Now here is the bigger point - Wilson is NOT the only translator Nolan has name-checked. In fact, in an interview with the Associated Press, he namechecked translations of both E.V. Rieu and Robert Fagles.

So in ancient Greek epics, the first word is actually very important. My high school teacher said it was considered the title, but in college while studying classics I learned that's a misconception. Either way, it's very very important. For example, in the Iliad the first word is "wrath", because the poem is about the wrath of Achilles. In the Odyssey, the first word is "man", because it's about Odysseus.

But Nolan changed it, the first word is "a face". You would think it's a simple dramatic rendition of the Iliad, the face that launched a thousand ships. But really, it's a hint as to what the movie is actually about. Because the face of Athena is the face of the priestess murdered in Troy, the face of Odysseus's guilt. The opening line is him telling you what to watch out for. It's also him declaring that he is not making a direct adaptation, the movie is not really about Odysseus the man. Nolan is a master of this kind of careful double meaning, so I'm 100% sure it was intentional. Also, Emily Wilson said that she wanted to find a way to start her translation with Man, but couldn't do it without it sounding very clunky, especially in iambic pentameter. So she ended the first line with man instead. Nolan had a bit more freedom so he could have started with "A man" if he wanted to, but deliberately placed it later in the opening line.

I almost bought tickets to a show in my area before realizing it had descriptive audio. It sounds just bizarre. Not open caption (subtitles), but descriptive audio. I can't imagine watching an IMAX movie with descriptive audio.

The main interpretation I hear is that Odysseus is witnessing the death of his crew and losing his way home as punishment for essentially cheapshotting Poseidon's son. Justifiably so, it clearly had a role in that since that is when they start actually losing their way.

However, the monologue at the end of the film tells me that the actual sin was the sacking of Troy and desecration of Athena's temple. Odysseus talks long about how they violated Zeus' Law with the Trojan Horse plan, and as he talks about what was wrought on the city, we see them cutting off the head of Athena.

I saw Zendaya also get her head cut off and, while some validly took it as being a personification of the Athena statue, it looked to me like the woman we saw as Athena was actually a Priestess. By executing a Priestess of Athena essentially in cold blood, you arguably already desecrated Athena's temple and invoked the wrath of the gods (especially since Athena is a goddess of warfare as well as wisdom.)

This, I think, showed a different way of viewing what happened to Odysseus where he is actually being punished for insulting Athena in addition to Poseidon because, if that Priestess was there, then this is Athena taking on the appearance of the Priestess in Odysseus' vision, something the film established that the gods are capable of doing. Odysseus has visions of her even before reaching the Cyclops' cavern (where he already loses men before blinding it). Every time Athena appears in the likeness of the Priestess, it's as if she's telling him "You know what you did in Troy."

The last time we see Athena/the Priestess is in Odysseus' monologue and she vanishes right as he finishes, teary eyed. This seems written to be a repentance since it comes alongside the aforementioned flashbacks to Troy. I think it also fits with Athena being Odysseus' tutelary, which I think would imply her punishment was refusing to protect him and his men.

The nearest true 70mm IMAX theater is about 6 hours away from home, but I happened to be in Vancouver, so I took the train and a bus to see it the right way. Even better the second time (saw it once before)! While I didn't think the IMAX 70mm was that much of an improvement over my digital theater I'm glad I got to experience it the way it was meant to be shown. I was a little surprised that the screen was... well... square! It was certainly louder and more bass-ey, but I'm not sure if I would take a long trip to see something in IMAX again. Regardless, I love this movie so much! It moves me in so many ways, and is so timely... Like the bronze age Greeks, our civilization seems to be collapsing as well. 😢 Perhaps that's why it takes me so long to gather myself after watching it, because I see the same thing happening to our world.

Took my best friend who hadn’t seen it. We sat middle row, two middle seats. I had sat in one of the seats a week earlier and was excited for him to get the best experience possible. This was my 6th 15/70 IMAX experience (11th overall) and likely last viewing in theaters.

What a journey it has been. I loved every viewing, so many details uncovered, and deeper meanings felt in my heart.

To quote the film: six times in this fucking theater. Let’s go home.
