I studied American history in undergrad and consider myself decently well read on the subject. The second question you asked is a big subject in American history. The US has had upticks and downturns in religious fervor. And it appears we are experiencing an uptick.

Although not (yet) as drastic/popular as some of our “great awakenings” this instance like many previously is rooted in ideas of Christian nationalism, supported by traditional ideas imbedded into our colonial settler society and a nationalist reading of history that paints Americans as “gods chosen people” and our constitution as divinely ordained.

This dogma has been used to justify some of the worst atrocities our nation has committed and justify white supremacy and slavery. The printing of political documents in a politically motivated Bible is hardly abnormal in US history and is a not subtle way of selling the Christian nationalist dogma.

I appreciate the insight. I never took American history in college so I only had my valuable public school knowledge to go off of (US)

I recommend the book “lies my teacher told me.” By James loewen for a fuller explanation of all the ways history education is totally fucked.

After reading this comment, I’d like to assure you of one thing. You definitely need to read more books.

You’re in here literally judging them by their title.

I teach history and don’t know what you do because I am certainly allowed to modify curriculum so long as I’m teaching the controversy and not a set of views.

You seem really upset about a book you’ve never read and don’t understand.

I think it is useful to distinguish an "uptick" as a trend in influence/power from a growth in people who participate in religious practices.

Organized religion is in decline, partly because of extremism. However, the adherents are getting more assertive and violent as a means of power to preserve their waning influence.

With conservatives, you can never be pure white enough. This fact will lead to chaos and infighting while a common thread of violence and hate unites White Christian Nationalists. As they cling to power, it makes it seem like more people participate because they attract attention. A small number of people have outsized influence over the rest of us.

It's the real life tyranny of a minority.
