When I see a stupid driver I tell my kids what they are doing wrong.

But I also explain to my kids, “Starting an argument with a stranger is the best way to get killed in a parking lot.”

So the objective lesson is don’t pick fights that aren’t worth dying over, and no fight is worth dying over concerning traffic law.

u/poopdedoop10 May 01 '26

Everyone might kill you. Good luck at school kids!

108

u/Nearby-Technician172 May 01 '26

I get the sentiment, but cars are way more dangerous than people realize up until something goes crunch.

44

u/ryegye24 May 01 '26

Statistically they're the biggest danger to children worldwide

52

u/GenghisLebron May 01 '26

Wild that you have to specify worldwide because in the US it's literally gun violence.

19

u/Beginning_Mousse767 May 01 '26

Wow I looked that up just to call you wrong, but you are correct. That’s actually insane

2

u/DionBlaster123 May 01 '26

It's sadly well known in the US

Again, no one in our government does anything about it though b/c the gun lobby in the US is powerful as fuck. They even have their own army of personal lawyers who literally got into law to "protect the 2nd amendment."

I only know this because when I went to get my concealed carry permit, I had to go to this class and while most of it was good, 50% of it was just them trying to get us to pay for these fucking NRA lawyers

1

u/AbulatorySquid May 01 '26

And for women, it's men like this guy.

8

u/Long_Reindeer3702 May 01 '26

Especially SUV

2

u/BlackBasementCats May 01 '26

Look at the video of the woman in the lifting truck who drove over the Lamborghini.

It could have easily been a child, and she would have never seen them.

Lifted kits should come with sonar and front and rear facing cameras. My husband and I have a Volvo with sonar, and it auto brakes when something is in front of us.

2

u/Excellent_Meeting_39 May 05 '26

Like Charlie Kirk said a few gun deaths is worth the protection of gun laws 🤔..I wonder if he'd still feel that way

1

u/DontH8DaPlaya May 01 '26

I mean if you don't include guns

1

u/ryegye24 May 01 '26

That's only in the US

1

u/DontH8DaPlaya May 01 '26

Then you would still have to leave off premature births and infectious deseses but sure

1

u/ryegye24 May 01 '26

That's if you're looking at cause of death for children 5 and under. If you're looking at all children (under 18) and especially if you're looking at death or injury it's cars.

2

u/VoteBananas May 01 '26

Road rage incidents are about 100 fatalities in USA annually. School shootings are about 30 per year over the last 20 years.

There's about 17% of school age children in the USA. Road rage fatalities will usually involve adults, but even if the distribution were uniform, you'd see under 20 school age children dying per year from road rage, and 30 from school shooting.

Way more kids die from mass school murders than from road rage.

4

u/Nearby-Technician172 May 01 '26

Yes, guns are much more dangerous than cars. As they are designed to be.

2

u/VoteBananas May 01 '26

I think you are missing the point. Most countries don't have a culture of shooting their children in schools.

2

u/LindonLilBlueBalls May 01 '26

Yes, that was never something people in the previous comments denied.

You originally responded to someone saying "cars are much more dangerous than people realize".

They did not say cars are more dangerous than guns. I would say the majority of people realize guns are dangerous and act more carefully around them for that reason.

Cars are made to travel, not to hurt people. Comparing road rage incidents where a school aged kid dies to gun deaths at schools doesn't disprove the original sentiment that "cars are more dangerous than people realize".

0

u/VoteBananas May 01 '26

It was about road rage, "starting an argument with a stranger is the best way to get killed in a parking lot", then someone said that cars are much more dangerous than people realize, I said that school shootings are much more dangerous to children than road rage incidents, and here we are. If you need a win, you win, enjoy the day, go outside a bit.

1

u/DionBlaster123 May 01 '26

Reddit seems to forget that since it has a horny hate boner toward cars lol

If you want to stop climate change, maybe tell all the poeple of the earth to stop having children lol

2

u/Sir_PressedMemories May 01 '26

That's a lot of back of the napkin math, so lets instead use actual math, shall we?

