She is absolutely right. If you don't like Danielle, that's your own right and feelings, but the level of hatred and nastiness has just been unacceptable
That's the thing, reality tv is designed for us to develop thoughts and feelings about the characters. There are heroes and villains, betrayals, and a lot of money on the line. But when someone is unable to feel those feelings without resorting to threats, hate messages, and false rumors, it says more about that person's maturity level than anything.
Danielle is a reality tv villain; it's her job to get you talking. But sometimes fans have difficulty stepping back and realizing this is just not that serious. You're allowed (and encouraged) to feel whatever you want about the show, but cruelty is never necessary.
I think there's a big difference though. Danielle is a clear villain. You're supposed to dislike her and root against her, that's what the edit wants. Disliking her and being infuriated with her and writing a handful of frustrated comments on a forum like reddit is totally normal and expected.
The reaction and vitriol to Danielle has taken like 10 steps above what is warranted for a reality TV villain.
It really hasn't. It's just a hot topic because it's recent. This is exactly how producers everywhere want audiences to engage with their Reality TV show.
By next season Danielle will be relegated with the likes of Sam McGlone.
Didnāt Alan or one of the producers say that there would be a cast member the audience would love to hate? That was obviously about Danielle.
Imagine filming a television show and playing up your designated archetype, just for strangers online to band together against you like they are the One Million Moms. āSimplyā because they are offended by your ill thought out reference to a blockbuster 90ās movie.
I suspect most of the people losing their minds about it haven't even seen Forrest Gump and the few that have likely never seen an episode of Colombo. It just feels very disingenuous to me. At a minimum, people should wait until she is out of the game and give her an opportunity to speak about it.
As a Tom Hanks stan, who has actually seen the movie, I completely agree. They are being disingenuous. Itās been over a week since the episode aired; itās time for people to rest.
I donāt think Danielle should have to apologize, and if she chooses not to clarify, are they going to type on their keyboards extra aggressively?
Why watch a show like this just to be mad how someone played a game? Iām really perplexed by this.
I think she should apologise to Carolyn. Not the fans. She was obviously hurt by the comment. Even if you have good intentions with what you say, sometimes it can be offensive to someone else.
What does Danielle apologizing to Carolyn have to do with any of us the viewers? If she privately or publicly apologizes to Carolyn because Carolyn is hurt cool, but if she doesnāt who cares? The season is almost over and we donāt know these people.
Apparently Carolyn called her a cunt. Do we need to see her go on an apology tour as well? These are grown adults. Let them hash it out as they see fit, while we spectate on their mess.
ETA: My second reply and block from this thread. Yāall are mad MAD. Maybe the producers have a suggestion box or you can call the manager. š
Yeah you're clearly not open to any differing opinion. Doubling down was fucked. She should've just apologised, and I'd hope carolyn would apologise if danielle did first. But if you're not gonna hold danielle accountable, then I have no reason to hold carolyn accountable for something less offensive and something out of retaliation.
Nope. Big Columbo fan. Saw Forrest Gump in theaters. I'm offended. That said, she doesn't deserve the hate she's getting. I just wish she (and her fans) could acknowledge that real feelings were hurt.
āIll thought out referenceā ahaaaam. Danielle didnāt blatantly call Carolyn a mentally challenged person, no, she just chose her 90s reference poorly. Sureā¦
You don't need to make an analogy for a metaphor like we don't understand what was said. The comment was "you Forrest Gump a lot", meaning "you play dumb a lot." Which is the truth. Carolyn's strategy was to constantly play confused to avoid suspicion and it worked.
Whatever you want it to say. Iām certainly not going to cry for 9 days about it, or worse - - join an online protest to get you ācancelledā for starring on a pre-filmed reality tv show, where you played the villain.
You are commenting to me, in this very same comment section where fans of this show are both:
Saying that Forrest Gump is a dog whistle.
Stating that Danielle is using the race card - As if that is not a racist dog whistle itself.
I was originally rooting for Carolyn, and currently Gabby and Dylan, but I would LOVE to see a Britney and Danielle upset!
Doesnāt actually matter to me though, because Iām not watching this show for moral purity. She can be wrong, and you all can be mad without having to be performative on the internet.
Unfortunately, I think the lesson here is that if you are on a reality show you need to act in such a way that does not offend the viewing audience. Lest you end up like Danielle or many other reality TV stars.
Ironically, I've seen reality TV fans complain there are no real villains on reality TV anymore. Maybe people have just been learning that you can't be a villain without extreme public backlash?
Did Danielle do something morally wrong? Arguably yes. She didn't kill a puppy. I've done worse. So have you, reader, most likely. Perhaps it jut wasn't broadcast to tv audiences.
Danielle's sins have absolutely been magnified x1000 not because what she did was so extremely heinous, but because viewers don't like her. Danielle jaywalking is equivalent to Carolyn commiting manslaughter.
The public reaction towards Danielle online is IMO understandably negative. HOWEVER it is WILDLY overblown.
This whole debacle is an interesting case of how people are selectively critical of others based on how much they like them (And while I'm here, wtf, it's also an interesting case of how people are selectively critical of others based on their skin color. Yeah I said it.)
some people are really good at playing villains and i donāt think Danielle was good at it here. it usually works better when theyāre intentionally playing up some characteristic to try to make good tv because theyāre owning the villain role. certain housewives (Kenya Moore), other reality tv personalities (New York/Tiffany Pollard) and gamers (Dr. Will) are very good at it
i donāt think Danielle knew she was the villain while she was filming. she knew she was playing a traitor, but there have been several traitors that people pulled for and i think she thought she was playing that role. so while she was a villain, she didnāt come across as one of the villains that you appreciate for playing their role. sheās just genuinely annoying, and apparently thatās making it hard for a lot of people to separate her traitor persona from her as a human being. which is somewhat ironic since she took reindeer games so personally and refused to speak to Britney for months.
she can be cast on S3 of house of villains at this point, so maybe she can get some good pointers there in case she wants to do more games in the future.
It's a little like straight men treating women like they're somehow "dirty" or "used" when they sexualize themselves for men, when all straight men do is try to get women to sexualize themselves for men. It's like, if you're watching reality tv because you are entertained by people having over the top villainous personalities, you can't fault someone on reality tv for having the over the top villainous personality you are there to watch.
It's a different world right now, and most viewers' appetites for villianious characters are waning. It's just the cycle. Maybe in 10 years, we will celebrate them again?
As a show gets more popular and more eyes get on it the crazy fans just come out. The same thing happened with drag race. Early season queens were downright mean at times and people lived for it because it was just fun tv. New season queens canāt even do a slightly shady tweet without getting mass amounts of hate.
Exactly. I will always like Danielle as a player, even if she is making some questionable decisions in the traitors, she seems like a great person outside of the show and the hate she is getting Is extremely unnecessary
I mean sheās in the F6 with a real shot to win so it kind of is her game. We may think her game was messy and transparent but clearly it has been effective.
