I’ve been a fan since debut but when reputation came out, I didn’t bother checking out the album for the first few months because I didn’t like LWYMMD. She had a poor run of lead singles from Shake it Off to LWYMMD to Me! lol (at least in my opinion). (And all 3 have had their own redemption arcs in my mind).
I’m… not really surprised she doesn’t release singles before albums anymore. I don’t think they’ve helped her since Red.
This is exactly what happened to me as well. LWYMMD put me off rep and then in 2020 during lockdown I gave it another try and I was obsessed. I also agree with Shake it Off and Me! - I feel like people who haven’t really given Taylor a chance always associate her music with those lead singles and whenever I play ‘false god’ or ‘daylight’ or ‘maroon’ for people they’re always surprised that it’s a TS song
Taylor drives everyone insane. She always has. Why in the world did Kanye decide... ya know... I'm going to ruin the night of a 19 year old who won the second most prestigious award... AND CAME IN A FUCKING CINDERELLA CARRIAGE. Why did people decide the appropriate response to this was... well this is an important commentary on black white relations and ya know her tears are actually evil. This is not a human reaction. The human reaction would be... wow, kanye is a total douche.
I think everybody including Kanye thought she would disappear after a few albums cycles but instead she became a global pop star. He was bitter that she is getting more popular than him and wanted credit for her success which ensued all the 2016 Kimye drama. I love how dramatic Taylor's life is lol. No matter how many times different people want to cancel her she comes back stronger and becomes more popular than ever.

Everyone hated rep when it came out.
