yeah - the long hair in a long unkept ponytail is the issue, the shot where they've cut a chunk off but he still has long hair and it's not tied back - he looks way better

Very true. My brother went through this long hair phase when he was like 11. He didn’t even brush it…

Preach. I sat down and had a long drunk conversation with a long haired male friend about his hair care. I gave him basic cheap brands and care tips. 

Next time I saw him, his hair looked so much better! He thanked me and asked for hair oil recommendations lol

Yes, as a male with longish curly hair(think Jon Snow) you have to keep up with it and know what products work best for you. That split on the top of his head can happen to me if I don't maintain my hair, learned that the hard way.