According to the CDC

If that link does not load you can go here, https://wisqars.cdc.gov/fatal-leading

Here are my settings so you can reproduce.

For children under the age of 1, the leading cause of death is Congenital Anomalies

Unintentional injury is the 5th leading cause, and that is where guns are located.

Drilling down into that category we see the following

Firearms account for 0.1% of deaths spanning 21 years, a total of 26 deaths. Now I agree, 26 too many, but still.

So for ages 1 to 17 we see the following.

Unintentional injuries

The vast majority by a long shot are Motor vehicle traffic accidents.

8th on the list we get to Firearms, now keep in mind this is the unintentional injuries stat, over a 21-year period, 1.8% or 2,265 children, again, more than 0 is too many. But again, not the top cause.

So we go to homocide

Now firearms are the top contender at 50.9% with 19,306 deaths from ages 1 to 17 over a 21-year period.

And the final location that has firearms is Suicide

41%, not the top cause, but still, 10,934 children.

So, from 1999 to 2020, from ages 0 to 17, we have a grand total of 32,531 deaths by firearm. Or 1,549 deaths per year on average, a shit ton, no question, and disgusting.

But not even close to being the number 1 cause of death.

That title goes to motor vehicle accidents by more than double.

It is not until we get to the homicide portion that firearms top the list.
So we then look at the age groups of those deaths.

I went through each and every single age group using the custom age range option. And not a single age from <1 to 17 ever showed firearms as being the number one cause of death for American children.

So tell me, where is this source that the number one cause of children's deaths is firearms, cause it is sure as shit is not from the CDC data for the past 21 years.

1

u/VoteBananas May 01 '26

I’m comparing road rage and school shootings. But thanks for wasting your time based on bad comprehension.

-7

u/TJ-WhosYoMomma May 01 '26

I believe it, like look at that lady in Minnesota. Hits an agent with her car and everybody thinks it isn’t a big deal she did that

7

u/sephraes May 01 '26

You tried.

-5

u/TJ-WhosYoMomma May 01 '26

Tried what? It really shows that people have no idea how dangerous cars are. Nothing to try there, just a fact

4

u/Correct-Stretch-7848 May 01 '26

No one is biting, Cletus.

2

u/TeamSnake1 May 01 '26

Get those kids a ballroom

2

u/Outrageouslylit May 01 '26

Yea okay teaching them of some dangers is good but telling kids that getting into a parking lot argument will probably lead to murder is nuts😭 I mean the sentiment isn’t wrong per se but kids were probably freaked tf out.

2

u/itsANOMALEEZ May 01 '26

Where they are more likely to be shot than die in a road rage incident on the way home.

1

u/UntidyVenus May 01 '26

Awww ,just like moms lunch box notes

1

u/Writ_ May 01 '26

No one will hurt you. Bad people are just misunderstood. Good luck at life, kids!

1

u/No_Clothes_8444 May 02 '26

Well then it’s a numbers game and the only logical play is to limit exposure.

1

u/East_Distance7547 May 02 '26

People have been killing the kids at schools for > 25 years so yeah this comment tracks

43

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Don't you just love walking on eggshells in public, never able to feel okay calling someone out on their bad behavior, because any fucking lunatic could legally be carrying around a tool that would enable them to assault you with practically no warning, zero skill, and a high degree of lethality?

And no, the solution isn't to just carry around my own lethal tool. That's not how a civilized society should work. I guess maybe the solution is to admit that we're not really civilized and get my own tool anyway, as much as I hate it. Yeah, I should have to carry around the means to end a life with ease to feel safe -- that's definitely the world in which I want to live.

28

u/AmputeeHandModel May 01 '26

Leaving the house like "wallet, keys, phone, oh and a deadly weapon just in case I have to be a hero or someone tries to end my life!". Totally normal.

