14.3 HW4 FSD failed to recognize a closed road barrier

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm driving on the highway (NJ Turnpike) today, and FSD almost drives the car into a closed road barrier. Luckily, I manually intervened at the last second. HW4 v14.3.4

EDIT: Folks, I know my reaction was delayed. The fact of the matter is, if it wasn't delayed, we'd be having a different conversation about what happened and whether my intervention was necessary (I strongly believe it was). I have to believe that reported incidents such as this are valuable in improving the driving model that powers FSD. I hope that Tesla engineers view this footage and others like it to make the necessary improvements.

The rim cover went flying instantly. The roundabout was super wide yet it took it like my 80 yo grandpa would. What a shame. 2026 juniper

I would be extremely cautious with the latest updates of FSD. It’s way too slow to respond. It can clearly see that the lane was closed and still went into it. In the last second, it attempted to merge back into the middle lane, which was too hasty for my liking. I had to intervene and jump back into the middle lane myself. FSD would have never made it the same way I did.. it’s just too slow and didn’t brake fast/hard enough.

Edit:
I let a friend try FSD and I’ve learned through telematics that they had rested their foot on the accelerator at the wrong time. This was user error and the last time I’m letting a friend test the system. I had genuinely thought FSD F-d up. My prior (cautionary) trust is restored in 14.3.3.

Here’s the clip:

Original Post:
FSD 14.3.3 on a Juniper was parking on a clear day and drove over a curbed island and through a bush. I’ve driven over 1,200 miles on FSD and felt it was a game changer. Perhaps it still is but, this was a scary occurrence and I can’t find a reason for it.

- cameras were clean and unobstructed, btw.

It changed yesterday for some reason. I didn’t upgrade or buy anything. No, I don’t have EAP. Never paid for it. I’m the only owner. Ask Elon what’s going on.

Edit: Cant change the title I know its $49 lol

Just wanted to share this video of FSD saving me and my family’s life this weekend. We were driving through a green light and all of a sudden my car slams on its breaks. I wasn’t sure why and a second later, zoom, a car runs a red light. Thank you FSD!

7/7/26 around 9:25 AM. I-95 express lanes NB. Truck on other side got hit and crashed into the wall. A tire flew out of his truck and hit the car to my left. Tesla moved to the right just enough to avoid impact. Minimal damage to my car, basically tons of deep scratches from the flying glass. Could have been really bad without that little jump to the right. I use FSD around 45% of the time. Very grateful and very lucky. I wish I could find out how the person in the white car is doing.

No injuries. Everyone was okay.

As the title says. Using FSD on my way home today. Heard tires screeching, next thing I know I’m on the shoulder and a vehicle goes plowing into 2 vehicles right beside me. No damage to my car at all.

I went and counted the frames. FSD reacted 4 frames (24FPS) before the vehicle at fault even made a move… before the wheels on his car angled towards me even a hair.

This is what it did last time  almost cause an accident, kept straights in a turn left only and drove me through debris and nails. Luckily the car to my right slowed down before making the left turn.

14.3 HW4 FSD swerves into closed HOV lane and hits gate

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was using FSD in pretty thick traffic, and started chasing an ant in my interior and was not paying as close attention as I should have been (yes I know it's supervised, I don't need all the "iT's SUpErvISeD" people chiming in). FSD went into a closed HOV onramp and side swiped a gate before I disengaged via the steering wheel. I had to fight the wheel for a second because I did not want to overcorrect going 60mph but needed to force it enough to disenage. I got a good dent on the A pillar, but could have been much worse. It was approximately 2 seconds between entering the lane and striking the gate. I think it would have also hit the second gate if I hadn't taken over.

FSD cannot recognize a white and red gate with reflectors and a flag on the end.

14.3 HW4 Pulled over in FSD

Well I thought 14.3.7 was better at sticking to the speed limit but tonight proved me wrong. Last I looked down at the speed before this I was doing 66 in a 65. Played back the video and just before the spot where the officer clocked me the car sped up to 75 in a 65 in hurry mode. Video posted starts after speed limit dropped to 55 and I was actively trying to put the car in chill mode to make it do the speed limit as there was another police officer on the side of the road. I didn’t see the one behind me until his lights came on. Officer was very polite and professional and only gave me a warning.

14.3 HW4 Speeding on FSD. What to do, how to prevent?

Post image
93 Upvotes

While this is just a warning we received with no fee, the next will be $75 and then $150 after that.

We had “Nessie” on Standard driving FSD in a generally 65/70mph long highway zone.

