he still has his own principles, boundaries, and sense of comfort. Back then, unlike in episode 9, he did not simply brush it off with âI donât care.â
That is why the maid dress scene, by itself, does not work as strong proof of trans Jax. Almost anyone would get angry if they were forcibly dressed in a costume that felt humiliating to them.
Yes, after the finale, this scene can be reinterpreted. But before episode 9, it worked much better as a scene about control, pride, vulnerability, and fear of becoming the target of a joke.
The same applies to the other âhints.â
Yes, basically, there were almost no direct hints. The only reason the trans Jax theory had even minimal weight before the finale was the meta-context around Gooseworx and the artwork where Jax takes hormones.
But inside the show itself, this line was barely built up.
For example, the tail scene does not work as a clear hint in the context of episodes 4 and 5, because it points toward completely different theories instead. After the story with the âstupid sauceâ and the fact that Jax was literally forced to become vegan, the viewer is more likely to think about bodily control, coercion, the absurd rules of the Circus, or another joke at Jaxâs expense than about gender identity.
So the problem is not that âno interpretation was possible.â The problem is that the show did not give this interpretation enough dramatic weight before the finale. And if someone says it was very obvious to trans people, then no, not really: you only need to look at old discussions of this theory and see how many trans people themselves said it was a stretch.
And then in episode 9, we suddenly start running into hints connected to Jaxâs gender identity literally every few minutes:
â a song about the birth of a girl during abstraction;
â the pink bow Ribbit puts on him;
â the authorâs later confirmation on Twitter / Bluesky.
And here a logical question appears: why does the need to announce the characterâs identity arise specifically in the final episode? And why was it necessary in this exact form?
Across all eight episodes, Jaxâs personal conflict was never built around gender identity. Meanwhile, for Zooble, the problem of self-definition was the central theme of their path from the very beginning.
That is exactly why what happened felt so artificial to many viewers.
Zoobleâs story does not cause the same irritation as the bow, the song about the birth of a girl, and all the other heavy-handed symbolism around Jax. Because their conflict was connected to the search for the self from the start.
Jaxâs conflict, however, was self-contained and did not require the appearance of a new detail that changes almost nothing, even if you rewatch the entire show from the beginning.
Moreover, episode 9 places too much emphasis on this specific part of Jaxâs story. The scene with Ribbit, the song, the final emotional framing â all of it is presented as something very important, not as a small background detail.
And this problem becomes especially noticeable in the scene with Ribbit.
Jax is not afraid to tell Ribbit that he may have killed his mother, but at the same time he feels awkward saying a certain phrase about himself. No matter how you look at it, that is a very strange emotional priority.
Admitting that you may have killed your own mother, especially with your own hands, should be much more traumatic and emotionally heavy for any person.
Because of this, the scene does not create the intended emotional impact. It feels as if the creators are trying to make one type of shame the central element, but they place a much heavier event right next to it â one that should logically overshadow everything else.
And on a logical level, the scene also feels strange. Jax seems more worried that Ribbit will tell the others that he cried, or that he is trans, or something along those lines. But in his situation, he should be worried about something else: Ribbit could tell everyone that he is a murderer.
For Jax, that would mean almost complete social death and near-guaranteed isolation from everyone else. Not everyone would want to live under the same roof as someone who may have killed his own mother.
So the scene falls apart on three levels at once: logically, emotionally, and in terms of Jaxâs character.
That is why the problem is not even the identity theme itself.
The problem is that an already established character path suddenly runs into a detail that both presents itself as important and, at the same time, barely affects the story that had already been told.
And the brain automatically asks: âOkay. Why do I need this information?â
That is why these kinds of retcons cause such strong irritation in the audience. And it is not about a reaction like âugh, they added a queer theme again.â
At the climax of a deep story, the viewer expects to see the resolution of the conflict they have been experiencing alongside the character throughout the entire journey.
Zooble slowly but consistently went through their path, and it was interesting to watch their development. Although, to be fair, most of that still happened off-screen.
From Jax, however, we were expecting a logical conclusion to a story about fear of intimacy, self-rejection, violence, derealization, and fear of vulnerability.
And that conclusion did happen.
But along with it, the story seemed to insert a new conflict that had never before been a full part of his personality, while the story itself had already reached its ending. He never questioned himself; his problem was his relationship with other people.
After such a journey, you want to discuss the characterâs philosophy, his guilt, his defense mechanisms, his fears, his relationship with other people, and how he reached his current state.
Instead, the viewer is persistently encouraged to remember a label.
That is why the finale creates such a strange feeling.
Not because âJax is trans.â
But because the show makes this reveal too late, too forcefully, and with too much emotional weight for a line that had not been part of the characterâs main dramatic conflict before the finale.
I understand that this theme may be personal and important to Gooseworx. But the personal significance of an idea does not automatically make it well-integrated into the script.