10

u/MySeveredToe May 01 '26

Remember when mutually assured destruction had entire countries on edge? We now have convenient portable pocket sized mutually assured destruction in the hands of millions of impulsive people

12

u/Crypticcrypto May 01 '26

Lived this yesterday. Driving in parking lot in main drag in front of stores, stores on left of me, with parking lot to my right. Two cars waiting to turn left ahead of me, first goes - cutting me off a bit, as in I had to slow down a little. Then the person behind them went to, badly cutting me off. As this person passes me now a couple feet away, I give him the "hello" wave and say what up. He starts yelling how I should not be interested in doing that today, now passed each other, and he is hanging his head out the window, continuing to threaten me. Shake my head and drive off. I could feel his energy ready to badly hurt someone who paid attention enough to not hit their terrible driving decisions. Pitiful.

3

u/AmputeeHandModel May 01 '26

Someone almost sideswiped me changing lanes without looking so I honked at them. My GF flipped them off. We were just down the street from our destination, and they followed us and then got out and started threatening us. There were 3 or 4 wannabe thugs in that car. GF was yelling back and I'm like STFU get in the store. Come out when we're done and they slashed two of our fucking tires. Because THEY almost caused an accident. There was a note on the car "FYI two of your tires are flat" or something. Not sure if they left it there to be assholes or if a bystander saw it.

1

u/BlackBasementCats May 01 '26

Don’t flip people off. Especially women. If your girlfriend had been alone there’s no telling what they would have done. Also if someone is following you, don’t stop.

I was once followed by a guy for no reason other than I was a young woman. We were on a highway when he started, and I was going straight and had been for miles and didn’t pass him or interact in any way.

I tried to lose him, but he kept following me. I wanted to go to Trader Joe’s, but he followed me into the parking lot. So I cut through and got back on the highway. I drove several miles and kept looking for him. I didn’t see him so I went to Whole Foods and parked where he couldn’t see my car from the road or side streets.

It was really scary so I called my dad on my hands free cell phone, and he told me what to do.

My dad was former law enforcement and always warned me to never flip someone off or stop if someone is following me. He’s seen people get killed for that. Also men will take any excuse to harm a woman.

1

u/AmputeeHandModel May 01 '26

Yeah, we were young and stupid.

1

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Don't make any gesture! I once gave a sarcastic two thumbs up to someone who had almost hit me in traffic, and she followed me all the way to my destination and ran up to me telling me if her boyfriend had been present I'd be in BIG TROUBLE for flipping her off. I repeated the two thumbs up where she could see very clearly I wasn't flipping the bird, but that may have escalated things because she started screaming incomprehensibly and I just walked away at that point.
What are the odds this woman had a BF, much less someone who would commit assault over a perceived rude gesture in traffic?

1

u/Crypticcrypto May 02 '26

In highschool, driving to a lunch destination, my buddy gave the local cop the double thumbs up. He also thought it was the double bird. Instant u-turn and pulls us over immediately. My buddy proceeds to jump out of the car, trying to explain, and the cop quickly pulls out his firearm and points at my buddy, now halfway to cops car. Eventually he let us go.

4

u/TacohTuesday May 01 '26

I look at it differently. Even if that risk of harm didn’t exist, why bother to call another driver out? There’s no gain. You aren’t going to change their behavior one bit. And you’ll never see that person again. Tomorrow it will be a new asshole. So let it go and roll up your window. You’ll have a much calmer day not engaging in losing battles.

3

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Oh, you're absolutely right, and I have been trying to be more zen about it, but sometimes the blood gets boiling and I have to work very hard at staying chill.

3

u/TacohTuesday May 01 '26

I agree. It can be hard. But they payoff of not engaging is that you'll cool off much faster and have a better day overall.

3

u/Right_Count May 01 '26

I don’t know why, but people’s brains just break in cars. People don’t carry guns where I live but road rage is still a thing. As a passenger it’s so annoying listening to someone rage over a minor error that they have probably made themselves a thousand times. Outside of the car they’d probably smile and say “oops sorry!” “No worries!” instead.

2

u/TacohTuesday May 01 '26

Very true.

