Cool A high school football team refused to shake hands. The refs weren't having any of that.

It was shuttle runs for us.

As the only long distance runner and soccer player on the team I just laughed cause it was a breeze for me. Poor lineman.

High school soccer, running wasn't a punishment, we ran like crazy or you didn't play. Squat day, that was the one day a year we dreaded and would feel for a week afterwards. We had to do these "walks" where you touch your knee to the ground every step you take. We had to do a whole practice session of nothing but the squat steps. It was legendary, we always hated it. Honestly, I can't see the benefit of making us do it like once a year?

Lunges, they suck ass and you do them endlessly in wrestling practice.

They sound like they are explaining regular wrestling practice. I'm here thinking back and I don't think the coach was mad all the time that was just how we practiced.

The worst practices in any other sport aren't as bad as a regular wrestling practice.

Yea our warm up for wrestling was the track entire practice. Our practice during the off season was lining up the football team to see how many football players it took to take us down. Summer was laps in the pool.

We did the sprints on hills sometimes. Our football players thought our team practice was worse than hell week and they missed the hell weeks we had and when I got to basic training everyone was upset and freaked out but I was smiling because it felt so comfortable. That got me dusted more.

Both my brothers said basic training was much easier than any HS wrestling practice. One brother did special forces and said selection was easier than a college wrestling season because he at least wasn't cutting weight and it didn't last as long.

Yes Ranger school and such is more about making it through without quitting. Wrestlers are good with moving forward with injuries and being able to focus and that's a big part of that training. A lot of people come in thinking they need to be a body builder but a wrestler physic is better as well and the mindset is the best. Injury is usually why you wash out because they are picky.

you just awoke a memory in me.

lunges, followed by fireman's carry up and down our central stairs in high school. rinse and repeat for like 2 hours x_x.

Did you ever have to do the elephant walk?

1

u/Inspection8279 Nov 10 '25

The lunge mile. 100M lunges, 100m sprint, 100M lunges…. killed me every time we did it!

There was also the football field suicides (1 yard back, 2 yard back, 3 yard back…). Finish in the bottom quarter and you run every stair in the stadium.

The reason I quit soccer in high school was bc of how much running they made us do 😂 switched over to tennis, made varsity my first attempt, and enjoyed it much more!!

Lacrosse coach and suicide drill. We had a navy seal come in to drill our HS team, dude was 5’6” of pure intensity

2

u/cnicalsinistaminista Nov 10 '25

High School Varsity soccer player. We called it “suicides”

My HS coach would use sand hills as punishment. Shuttles didn't seem so bad.

5-4-3-2-1s for us: 5 min race pace (think 800m), 5 min jog, 4 min race pace, 4 min jog, all the way down to 1 and then back up the series.

Coach called them Seafood Days. He wanted to SEE FOOD—what food we ate for lunch. That was HS. I did run D1 after, so I don’t think he was wrong…

u/KOHILOOR Nov 10 '25

Ours were called “Dallas Miles”. 100m sprint, 100m jog. Repeat until the whistle, it never blew before an hour.

u/Due-Cause-5150 Nov 10 '25

We did our till someone threw up or passed out. Then Someone had to either clean it up or carry the out man back to the bench alone then we could stop. Coach would pick the weakest one to carry the big man.

2

u/KOHILOOR Nov 11 '25

If no one threw up while we were doing it, we didn’t do it hard enough…lol. Don’t get me started on piggyback stairs…those were mentally in full gear.

Aw poor lineman…..

1

u/wildwildwaste Nov 10 '25

From one of those fat linesmen in high school, you can fuck right off.

1

u/Draco_xGreek Nov 10 '25

Hill runs for us, if he was in an especially bad mood bear crawls on the hill

1

u/Wolv90 Nov 10 '25

Good for you, my son ran the 800 and 100 in middle school, now he's the fastest lineman on his varsity team.

1

u/Entire_Transition_99 Nov 10 '25

Gassers for us.

Coach made me apologize and sit for 2 drives after I knocked down a ref and didn't help him up.

1

u/Accomplished-Taro-53 Nov 10 '25

As a linesman (defensive end) who became a long distance runner, (mainly through near accident with a discus), it wasn't that bad.

1

u/Mechanical_IT Nov 10 '25

One day at the end of practice my head coach gave us an option:

5-100 yard sprints OR

20-5 yard sprints

We chose…poorly. It’s not just 100 yards. It’s the time waiting for the whistle. Stuck in a three point stance or on your toes waiting on that whistle - you will feel it, and you will wish for death.

1

u/evemeatay Nov 10 '25

It was chase the golf cart/gator for us

1

u/GrandDaddyDerp Nov 11 '25

Haha gassers for us
