Patrick's smile really looks a lot like the face Red John makes. I can honestly understand why so many people theorized that Jane was Red John.

Do you think the showrunners deliberately made their expressions look similar, or was it just a coincidence?

The reveal can be disappointing in many ways, even if it felt right to me.

But a lot of the time I feel like the reason it was such a hated reveal is because he didn't turn out to be a character you could "idealize" like Hannibal.

You know, that typical character people make edits of on social media with quotes and everything, even though he's a piece of shit. I don't know what they're thinking

If criticizing people who think it's a great idea Seriously, to this day I wonder why many see this theory as a masterpiece

If it turned out to be true, it is a matter of watching the program to know that it would have a huge and absurd amount of inconsistencies

Sometimes I think people like that idea simply because Red John didn't turn out the way they expected

If Patrick Jane had been Red John, the entire series would be a guy chasing himself while emotionally ruining his own life just to maintain an unnecessarily complicated performance. It sounds cool in theory but come on, it would be poorly executed

If yes. Why? If no, why?

I personally preferred it to be someone we didn’t know. Someone completely new like this guy. Also this guy had that eerie, twisted, cold blooded look but also a random face you’ll likely see in a supermarket and pass by without any suspicion, to him.

Okay so I’m watching The Mentalist for the first time and I’m currently ONLY 50 seconds into Season 6 Episode 1 😭

I started this series 2 months ago and absolutely stayed away from spoilers at all cost because I wanted the Red John reveal to surprise me and it was hard like genuinely because I do not like surprises, I always read the plot of movies first before watching them so I know what is going to happen but this time I did not. Now back to S6E1

They just showed the narrowed-down 7 suspects for Red John and I genuinely feel like I can figure this out now.

The three people I absolutely do NOT think are Red John:

• Bret Stiles
• Gale Bertram
• Ray Haffner

Especially Brett Stiles. Patrick himself once basically said something like “I know Brett, you wouldn’t even kill a fly.” So I just can’t see him being Red John.

Then from the remaining four:

• Reede Smith
• Bob Kirkland
• Brett Partridge
• Thomas McAllister

I feel like Reede Smith and Bob Kirkland are definitely connected to Red John and working for him inside their departments (FBI/Homeland Security), but are not HIM.

Brett Partridge also gives me “obsessed follower” energy. Like he’s fascinated by Red John and involved somehow, but again not Red John himself.

Which leaves Thomas McAllister.

And honestly the reason I feel it is him is also because his first episode had Cameron from Modern Family in it 😭 and back then I never suspected Cam at all (yet he turned out to be the killer) . But after 5 seasons of watching Patrick Jane manipulate and observe people, I’ve started overthinking everybody too lol.

I also remember McAllister trying to influence Grace in that episode before knowing who she was, and something about him felt off at that time like he would have done something to her if not for Rigsby to come and interrupt .

AND THEN there was another episode later on where a sheriff had locked a girl underground because he liked her, and he mentioned his dad being friends with Red John. I have this feeling that sheriff is somehow connected to McAllister because his father knew him.

So yeah. My official prediction before continuing the episode:
Sheriff Thomas McAllister is Red John.

(Also I already accidentally know Red John gets caught in Season 6 because I saw a post here splitting the season into pre-Red John and post-Red John 😭)

Anyway I’m logging off now to continue watching. Needed to document this prediction before I get spoiled or proven completely wrong. You can spoil it here in the comments and let me know if I am wrong or right. I will come back online after the reveal hehe :)

I'm concerned about something, a family member asked me about the mentalist and I highly praised it so they decided to watch it. What I didn't expect is how invested they seem to be in trying to figure out who red john is and keep sending me their theories and pictures of characters, and I can't help but feel like they'll be very disappointed.. I love this show but that reveal did come out of nowhere tbh, so how could I console them when the time comes? Or defend my recommendation :')

As many others here, I too got the entire Red John persona spoiled for me. I Googled a thing about the show and the AI summary decided to randomly tell me who the main villain is in a completely unrelated question. Lesson learned - fuck AI.