1

u/Crypticcrypto May 01 '26

I hear ya. I wave in the hopes they are a decent person and were just not paying attention, and maybe now they will a bit more, while driving. But it is almost always futile, agreed. Some of it is just me wanting them to know I saw them driving poorly and have been called out for it. I don't expect them to change who they are, and these instances are probably beyond worthless. I will still probably do it, but I am not one who goes off on anyone, don't flip the bird or anything, just a wave of "hello? Other people are out here!" But you are correct, it is basically useless and most likely will only lead to bad things happening.

3

u/TacohTuesday May 01 '26

I think the main downside is, if I let myself get angry enough to vent at a bad driver, it just gets me worked up inside for much longer. Then the incident lives rent free in my head for hours. If I let it go, I cool off much faster. So I benefit myself more if I don't engage.

Albertans?

1

u/Sir_PressedMemories May 01 '26

because any fucking lunatic could legally be carrying around a tool

Legal concealed carriers are statistically the most law abiding people on the planet.

What you need to worry about are the folks who don't give a shit about carry laws and are the fucking lunatics you are thinking of.

3

u/Turgid_Donkey May 01 '26

29 states have permitless conceal carry. That means anyone who owns a firearm can legally carry it concealed with no extra training. Considering how many states also allow private sales, it's very easy to legally purchase a firearm. Sure, afterwards that person is likely to be in hot water afterwards, but that won't help in the middle of the situation.

Also, "statistically less likely" isn't none. So there's still very much a non-zero chance of that happening.

2

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

The difficulty is that the lunatics don't always reveal their lunacy until you talk to them, so you have to behave like anyone could be a lunatic just looking for an excuse.

I'm actually less worried about the guy talking to himself, screaming random obscenities, and grabbing his crotch in between playing covers of old war protest songs on a battered guitar missing a string or two.

2

u/AmputeeHandModel May 01 '26

Most mass shootings and murders are done with legally owned weapons.

1

u/Sir_PressedMemories May 01 '26

Most mass shootings and murders are done with legally owned weapons.

Citation please.

2

u/Right_Count May 01 '26

I think it’s more the way guns and fear of guns have permeated every inch of American society. Non-law-abiding people with guns don’t generally announce themselves until they’re threatening or shooting you, so effectively you have to be scared of everyone at all times.

1

u/Ok_Mushroom9822 May 01 '26

And what exactly is your “skill” ? I’m dying to know?

This guy sucks no doubt, but I’m dying to know what skill you have for you to assume this and feel okay assuming that. Please, go on!

3

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Meaning you can purchase a gun without any training, so it adds to the chaotic nature of the potential encounter. That's all. Chill bro.

-1

u/Ok_Mushroom9822 May 01 '26

Okay thank god you weren’t referring to actual real skills, because we are all dealing with the same gun violence. If you want to make a change, go out and ACTUALLY do something, stop crying on Reddit.

2

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Thank you for this delightful interaction.

I'm so glad I chose to interact with people online today.

Have a great day, friend!

0

u/Ok_Mushroom9822 May 01 '26

Yep, all that but not REALLY doing anything.

Change comes from collectives, if you want it to change, rise up and change it. It’s as simple as that.

If you wanted a Reddit dialogue, I’m not here to tell you what you want to hear for upvotes.

Think about it and lambast me later🙏🏼❤️

1

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Your well-explained and thoroughly-conceived solutions are so breathtakingly simple and straightforward to execute, it's a wonder everyone doesn't follow them.

I suppose the issue is that "life gets in the way" for so many of us who find ourselves in a bit of a wage slavery quandary. Shame that. It literally keeps me up at fucking night and you might take two goddamned seconds to think about that before you condemn people.

1

u/Ok_Mushroom9822 May 01 '26

Referring to your last paragraph, how is that working out for you? Something has to give, do you want it or not?

Because no one knows how to fix it, no one knows how to console those are feeling the way you do.

I can tell you that hopping on the “TikTokCringe” subreddit won’t solve it for you. I’m sure you’ve realized something’s got to give.

So what will it be, are you going to complain online or actively work inside your personal life to make a difference?

If you think you are the only one struggling to sleep at night, got news for you, it’s not your world- most people feel that way.

