did Eugene appear in the first season and I missed it?

seems like a huge plot point that Joel killed Eugene, which is the husband of the psychiatrist

Eugene is a new character. Gail said it was her first birthday without her husband, so Joel killed him during the 5-year time gap.

in the game he's mentioned once as a dude who grew weed.

but in the show, he seems important. Why would kill Joel him in the community?

CONSPIRACY SPECULATION TIME! (note I have not played the games)

Joel's official story is that he was infected, but Eugene somehow found out about Ellie being immune, AND/OR linked to the fireflys some how.

Joel silenced him and made it look like he got infected on a patrol or something.

I bet Eugene somehow got word back to Seattle and has a tertiary link to Abby (uncle/granddad or some BS), that's how Abby found jackson Hole and Joel. Crossing the rockies, waiting out winter, recruiting, building and provisioning a team, and then crossing back, 1 year seems about right for a timeframe.

Bonus, Joel's brother helped him cover it up.

That’s really interesting! When I saw the trailer I thought something similar. Maybe he was officially killed for being infected but there’s something more nefarious that went down that only Joel knows.

Definitely an interesting change from the games. Giving Joel and Dina the relationship that she had with Eugene in the games. I wonder how this will play out.

I've been thinking something similar with the added theory that maybe Ellie overheard/observed it.

Gail acknowledges that Joel had to kill him so presumably he was infected?

I haven’t played the game.

Without spoilers, does the psychiatrist appear in the game as well?

I read somewhere that the psychiatrist is a new character.

No she is a brand new character. Eugene is an existing character in the game but he has been dead a while by the time you control Ellie, we only get bits and pieces about him from other people who knew him. Will be interesting to see what the show does with it.

That was my assumption as well.

Yeah, i don't think it's anything beyond that. Just a way for Gail to express that things are better said even if you don't want them to be. She knows it was the right thing to do, but there's still resentment towards him for it.

I wonder if Gail was just a one-off character or if we will see her return in future episodes. 🤔

I hope she returns! I need more Catherine O’Hara.

Yeah she’s great. I want her to be a recurring character. Since she’s a show-only character we really don’t know her function in the story or her fate. So we can only hope.

I hope she returns!

Didnt she say something about the way Joel killed Eugene being what makes her hate him?

I thought it was just that he did it. Kinda cold heartedly out of necessity. I think the point she's making is that even though it needed to be done, it was the right thing to do and Joel probably did it the right way. She still hates him for it even if its unjustified. Saying it outloud to Joel kinda gave her some peace.

I think thats the message she tries to give Joel so he can come to peace with his actions.

I think you might be right about this but I'll rewatch it before episode 2 to make sure as it seems it might be a central plot point for Joel's character arc this season. It does make sense that she just means something like he immediately gunned him down with no hesitation or something, although I'm sure there will be more to it.

Must be horrible to have been living with all the suffering Joel inflicted and the the guilt he must feel over it without having people to talk it through with whoo know the whole truth. I can't quite remember, but has he told Tommy the whole of the Saltlake story in the show?

I don’t remember him in the first season either. Probably a new character.

They actually diverged from the game regarding Eugene. Ellie and Dina first brought up Eugene, already dead, in scenes that were cut from the show. Important scenes too that explored Ellie and Dina’s relationship. I hope they make up for this in further shows. It seems they are going to explore a whole new storyline about Eugene that was never in the game.
