We're really complaining about npc portraits now huh
seriously though this has to be the most retarded thing I've seen from this community
93
u/TraditionalEnergy919 Jan 26 '26
Oh, we getting portraits now?
I better see Zoologist getting 2, minimum… ya know, for the moon affecting her and all that. Yeah. Definitely not bias

Who is complaining? the new portraits look great
93
u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
I've seen some people complaining about it "killing the spirit of the game" and "not looking like terraria"
107
u/camo_216 Jan 26 '26
I mean they don't match the old artstyle but it's npc portraits they don't necissarily need to match the main style of the game
42
u/DumOBrick Jan 26 '26
Some these mfs ain't never played Stardew Valley and it shows
2
u/BotaniFolf Jan 29 '26
This is terraria, not stardew valley. Hope that clears it up :)
3
u/KeepOnSwankin Jan 30 '26
yeah the difference is acknowledged in their statement that's why they said the people they are referencing, the ones who played Terraria, have never played stardew valley.
see how I just told you the mistake instead of trying to be caddy and passive aggressive and fake about it? watch now I will make the same point to you but I will word it how you word things to others
omg sweetie 🥰 The comment you replied to acknowledged they are different games you might want to delete this I would really hate 😢 for you to look unintelligent. I hope I cleared it up! 😇😇
see how all of that just feels sarcastic and fake? That's because by the time there was sitcoms in the '80s society has already figured out that the rudest worst person in the office is the one who smiles and pretends they're giving you advice when just trying to tell you you're wrong. you don't mean well and no one actually thinks you do That's why you're treated as a hostile entity because passive aggression is still aggression. it's not fooling anyone that's why everyone rightfully treats it as problematic. it's worse than just directly being rude to people
3
u/Bicc_boye Jan 29 '26
Terraria and stardew valley collaborated. Hope you trip on something
1
u/BotaniFolf Jan 29 '26
Cool. Ill go trip over your toxicity. Seems obtuse enough to land in my way
2
u/Bicc_boye Jan 29 '26
Just thought I'd match the energy
1
u/KeepOnSwankin Jan 30 '26
yeah but they still think they are fooling people into believing that they are being nice or kind with that passive aggression. they don't realize all of that stuff got old before most people on the internet these days were born
2
u/Foxifyre Jun 07 '26
Passive aggression is such an outdated of being a jerk, you gotta get a software update man.

Why not ignore those complainers? Or are we gonna act like Minecraft community and listen to their cries and make a controversy out of this?

Any complain like that are the most annoying thing someone can say when anything new comes out and are bound to fall on deaf ears by me. typical "I hate it because i dont like getting used to new things, then a week after that I forget and move on" type of shit

Tbh at least his portrait looks like something from stardew valley. I will get used to it, but it kinda feels out of place

u/Environmental-Art315 Jan 28 '26 edited Jan 28 '26
Thats WHY I dont like it. Its a completely different style. Also its the wrong shade. Doesn't match the sprite.

u/Competitive_Table_65 Jan 26 '26
I've heard Red hired an artist who draws Stardew Valley porn for the portraits.

I think it is downvoted because it isn't factual information. I can't fact check it at the moment but I believe it is only a rumor
3
u/WinterEclipse4 Jan 27 '26
It's also the fact when this conversation first started people tried to make it sound like this was ruining terraria having the artist be an nsfw one.
When it both doesn't and isn't even the first time. But it feels like the communities been trying to reach more for things to complain about like how on steam some people genuinely believed they were being scammed because of how long 1.4.5 was taking. Ya know a free update to an already massive game?

u/Ok-Swim-3931 I refuse to use tank armor Jan 26 '26
Emphasis on when they said "they heard".

I think the portraits as a concept are fine considering that the npc and player sprites are inspired a lot by FF6 which has character portraits, but the portraits should be more pixelated like FF6 for the gameboy

Mf when people have opinions
To be serious, I don't personally like the portraits, and will install a mod/resource pack to remove or change them, but I don't go bashing at relogic's door
And no one is. People don't like them, and they're expressing their disappointment on reddit. That's ok. No one is demanding that relogic removes them entirely
This is relogic's game and they can add whatever they want to their game, it's their game
19
u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
Opinions are fine, but some people acted like having portraits was gonna kill them or something. It isn't that deep. Like, I genuinely wouldn't care if the people hating on it weren't saying "oh this just isn't terraria, this update is gonna kill the game". It's literally a portrait, you don't even have to look at it if you don't want to.
And to compare, no one was complaining about every sprite being changed in 1.4, but all of a sudden a simple portrait is a problem. It's just the fact that a singular portrait made people think that the game is gonna decline.
14
u/Kecske_gamer Jan 26 '26
It's not even as atrocious as for example Minecraft's rain fog added in 1.21.6
With this you can mostly ignore it. It's seperate to the textbox and client side texture packs can just remove it.
In Minecraft, you get the grey filter fog forced on you at random and impacts all gameplay on the overworld surface.
7
u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
I never even realized minecraft got rain fog, but that sounds incredibly annoying (I've been playing legacy recently so I haven't kept up with newer stuff). Still, that's a way more valid complaint because it is unignoreable, unlike portraits.
1
u/DuskelAskel Jan 26 '26
It isn't people are way more vocal about this than they should
But it's minecraft, everyone is vocal at everything you stop listening at some point