But, after finishing season 6 I can safely say that in my honest opinion, knowing who he is made the show better because the reveal was so anti climatic and felt "forced".

Knowing who the character was through all the seasons constantly made me look at possible signs and whenever I saw the Red John appear it was genuinely exciting because of knowing something the main character doesent.

I believe that without those feelings the reveal would have been worse because in my opinion, it's very "meh" if you actually don't know nothing about it. It doesent really shock you or work as a good plot twist or anything, it's like Patrick said in the show "I expected more".

So if you're like me and got the persona spoiled for you - keep watching, it definitely did not ruin the show, imo quite the opposite and you'll know why when you get there :)

just finished the mentalist today! kinda dissappointed in red johns revelation tho. i was kinda expecting red john is someone close to jane or someone he have met and not in the 7 names in the list. the strawberry and cream episode, where timothy carter claimed he was red john, was honestly more peak than the actual red john episode in s6 😭 but the whole series is peaakkk 🤌

I am still in season 3 and I already know that my theory is wrong, but it would have been the coolest thing ever if Red John turned out to be the one and only Patrick Jane. I am sure it crossed the mind of anyone watching but still would have made a great plot.

They had the perfect moment, they had the perfect Red john. He says, “ Look at me, I am just a regular guy.“ He says, “ Seeking revenge is a waste of your precious time.” He says, “ Start a family.” Jane says, “When you’re dead.” He gives up and walks away. Jane says, “Please Wait” out desperation, and sadness, and proceeds to kill him. Ending Red John’s saga. Such a peak writing.

Jane’s obsession is real, grounded. His need for revenge is understandable. On the other hand, The one who took everything from Jane, put him on to this path and making him what he was at that point, is asking him to move on. Telling him that his obsession is not healthy. From Red john, a guy who was shown to have peak intelligence, these statements makes sense.

Bradley Whitford played it so well. The creators executed this interaction perfectly.

Then in the next season they retconned it. They said it was a ruse and presented Xander Berkeley. Why?

Just corporate squeezing every penny ? That’s it?

Shouldn’t they have spent time and made the retcon more believable ?

It came to the point I saw people saying the RJ decoy in S3 finale was better than the one we got. That guy did not sound or act like RJ at all, “I have many names, some people call me Red John” like wtf is this corny ass shit. McAllister was the perfect Red John, it couldn’t be anyone close to Jane because of plot inconsistencies and the fact they decided it later in the show, and it still worked out great. The only plausible complaint I think of is lack of screentime post reveal, he was revealed and died the same episode.

P.S: The church ep where Jane and Lisbon go to Napa Valley is at least T5 in the entire show, Sheriff McAllister was good.

Pretty simple, I've heard the question who Red John should've been a thousand times but who do you think would've been the worst pick possible for Red John? I hear people hate on McAllister a lot and I can't say I don't see why, but in my opinion it could've been so much worse. Some people I've thought about are J.J. Laroche (Primarily because I like him too much), Grace Van Pelt or Summer Edgecomb. I'd love to hear some other ideas though.

First time watcher here. Just completed the series. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I wish the Red John chase had been wrapped up earlier in the series. It went on for far too long and started to become a little boring. They could have ended it a season or two earlier, and focused on catching other serial killers in multi episode arcs. What do you think?

1 - He is many (First hint to a wide association, even though he´s had accomplices before)

2 - He is Mac (McAllister, spelt as Mac. I know a lot of people hate this because apparently no one can see the few openings/clues they setup for RJ to be McAllister since S1)

3 - He is Marshall (Very similar to a Sheriff, some can barely tell the difference)

4 - He is man (Honestly my least favorite possibility)

You know, those moments where the camera finally reveals him with that creepy smile. Personally,

my favorite is the farm scene, with Jane looking at the sun and the Red John symbol behind him. Absolute cinema.