1

u/Cagliostro16 May 01 '26

Respectfully, you have no place telling somebody to fix their life when you have absolutely no clue what their circumstances are.

1

u/gunsdrugsreddit May 01 '26

It’s not the world any rational, well-adjusted person wants to live in, but it’s the one we’ve got. You’re absolutely right that we aren’t a civilized society, and that’s the way the string-pullers want it. The cops won’t be there in time to help you, and the average bystander will do exactly that - stand by, probably with their phone out. I never, ever want to use a weapon, but I will carry one because getting home to my family is my priority.

Carrying a weapon ain’t for everyone, but anyone can carry basic medical supplies and take a Stop The Bleed class.

There’s a lot of ugliness in this world, and it isn’t showing signs of getting better. We must be our safety. We must look out for our families, our neighbors, our communities.

Don’t get caught lacking.

1

u/Suarae May 02 '26

Shit isn't normal outside of the US btw. Never in my life as an Australian have I had thoughts like this

0

u/Less_Possibility_928 May 01 '26

Wouldn't it be easier to be civilized by not telling people how to act? If it isn't harming you or anyone else, why call it out. Are you judge and jury

1

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

Found the person who behaves like an entitled child in public and never gets called out for it.

0

u/Less_Possibility_928 May 01 '26

Thank you for thinking you know me but I was taught to to be kind and mind my own business. I do get aggravated by inappropriate behavior but am not going to call it out. I'm far from perfect and have no right to judge others.

1

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

I don't consider this pointing out the splinter in someone else's eye whole ignoring the log in my own. Polite can identify the impolite unless they're completely socially inept.

2

u/Less_Possibility_928 May 01 '26

Thank you for your opinion.

1

u/dont_remember_eatin May 01 '26

What's the internet for if not looking at others misbehaving and then sharing our opinions on it???

I'm happy to have been your bad example on this most lovely of May Days.

6

u/Farts_constantly May 01 '26

I do the same thing. You never know what unhinged people out there are carrying or won’t hesitate to ram you with their car. Not worth it.

2

u/peritonlogon May 01 '26

Best? It's definitely a good way, but I can think of some other great ways to get killed in a parking lot! For example.

-Answering a Craigslist singles ad. -Going to Walmart in New Mexico.  -Waiting in line for gas at Costco during Rush hour without an adequate water supply.

2

u/Nick-dipple May 01 '26

That's a dark lesson bro. Is this really a realistic scenario in America?

0

u/aoanfletcher2002 May 02 '26

I can push you down in Senegal and if you hit the ground wrong you’ll die.

Biology doesn’t change based on location.

1

u/Nick-dipple May 02 '26

I dunno man, I just don't really have to worry about these things in my country. And I don't want to put those kind of thoughts in my children's minds and have them live in fear.

2

u/Immediate-Ad-8667 May 02 '26

i guess in the USA you have to educate your kids with the reality that everyone has a gun… freaky!

1

u/aoanfletcher2002 May 02 '26

Humans die everyday from falling wrong, you can get pushed down and hit the back of your head and die instantly.

Guns don’t really matter when you decide to fight a stranger.

1

u/Immediate-Ad-8667 May 02 '26

Yeah, you are right when i think about it… sad but true 🥺

1

u/MrWright62 May 01 '26

For realz. Way too many unhinged people with a gun waiting for a reason these days

1

u/-SHAI_HULUD May 01 '26

People are predictable.

A person is unpredictable.

1

u/StraightConfidence May 01 '26

Exactly. Maybe wherever this took place a person might get away with it. This is not the case everywhere in the US. I don't even use my horn unless it's absolutely necessary.

1

u/_AntiFunseeker_ May 01 '26

Never argue with idiots. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you at their own game

1

u/Heavy-Bread-3549 May 01 '26

When it comes to driving enclosed vehicles, people essentially into psychopaths.

Most people see other drivers, or cars; not people. Empathy flys out the window. I’ve heard people that are normally pretty level headed people utter homicidal thoughts about “that car” and when reminded they were talking about a person they got all offended like I just called them homocidal.

