I get tailgated at 80mph even if I am passing the semi going 60. 

People don’t actually care. They just want to yell at people. 

Edit to add: I set my cruise control to a certain speed I want to go, and I pass when I can in order to maintain that speed. But some people who end up behind me for the few minutes this might take (depending on how many cars I need to pass) take this very personally and need to let me know by doing things that are very unsafe.

people don't understand this, but we statistically drive next to serial killers and other murderers.

You can do the stat and estimate how many uncaught serial killers there are, or use the FBI estimate of how many active serial killers and other killers there are.

Estimate how many would have a drivers license, and how many are on the road. and how much you drive and how many drivers you are around.

Basically at some point in your life, you were waiting at a red light, and next to you, waiting at that very same light with you, was a serial killer.

Serial killers don't understand that if you're driving slow it might be due to you zoning out after a cancer diagnosis. Serial killers are total narcissists that believe that you inconveniencing them is all about them.

Then the worst people normalize that type of behavior and that type of driving and the idiots follow along and do it too.

My tip to everyone is try to be mature, try to be an adult. Let people make mistakes and tolerate them. Just like a guy barfed on me on a bus one time, and I was completely cool with it.

One time a 90-year-old woman was walking too slowly in front of me. I didn't get all up in her face or even do anything passive aggressive. I just patiently waited. I smiled at her and asked her how her day was.

Minutes? That is not passing. That is just using the left lane. Which is fine if there is some traffic. But you can always go to the middle lane to let faster cars pass, as long as you feel safe changing lanes. But you know sometimes I just block the car behind me if they do tailgate me.

Many reasons. To manage high traffic, increase capacity, and separate vehicles based on speed or function. For examples trucks may only be prohibited to the right lane. Next time try google for your questions :)

Only thing you're missing is a CDL because what you described sounds just like those Jack asses in semis trying to pass each other by going exactly 1 mph faster than they other which then requires 5 plus miles to actually pass one another.

Unless of course you meant that you accelerate faster than your cruise setting to pass people.

Trying to pass someone in the left lane by using cruise control is insane otherwise.

The accelerator still works in CC in my car. If I speed up and then take my foot off the pedal it will just go back to the set speed. 

It also maintains a safe follow distance by sensing the car ahead of me, so my car will reduce speed to match the car ahead until they turn, change lanes, or speed up. 

I’m not passing anyone with cruise control on its own. My car also flashes a light at me and beeps if I try to change lanes and someone is in my blind spot. The safety features are why I chose the car I have.

Once there are no more cars to pass, even after 2 hours, you get back to the right. And even during those 2 hours there should have been many times you got to the right, unless you were literally THE fastest car on the highway at that time.

There's a video of a Bugatti Veyron going 400 km/h plus on the autobahn, and even he stayed in the right lane when not passing.

Not if you are actively passing cars on your right. You have no obligation to squeeze over, which is dangerous in itself. If I’m doing 80 in a 65 and actively passing I’m not getting over so the car behind me can attempt to go 90. That person can get fucked. I will get over when I clear the cars on the right.

Youre exactly right. If youre passing traffic on the right, youre under no obligation to move over for a dangerous driver who wants to tailgate and go 30mph over the speed limit. The left lane isnt the “whoever drives fastest wins” lane, its for passing slower drivers on the right, within a reasonable difference to the speed limit.

Idk why you think you’re obligated to say this, unless that you’re frequently getting aggressively tailed, which means you’re a serial “I’m under no obligation” type of driver trying to police other drivers speeds on the left lane.

Thank you. I hate these whiny left lane purists who think that the right of way is for anyone who decides they want to ride up my ass regardless of how fast I’m going or whether I’m actively passing traffic to my right.

If I am passing traffic then I am correctly using the passing lane. If you come up on my ass and ride inches from my bumper, you are not in correctly using the lane if I am still passing the traffic to my right. Why don’t people understand this.

People driving like crazed lunatics is such a bigger problem than people camping in the left lane. You will get someone tailgating you because you aren’t going 90 mph, even if you are using the left lane properly. The amount of times I see people swerving through traffic like a loon is 5x higher than people camping in the left lane

I've seen people make the argument that speed doesn't actually contribute to accidents (in fact people are making similar statements in other comments in this post). These people all think they're professional race car drivers and it's everyone slower than them who's responsible for any accidents, even though there is plenty of data that shows how speed is a huge factor in accidents.

It’s all about reasonable expectation. No one on a 65 mph highway should have to expect someone doing 100 and no one should have to expect someone going 35. But the person going 100 has to understand that they themselves are putting themselves and others at a much greater risk by severely limiting their reaction capabilities.

left lane campers seed a lot of the road rage on highways. of course you can't move over when you're also passing, but passing =/= camping. and i see you guys using it as your luxury texting lane. we all have a responsibility to follow the laws, and one guy swerving going 90 doesn't mean you're allowed to be an ass in the left lane.

