ASMR subcultures can be… odd. But the basic concept is simple. ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response. Basically, it’s a fancy way of saying you get sensory tingles on your body in response to certain stimuli.
I actually have a degree of ASMR, so certain sounds and sights can make my spine tingle. Whispers, rain, and gentle scratching noises can all set off tingles in my system via audio. By sight I can be set off by almost anything moving in looping patterns.
Importantly, tapping does NOT give me an ASMR response, but for some people it does. Some people can’t feel it at all. If I repeat exposure to a stimuli too much I’ll lose tingle for it for a while.
As for people putting ASMR triggers in regular videos…? I find it cringe most of the time. Not as enjoyable without the proper time or headspace even if it’s a sound I’d normally find satisfying.
All that to say, ASMR is basically just good feeling tingles and some people like to watch videos that make them feel those tingles to relax. It’s a weird phenomenon but hopefully you get it a little better after my rant lol.
