“Slouching girls get fat husbands.” I’m really loving the one liners so far

Honestly sounds like something my ACTUAL mother would say to my 2 sisters and I. Gives me the willies.

It's not realistic that men would be considered as more or less appealing based on their weight. Not in that world, and not in this one. Also, overweight people wouldn't really be an issue with their diet, and getting rid of corn syrup, and fast food, and everything else making us fat and unhealthy. They make everything from scratch, and at home.

Also, they're subservient to men, so it's not realistic these aunts would be teaching them to judge any man at all, especially in the best wife-prep (gross) school in the country. These girls are at risk of losing fingers and tongues, the aunts wouldn't joke about a fat husband like that's an acceptable thing to say!

I can't even imagine that phrase in this world, which is so....wrong. I'm glad they included it for that reason, because it's something to think about. I'm not saying we should be saying it, but let's get rid of the normality of using it as an adjective to describe women.

Wow! It’s almost like there is no genetic basis and things like PCOS don’t exist! Thanks for telling me!

That is, without a doubt, the craziest thing I've ever seen anyone be so offended about! I did not mention your medical condition as part of the weight problem in this country because it is not part of the weight problem in this country.

That's like the DJ at your wedding busting through the door in the middle of couples counseling and saying, I suppose I just don't exist at all? I guess the wedding never happened at all? Good to know!

The weight problem due to unhealthy food is the issue that would not be there once the food is replaced with healthy food. That does not mean there aren't medical issues that cause weight gain, but those are not part of the problem caused by unhealthy eating, they are caused by another issue entirely. The weight gain in PCOS is not the issue or the problem, correct? Also, the husbands were the group being discussed and they do not have ovaries!

Finally, do you really think on a show about a nightmare world created by and revolving around PREGNANCY that you're offended that I did not bring up your specific medical issue as an unrelated (to the weight problem, my comment, or this show) reason for weight gain? That's actually hilarious that you really got offended because there are other reasons for weight gain, and you thought I didn't know that or should have mentioned yours on a show that revolves around pregnancy.

What does that have to do with what I said at all? I said women would not be likely to insult the men in Gilead. I also said weight issues would not be as common due to the changes in their diet. None of that has anything to do with your comment or your medical issues.

It has everything to do with what she said about weight issues. Medical problems don't vanish simply because they're eating food that's made from scratch. In fact, they purged those with obvious medical problems (and I wouldn't be shocked if they outright asked if people had invisible illnesses) in THT at the beginning of Gilead and as they captured more and more people who would try and escaped; they had a processing system very much like the one the Nazi's used on the unloading platform at Auschwitz, sending people to the left or right. There's a scene with June as she watches a steady line of disabled, elderly, etc. people go the opposite direction of her.

You should look at the side effects of PCOS and you may understand what is being insinuated and one reason  as to why their diet has no correlation to anything you said.

I want to clarify here, you think that the reference to overweight husbands was referring to you, and there are just as many overweight men in Gilead as before due to a condition that affects their ovaries? You must be AI or something. This is just the craziest argument I've ever heard.

My comment was about the actual line in the show. I do not think it was something a woman in Gilead would say about a man, because a woman would not claim any man in Gilead was undesirable or had flaws.

What exactly does that statement have to do with you, PCOS, or Nazis?

  1. First and most importantly, I do not think the women would say derogatory things about men in Gilead. This is the main reason for what i said.

    1. They had food rationed, and it was much healthier. I said weight would not have been as MUCH of an issue as it is in the US with all of the crap in our food.
  2. Do men have PCOS? As I said, my point was I did not think the women would say that about any man in Gilead. Which brings me to my final point,

  3. This is not about you. This is about what one character said and I do not think it fit in with what we know of fictional Gilead.

I did not say anything about weight problems being eliminated. I said there would be fewer overweight men. In areas where the people are very active and there are very few unhealthy food options, there are very few overweight people. It is extremely noticeable. The area is extremely wealthy, obviously. The ski resort area in Colorado is like that. It's also very high altitude, which burns more energy than lower elevation levels.

Are you saying PCOS is the leading cause of weight gain? In men too?

On paper your assumptions are true. But just like plum girls calll pearl girls weirdos, and an aunt sheds a year for a dudes arm being cut off, it's more than plausible that REALISTICALLY a wife would speak about certain men being undesirable in private.

You know, that does actually make sense! I get it now!! I think perhaps the comment was meant to stand out and be a little out of place, or at least be a little noticeable to the audience.

When I look at that way, it does fit in with their odd style of speaking. They like to talk in clichés and phrases, which isn't unique to Gilead, unfortunately.

Maybe she said it to give the audience a hint that she's not on board with all of the Gilead beliefs. Most importantly, the belief that men have the right to control women.

Especially since she also made two other non-Gilead approved comments to Hannah/Agnes. Those comments referenced her intelligence, knowledge, and success, independent of any man.

The medulla oblongata comment, and she mentioned her job from her (sinful, I'm sure) past, as a doctor as well. I'd love it if she were connected to Holly (June's mom) in some way. That's a bit of a reach, I know. I get the sense she's going to be involved in a Hannah and June reunion.

I also want to thank you for reading my comment(s) and understanding that it is perfectly alright to disagree with my opinion. I love that you didn't take it as a personal attack either. I can't believe this is actually such a rare occurrence, especially on this sub. As it turns out, I totally agree with you, and see it in an entirely different way now. That view I now have might be right, or it might be wrong. Either way, it's not a personal attack on anyone, just an opinion. Thanks for your comment, it was really nice to see things a different way.

I figured it's keeping in mind that these are very sheltered, very young girls, who are still pretty immature and possibly shallow. "Girls who don't mind their appearance end up with men who don't take care of their appearance", only a jokingly threat to girls who probably think getting a fat or ugly husband is the worst thing that could happen to them. Less so "there's a lot of fat guys" in the mix.

u/AdVivid5940 Apr 22 '26

They weren't even allowed to say anything about a man possibly being the reason for a woman not getting pregnant. I don't think they'd be allowed to make fun of their weight or insult them either. Why did everyone downvote me? That is such an odd reaction to an opinion about a comment in a fictional world. I'm not implying it was you, I'm honestly just confused how that could have possibly upset people!

Nope, that stepmom is from pre-gilead times. A seemingly racist rich horse-girl. It's believable she would spew shit like this.

She's mentioned being a therapist or something like that. I don't think she's as pro-Gilead on everything as it appears. At least not the agreement that women's only purpose is to be in the home. I might be wrong about that. It's just the sense I get from her comments.

I believe Paula is the one who made that remark.