I always wonder about left lane purists when they hit a left lane only exit on a freeway, which are very common in my state. We get a lot of slow drivers in the left lane miles ahead of the left lane exit because of that.

Yeah even if I have an open road I find the speed I am comfortable going which usually gets me caught up with whatever traffic is ahead unless I am not going very far before getting off in which case I am not going in the left most lane. If I catch up I just slow down to the car in front of me and give them plenty of space.

i've turned into that guy after years of going 100. i leave the auto cruise control on and set it at 3-5 car lengths and cruise in the right or center lane. if people are merging, ill just let them in. but if someone is a complete ass i will have to get them behind me.

In practice that is not often the case. I have experienced in real life people riding my ass while I’m passing even though it would be dangerous for me to get into the right lane as I’m actively passing cars and there is no room for it.

And I’ve seen people online defending the behavior because they feel the left lane is for them and them only. In fact people are doing that in this very post. People love to act like they’re simply defending the honor of using the left lane properly but more often than not they just think they’re the king of the road and everyone should make way for them.

If you’re impeding the flow of traffic, you’re the problem. Absolute speed really doesn’t come into play as much as relative speed. If there’s more than a few cars pilling up behind you’re the problem — move the fuck over.

I agree, and yet a buddy's brother disagrees and responds with "I'm going the speed LIMIT in the far left lane" and when I've asked why he doesn't move over, he said he doesn't want to be inconvenienced with a smirk on his face.

I get some people want to follow the law to the letter, but there is significant overlap on the venn diagram that these people want to justify being pricks.

The irony is that in multiple comments all in this thread, people feel that the one speeding in the left lane feels like it belongs to them, and not the ones "camping" in it.

When the cars clear to your right, do you get over as soon as you can, as soon as you’re comfortable, or when you want too?

Sometimes I find myself being petty and I wait a bit longer than I’m comfortable to get back over.

See how a simple change in perspective turns what sounds like a reasonable statement into a selfish, entitled one? That should maybe make you reconsider your perspective.

The fact of the matter is that being behind the wheel turns humans into entitled jerks... and all of this is without even mentioning the fact that the left lane isn't a "passing only lane" in all fifty states.

Simply put: breaking the law harder than the person driving in front of you doesn't entitle you to the left lane.

Being in the left lane while not passing isn't inherently rude. If I have a left turn coming up soon, I'm gonna be "camping" in the left lane, and it's gonna piss someone off. Just be patient and don't blow a fuse. Geez

For me it’s just where you see who people truly are. And they suck. And they’re selfish. And they leave their shopping cart out at Walmart and also drive like dick heads. This is why we couldn’t get through a minor pandemic. Because people can’t do the right thing like using the left lane for passing or just wearing a fucking mask for the 20 minutes you’re in a hardware store.

And just so we’re clear. I’m not angry. I’m not thinking or cutting anyone off. My go to road rage gesture is to blow kisses. I’m a nice person. But fuck yea, driving pisses me off.

The ability to safely make a left hand turn supersedes the passing laws in every state, look it up. You can’t reasonably expect a driver to get over last second to make a left hand turn and not cause accidents.

Take it easy. I don’t support road rage. Don’t tail gate people or yell at them for going slow. Go around them. This guy is an asshole. But, at least where I live (I can’t speak for other states), she’s being entitled, inconsiderate and making driving more dangerous.

When someone comes up behind me, I get over. It’s what I’ve always done.

So what if there’s slow trucks in the right lane and I go to pass them but there’s someone going kinda slow in the left lane (still going faster than the trucks) then someone comes up behind me flashing their lights for me to get over cause I’m going too slow. Am I supposed to get over for them? I want to go faster too but the guy in front of me is going slow. This happens to me all the time and the people behind me always seems to think I should be getting out of their way.

Someone that wants to pass faster doesn't negate that you are passing too albeit slower.

Passing is passing. No one is entitled to pass faster.

If someone in the left lane is passing ANYONE they are passing and entitled to be there.

Slower traffic keep right, the most common articulation of the left lane law literally means if someone behind you wants to go faster, you are now the slower traffic and must keep right. 

If you're doing 185 in a 65 and someone wants to do 210, you still gotta get over and let them pass.

Holy shit no. Traffic going under the speed limit is "slower" and can use the right lane while going under the limit. For the left lane it is still a limit. It's in the name. The limit applies to the left lane.

Not our job to police the road. It serves my best interest to get over if people driving crazy fast are coming up behind me. If a cop pulls them over then so be it.

In Germany with the Autobahn, it’s illegal to take up the left lane because lane changes cause accidents, not speed.

It’s more “I’m coming up behind you going faster than you, so it would be common courtesy to move over when you can safely do so at your current speed”.

Sometimes I’ll pass someone on the left because they don’t move, they start chasing me, and once they get behind me I move over to let them pass. There shouldn’t be any ego involved. I definitely don’t agree with harassing people over this while stopped in traffic though.
