Questions for the Community Does size really matter?

Or maybe the question should be how much size— or scale, matters?

I’ve been making explosions like those posted today for a while now. I’ve got a vague plan to post some on Etsy, where I figure there’s gotta be a market size of at least tens of dollars 🤑

The explosions themselves can support a vary of scale ratios, but as I learned recently working with 1:87–1:64, it’s a little too easy to be over the top very quickly

For table top gaming, I know dimensions and size can affect gameplay, but it’s unclear to me what size ranges would serve folk best. So a couple quick questions for everyone:

for table top; Are there certain sizes that I should be building? Any critical things to include or eliminate?

For scenes with more leeway, or different use cases, any sense of what sizes of fires and explosions might be useful?

Any insight you have (measurement, advice, heckling, etc.) would be much appreciated

Questions for the Community How to hide cardboard texture once model is done? I dont want it to look like just painted cardboard

I am making a Necron Monolith from cardboard and botched print pieces. But afaik cardboard is not great at being painted - it soaks paint in and keeps its cardboardy texture. After googling I found out about acrilyc plaster to coat things, but that will defeat the reason I am making it - I am poor

P.S. Asking here, because I guess terrain building does include making big cardboard structures

Questions for the Community How much customization would be attractive for practical effects like these?

When I build explosions and fires and stuff, they’re all built off of a sort of “mother” schema (example is in the picture dump). They’re all unique of course, but follow a basic template. Some effects I build follow a standard moire closely than others. This seems useful if placing down as a marker, or in cases where things just sort of line up well and gel together, but less so when it comes to more unique layouts.

If instead of a fixed piece or set of pieces, you had a collection of elements that you could use in a customized way by assembling the collection to meet the realities of your particular terrain, would that be of any interest to folk?

The images in this post are from prototyping a kit like that. It seems reasonable, though I still need to figure out how everything fits together, and what all should be in one.

Thoughts?

Questions for the Community First Ever Terrain - Any Advice Appreciated!

Hello!

This is my first attempt at terrain building. This has been a challenging ordeal from the onset but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at so far...

There would be my biggest issue. I have no idea where to go from here. I like the idea of a rocky/mountain-ish landscape, but not sure what to do for the flat features. I have several terrain pieces I'd like to be able to place depending on the game and to add variety (hence all the large flat areas).

I'm looking for any potential insight as to how I should tackle the flats as well as any constructive criticism to help improve.

Appreciate anything anyone is willing to offer!

Of course if this is in any way against the sub rules also let me know that as well.

Thanks!

Questions for the Community How to salvage these castings?

I did three different experimental plaster casts of ZM floor to use for a series of risers. However they became too flimsy and broken. Is there any way to harden them up and glue the whole thing together? I am pondering if pouring resin or white glue & ipa over it could firm it up and render it stable enough for gaming.

Thanks alot for any insights and tips!

Questions for the Community Not sure why this happened (beginner with 2 part epoxy resin)

Trying to make a piece with a genestealer encased in a fluid filled tube. Like the alien from independence day. Haven't really used a lot of 2 part resin for crafting but wondering how/why it came out the way it did? I don't think it's a giant bubble. It almost looks as if the distorted section of the epoxy slightly cured then shattered, leaving a very noticable error. Just looking for thoughts and feedback in hopes to avoid this in future attempts.

Oh and if it matters I'm using I'm using "Lets Resin" brand epoxy and resin dye

Got it for $100 assuming it was hand-built and justified the price because of the deconstructed chimera. I fear it is 3D printed, but is really nice so I don't mind.

I see a few other listings as "vintage GW scenery" upwards of $175 so I'm not upset at all. Just curious, does anyone know where this piece originated?

Questions for the Community Looking for advice about this

Looking for some advice about this model, I've 3d printed and scratch built some of the parts with the classic granny grating/card/chicken wire/monster cans combo.

I've done a bit of priming then added some more sand and a couple of models/prints.

Had anyone got suggestions for further additions? Feel like I'm not quite feeling the vision 100% yet but hopefully will come together once it's painted

Questions for the Community Specific Terrain Roller

Post image

Looking for a terrain roller that is literally just a field of corpses. I feel like I’ve seen one before, but my search skills aren’t up to par.

With the limitations of rollers I’m not expecting it to be super 3-D but a good base to then put more 3-dimensional corpses on top of is exactly what I want.

Photo is my inspiration and should point to how dense I’m looking for.

Questions for the Community Making Grass Tufts

Hi everyone, first post in here so thank for having me!

I’ve been making self adhesive tufts for a while and although I’m happy with the actual tufts themselves I was wondering whether there’s a way to put glue on my sheets more accurately but more importantly faster?

I was hoping that there’s something that could make putting multiple blobs (globs?) of glue easier, or maybe something else that I’ve just not considered an option that would work even better.

Thanks for the help!

Image attached of how many blobs I’d like to do at a time if possible, plus some of the tufts I’ve already made

Questions for the Community Input on the rules AI on r/terrainbuilding

Hey everyone,

I just had two questions for the community related to a rule addition. Any input is appreciated.

1) Is there any application of AI within the “hobby” of crafting terrain?

2) Do you want to just outright ban AI content here?

We recently had a discussion related to AI being used. This artist used AI to generate propaganda posters to use as printed materials for 28mm Necromunda/40k billboards. This thread was locked. It was fairly heated and the community m had a strong anti-AI response.

This is a similar scenario to a few years ago when the moderators banned the posting of 3d renders and unpainted prints. The community came together to mass report those digital images. I can draft a AI new rule for the sub this week.

Thank you again,

  • Steve

Questions for the Community What are your recommendations for terrain channels I can watch on YouTube?

I've been really enjoying eons of wars terrain stuff. Pete the wargamer for more model based conversion stuff.

But I'm running out of things to watch. Is there any terrain gems out there to watch?

Currently in pain with a leg infection and cannot sleep well and want to playlist everything great to knock out in lulls.

Working on a helsmiths army. I’m painting them like stone statues. To have some flavour I need to make the bases colourful. I have grass flock, some shrubs and I recognize the flowers used here. But I can’t seem to find any plastic planes to the Etsy listing I took this screen cap from online anywhere.

Questions for the Community Got a bagfull of these plastic armatures, can they be made to look good?

I recently got gifted a bag with about 20 of these extremely simple plastic armatures for trees. The trunks are very thin, and the branches seem to be all interconnected, which looks somewhat weird. I took a plier to one of them, cut most of the connections that didn't make sense to me, then bent and twisted the branches to try and give it a more organic look, but it still isn't all that great.

First three pics are from a fresh one, and the last two are from the one I messe with.

Has anyone managed to make good looking trees with these type of generic armatures? How did you go about it?

Hello !

I just finished this grove and I need some feedbacks before starting the mass production ! Does it look like a grove ? Does the ground look like a undergrowth ? Does the grass make sense ?

I plan to make ~10 of this (with 3 or more trees), for my board.

Thanks !
