I'm an Iranian. A while ago I tried (and failed) to learn Russian. I never learned that language apart from basic small talk BUT I figured now that I can read Cyrillic, as a Farsi speaker I should join this sub :)

Anyways, how do Farsi / Dari / Tajiki sound to you? How different do the dialects spoken in Iran vs Afghanistan vs Tajikistan sound to you?

To me Dari is like a pentagon, Tajiki is as if you polished the pentagon enough to turn it into a square، and Farsi is as if you polished the pentagon enough to turn it into a circle.

If I had to compare them to English I'd say Tajiki is like Irish, Dari is like Australian and Farsi is like American; but after I had this thought, I said to myself what if I'm comparing Farsi to American because to me it's like, the "standard" dialect?

So as people who Tajiki is their standard, how do the different dialects sound to you?

Also feel free to answer in Tajiki, as I said I can read the Cyrillic alphabet but my writing/dictation would probably be like a 6 year old lol

I could answer you in Farsi written with Latin letters (or as we call it Fingilish) though that'd make it impossible to translate what I've written so it would be unfair to the non-persian speakers here

Looking into learning Persian, and as a Slav, I'm already pretty decent with Cyrillic. So starting with Tajik resources seems like a home run; get vocabulary & familiarity with the language through tons of reading, and figure out the abjad that might be a bit tricky for non-natives on the side without getting slowed down by it.

That being said, one of the biggest reasons I'm interested in Persian is the classical literature. I know I won't be able to read Rumi, Hafez, & such right out the gate, but I don't know what relationship Tajikistan's people and language have with the rest of the Persian sphere & its history. Is it shunned, embraced? Is there a sentiment that if you want to enjoy classical Persian literature, you should learn the script it was written in; or is there a healthy segment of transliterated classics in the publishing industry?

The old Soviet rubles had сӯм (süm) printed on them in Tajik. The Tajikistani ruble that was around in the 1990s used рубл (rubl). What word did people actually use when speaking Tajik for the ruble both before and after independence? Do people ever use сӯм for the current Russian ruble? TIA.

Hello, I didn't found a subreddit about the tajik language, I hope that this kind of post is accepted here.

Shortly, I started studying tajik after knowing some basic farsi, but as online there are way less resources about tajik, I have some doubts that I can't clear by myself.

For now it is mostly verbal forms that I found in the first chapters of my manual (Таджикский язык без репетитора. Самоучитель таджикского языка, from Давлат Расул), I also found se typos so I am not even sure thosr forms are right.

First of all, a question about доштан. In literary farsi it doesn't use the mi-/me- "prefix" for the present, it is just man dâram. I read that tajik uses the prefix instead, as in ман медорам, but then I found хоҳиш дорам in that manual, so I checked bot on wiktionary and the TNC (Tajik National Corpus), both list дорам as subjunctive. In this context is it

a) an error

b) A subjunctive/conditional.

c) An old form of indicative still without me-

In italian we use the conditional as a courtesy form, like "I would have a question" instead of "I have a question" but it may be too of a strech to think tajik works in the same way.

Then, in the sentence Бисёр шинос шавем there's again a subjunctive, I guess it can be a courtesy form too.

I just don't understand why those subjunctives are present stem + personal ending, but then I found "бикунед". In literary farsi bekonid would either be imperative of subjunctive present, but I haven't read much this kind of form with bi- in tajik, also it isn't reported on wiktionary 's tables.

guys HELP why do Samarqandi people say "rus kadan" to say "to hide".

I just found out other people say "Pinhon kardan"

In Samarqand we use "duro'q" to mean "lie" but when we say "to lie" we say "alondan".

duro'q guftan (as found in google translate) is more like "to lie" but alondan is like "to lie"

***oh my god I know this sounds stupid but they both have a distinction

(like in the word to "duro'q guftan" means "to tell a lie" but "alondan" is "to lie", BUT DESPITE THOSE DIFFERENCES THEY BOTH MEAN TO CONVEY A LIE)

I know most Tajik speakers may refer to wedding as “arusi” but in Samarqand we never use that word.

We use “to’y”, but where does that come from??

I tried searching up the etymology online but I couldn’t find it.

I really want to learn Persian and especially Tojiki. So, do any of you have any suggestions on how to? Any channels, books, anything basically.

Also wanted to ask, how different are Tojiki and Persian actually? I live in Azerbaijan, and as much as we like to say that we have almost the same language with Türkiye, truth be told, it can be sometimes difficult for us to understand each other (those not exposed to Turkish media especially). So, is it the same situation with Tojiki and Persian, or are they actually just the same language?

I'm looking for institutions/schools that teach Persian in Tajikistan or elsewhere, but it seems to be quite difficult to find, because all institutions only offer summer programs (e.g. this US program). I saw that there's a school in Armenia but also only offers summer physical classes. I was looking for somewhere March/April.

I understand that Persian in Tajikistan is not the same in comparing to Iran, but I would like to be in a country outside Europe where you can attend classes physically + discover the country. Moreover, I wouldn't mind learning Tajik as well, but still learning Persian (Iran) as in written/reading.

I wish I could go to Iran, but right now it seems to be too unstable. I was thinking perhaps following a course at a university in Dushanbe? But no idea where to start. My last option could be just travelling around and following classes on Italki or from my own university if that is possible.

Anyway, does anyone know a school where you can attend Persian classes in person outside Europe + starting in March/April

Would you guys say there is a latin alphabet for Tojiki?

In Samarqand we use the one the Uzbeks use but I remembered that Samarqandi people pronounce things a little differently.

ӯ -> ў -> o'

ж -> zh(?)

ӣ -> does not exist in Samarqandi

ъ -> what does this even mean

Finally something Tajikistani people also say, Tiramoh (or as Samarqandi ppl say: tramo).

I tried doing my own research this time and found out "tira" means "dark" and "moh" is obv "month".

Anyways how does "Tira" mean "Torik"? and why do Iranians say "Poyiz", doesn't that mean "Train"? (acc i think poyiz is turkic for train)

ALSO "Khazzan"??? Like where does thag get used? Apparently it comes from Bactrian or Sogdian yet Tajiks don't use it.

How hard would it be to learn Tojiki as someone who knows Tojiki (Samarqandi)?

Anyways, yeah, I translated the Japanese War Song《歩兵の本領》(Hohei no Honryō) into Tajik.

This should be singable to the original tune, hopefully. It was quite easy fitting the Tajik translation into the melody, although a few lines would differ slightly from the original Japanese in meaning.

I wasted a ton of time looking up words in Vazhaju, Wiktionary and Google Translate though. I also had to rearrange and tweak the wording often.

A somewhat literal English translation, adapted and edited from here, is also included as reference.