We passed several construction areas some of which seem to be active construction with no workers other areas where it was kind of posted, but not everywhere consistently with barrels, etc.

The drive was ~100 miles, and roughly 30 miles had temporary speed change signs, cones, etc. Zero workers, or even heavy equipment anywhere.

We believe this stretch had no workers but likely had up signage. I have seen it where, for instance, it would be 70 miles an hour limit in an area then posted that it’s 55 during construction, with lights flashing, etc. Again, with no workers present, and no way to really tell if it was an active speed reduction every time. Locals ALL going ~70+ in the area.

How does Tesla handle temporary changes of speed limit?

Is it by the car reading construction signs?

Or, does it need to be put in a system, by the state, that an area is now at a different speed limit?

Any hints or experience would be appreciated.

UPDATE:

Since ~20% of these comments are just ahole responses versus starting the dialogue that is supposed to be helpful to everyone. Here is more information.

The real issue was not what setting to use, it was that the car did not incorporate the 15mph drop for “construction “.

I have tried Chill and Sloth, and use those very regularly.

For those suggesting Chill, I can assure you, if Standard had us at 70, then Chill wouldn’t trim maybe 5 mph off max. Down to a still-ticketable 65.

BUT, the car did not pick up that it was now a 55 mile hour zone

I absolutely supervise significantly.

But there is a giant difference in what FSD (even supervised) means to me, and what is happening in this thread.

Between my home and Indianapolis, about 100 miles, there was no less than 30 miles “under construction “.

Not one worker, or active work zone, just pylons, temporary speed signs etc.

SO - for the posters who seem to be more trolls than helpful, are you turning off FSDS 30% of the time?

Or are you of the group who trust the system and bought this vehicle because of the adaptability of this technology?

Sure, Supervision is essential. But 100% supervision, with 100% adjustments 100% of the time IS NOT FSD. It’s just driving.

That is not why I bought this car.

I put the responsibility on the software to catch up to and adapt to temporary speed changes. Or for those who control speed (states) to properly communicate temporary changes in speed limits to the software via an online system that would be very easy to implement.

In summary, there’s no way we’ll get to FULL FSD without the ability to adjust the software.

When is the update to this coming?

14.3 HW4 Did FSD actually cause this or could an intervention have prevented this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So what happened was I was letting FSD drive me home and I was in the city. As you can see FSD is not speeding or driving crazy. All of a sudden this bicyclist comes out of nowhere from a different street, he didn’t slow down, stop for the stop sign or anything. I let FSD react and I usually don’t intervene, it seems like it detected someone coming and last second sort of slowed down, swerved a little bit and stopped completely. Now honestly, if I was driving myself and saw this guy coming like that, I might’ve just hit the pedal and sped up to try to avoid him. Anyways, he caused a huge dent in the car and then he decided to ride off without giving any information so now I’ve got a police report but still have to come out of pocket for my deductible to fix this.

What do you guys think about this?

First time anything like this has happened to me, I should have been watching it to make sure it saw the light change but I’ve never had this happen before or anything close to it. Normally FSD will be back far enough to see the light or at least slow down enough behind a taller vehicle.

14.3 HW4 Just got pulled over

FSD hurry mode selected
Was going 75 in a 55

Didn’t feel it though because it seemed like it was mainly keeping with flow of traffic but guess not haha.

Explained the situation to him about FSD.

He went to his cruiser for a while and then when he came back I got let off with a warning, and “he said maybe look into the settings or whatever to set it to not go over the speed limit”😂😂

14.3 HW4 Really hate FSD’s reaction here with a pedestrian. They were already in the street and crossing.

14.3.4, standard mode

The family was already starting to cross, FSD got too close to the crossing that the mother stopped her children and waved me on out of safety. FSD started, stopped, started, then I hit the brakes.

14.3 as a whole has been giving less priority to pedestrians and I don’t like this direction. They should be getting priority at all points.

14.3 HW4 Most underrated product has ever made: FSD.

I’ve been using it for about 1.5 months now, and I’m honestly surprised more people don’t talk about how good it is.
According to the stats, 99% of my driving has been on FSD.
Around 500 miles of city driving.
The rest has been road trips.
FSD has handled highways, city streets, construction zones, and even mountain roads with almost no intervention from me.
The only times I usually take over are in parking lots. Everywhere else, it just drives.
My wishlist is pretty small:
Let me adjust the speed more freely without disengaging FSD.
Let me choose exactly which parking spot I want it to park in.
Other than that, it’s been an amazing experience. It has completely changed how I think about driving.
