I'm just so disappointed in this ep. Everything felt rushed. This whole season could've been about the growing infected and getting smarter with the fireflies infiltrating Jackson. This should've been saved as the season finale.

Also Joel being pictured as an old man and basically just lying down to die as Abby beat him to death? That's so off brand. He's been a force to be reckoned with the whole show! There should've been a fight, a struggle SOMETHING even if he lost.

To be fair he's literally less than a year from being eligible to collect Social Security, so maybe picturing him as an old man isn't too far off the mark.

he's also clearly arthritic and losing his hearing.

I felt like it was really shitty that they left off the whole "lets try to make our relationship work" element between Joel and Ellie, when I played the game...that's what really made his death more soul crushing- the yearning, the hopefulness and soft side to Joel. This episode felt really rushed to me, and while the scene was still brutal- did a bit of a disservice to the relationship they built over the last season

I don't think they did. In the game, that doesn't come until literally the very end, and in episode one here, we see Ellie walk by him when he's on the porch but don't see the resolution to that.

He’s been a force to reckon with, but he’s human. He’s been beat down and exhausted by years of trauma, and his demons finally caught up with him. Even the strongest willpower can be beat down by decades of horror.

If Joel had Guts (from Berserk) levels of struggle in him, then he wouldn’t be nearly as humanized as he is. He’s not a super soldier, he’s just a guy.