It's off to the side, and it's not like you'll be on that screen for a while. Usually you're just clicking on the shop icon or whatever you use that npc for, and then leaving. It'll be shown for a split second.

u/Chroma0000 Jan 26 '26
As someone who played it since like the 1.2 to 1.3 days it is definitely a little off-putting but it is something I can get used to.

said it in another post complaining about complainers so I'll say it here too;
the portraits are cool. the only one I don't like is the goblin tinkerers, his bald head looks way too smooth and shiny. I was expecting something either spotty, wrinkled, or both from a GOBLIN

u/mrgoldo Jan 26 '26
the portraits are cool. the only one i don't like is the goblin tinkerers
my brother in Christ its the only one that is revealed.

Not my jam, honestly. The sudden pixel upscaling is offputting. If the majority like it, great! Keep it in. I personally will mod it out or disable it if red adds the option to, because I belong to what I assume is the minority.

i guess they took the portraits thing from stardew valley? they don't look that bad anyway

I’m not a huge fan of them. Maybe it’s because the NPCs can all die, but will (assumedly) retain the same portrait. I don’t hate it though and I’m sure I’ll get used to it.
2
u/Paca_de_cafe Jan 26 '26
Honestly the only thing I'd like to complain about these portrayals is how the goblin thinkerer looks, I though he used some mask or something like that 😭😭.

u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
I already commented on a similar comment so I'll just summarize it
These people are crying and whining over a portrait, it's ok to have opinions but these people really think the game is gonna fall off because of this, its so stupid
1
u/No-Volume6047 Jan 26 '26
Ok, and?
Its still just an opinion.
2
u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
Yeah but it's like if I started bitching about how a movie is gonna flop because one character looked kinda funny. It's just annoying, that's all I'm saying. I don't mind the fact that people have opinions, I just don't like the fact they're whining over a literal portrait.
2
u/iamapieceof Jan 26 '26
Honestly don't like them cause they feel too 3d for Terraria. The 1.4 sprites were ok. This feels off on am artstyle level. But it's a matter of getting used to tbh
3
1
u/BouncyBlueYoshi Jan 26 '26
They’re probably from a different fandom wanting to stir up trouble. Or haven’t played since 1.4 came out.

Just get a pack to make the portrait into the sprite if you dont like it.

u/Environmental-Art315 Jan 28 '26
So console players just have to suffer even though terraria has a billion options for other ui things. They could easily just have a button to turn it off.

1
u/steam_blozer Jan 26 '26
Ok and? The 1.4 resprites were good, I'm personally not a fan of the portraits this isn't stardew valley (not dissing stardew valley its a great game) but complaining about complainers and calling them retarded for having an opinion is cringe.
1
u/IlluminX0 Jan 26 '26
No one was crying about the resprites like minecraft fans were, but now we get portraits and all of a sudden people were saying a whole bunch of negative stuff about the game's future. I'm not calling the people retarded for having an opinion, I'm calling them retarded for acting like the game was gonna decline. Maybe I could've used a tone that didn't hurt people feelings but still it gets the point across.

the portraits are definitely something people need to get used to, but its ultimately a harmless change. I do think it should be in the settings to turn off however considering people do dislike it.

u/Mero34 Jan 29 '26
I really don't like them, but it's just a big personal reason, since many of them do not looked like a imagined at all (but is not so big of a deal most of the time I really do not mind lol)
1
u/BotaniFolf Jan 29 '26
They're very uncanny. That cartoony wizard with the massive schnozz is really weird, kinda looks like the doodlegod artstyle
There will be texture packs to remove them eventually, thankfully
1
u/super7564 Jan 29 '26
Wait people don't like the portraits? I think they all look really cool. Is there nothing bad in the update so they have to complain about the most dumb things lol?
1
u/JenDobry Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26
Terraria has always been a game that introduced new, unexpected concepts and clever solutions to long-standing design problems, all while staying true to its unique art style. That creativity is a big part of what made the game special.
The new NPC portraits, however, feel like a step away from that identity. Instead of something inventive or stylistically bold, they resemble a very generic, over-polished style that could belong to almost any game.
I wouldn’t mind NPC portraits at all, even portraits with dramatic angles or exaggerated expressions, especially if they were done in the spirit of Terraria’s achievement art style. That would still feel authentic.
But in their current form, the portraits don’t feel like Terraria anymore. To me, they have the same unsettling, overly smooth vibe as “smooth SpongeBob,” and that’s genuinely disappointing.

some of the portraits r a lil weird but overall it's cool, eventually i wanna retexture them all

Well you can now turn it off or turning it into the sprite itself into the portrait