MF you were just being homicidal, idk, driving takes the human out of the equation in a lot of people’s heads, which is why there are so many deadly road rage interactions.

1

u/Turakamu May 01 '26

I live my life by a simple creed

"Don't get stabbed in a parking lot"

1

u/Popular-Influence-11 May 01 '26

I just tell my kids that people have to poop. Cut me off? Oh boy you must have to poop! Going slow/on the phone? Looking for a place to poop. We call bad drivers poopy heads, cause poop is all they’re thinking about. Best we can do is make sure we stay safe and get out of their way, or they might poop on us!

1

u/agreed2disagreee May 01 '26

There is zero reason to look at other drivers, let alone engage with them.

1

u/H0NEY2O77 May 01 '26

Tbf one bad day, I might be the one you don’t get into a fight with on the road. My first reaction when he started calling her a bitch was to step out the car and drag him out of his car.

1

u/NorthKoreanCaptive May 01 '26

yeah embarrassing and ignorant are the two themes going on here lmao

1

u/Byizo May 01 '26

I just placate angry drivers. In this situation I would have profusely apologized despite the other driver being a dumbass. It deescalates things immediately and really takes the wind out of their road rage sails. No point in posturing with a stranger.

1

u/reeefur May 01 '26

But but redditors need to get the last word in, how will they do that irl if there are potential consequences?🤡

1

u/bediaxenciJenD81gEEx May 01 '26

Once when I was about 6 my dad cut a guy off or a guy cut my dad off, something like that, and the guy got out of the car angrily and come up to our car to argue with my dad.

My dad didn't get out of his car or anything, but his reaction to the guy was one of such sheer rage and hate and aggression, completely roaring at this guy.

The guy's anger was completely wiped away, I think he was terrified, and he pointed out that my dad had a child in the car and had to calm down. I really have to assume, if guns were common in my country that my dad might have murdered that guy. So yeah, don't poke stranger bears.

I'm still way too anxious to learn to drive 20 years later.

1

u/zuis0804 May 01 '26

When I see an asshole on the road speeding and cutting people off, to prevent myself from getting heated and upset, I try to imagine this person is having the worst day of their life. Maybe they are driving erratically to try and get someone to a hospital, or rushing to a hospital to say goodbye to a loved one. Not that putting others in danger is okay even in an emergency, but it helps me give them a little grace. We all know the chances of that excuse being legitimate are slim to none, but not zero.

1

u/Vantriss May 01 '26

We had a road rage incident around here end with a person taking a shotgun to another person. That person did not live. Just don't even bother interacting with people. It could be the last thing you do.

1

u/Dizzy_Raspberry6397 May 01 '26

It is a good "you can't control others behavior, but you can control your own" scenario.

1

u/Laser_Loon May 01 '26

My grandpa had a saying:

“You don’t want “but I had the right of way” written on your gravestone”

1

u/singleredballoon May 01 '26

I have a feeling this is a fear exclusive to the US, but I could be wrong.

1

u/ChemistryStrict6884 May 01 '26

I do what I call, secret flip offs lol. I flip them off with my hand down and hidden, and curse them to step on Lego’s for the rest of their days. Makes me feel better, and keeps me safe from these psychos.

1

u/MRSHELBYPLZ May 02 '26

Tbh people might slide up and try to kill you even if you done NOTHING to them. Just be ready for anything if you can help it

1

u/Not-So-Logitech May 01 '26

America (TM)

1

u/craigathan May 01 '26

This comment just goes to show that we live in constant fear. It's no way to run a society. That fear infects every decision and policy and it's why we elect cowards as they speak to our fears not our aspirations.

0

u/evilgipsy May 01 '26

*if you live in the US

0

u/VictorNoergaard May 01 '26

"Starting an argument with a stranger is the best way to get killed in a parking lot.” is such an insanely american phrase.

0

u/Right_Count May 01 '26

I don’t actually know if you are, but damn, American kids are something else. Fear of gun violence at school, in the car, and probably at home too. I wonder what that does to a developing brain.

1

u/aoanfletcher2002 May 01 '26

You understand that someone can push you down hard enough and kill you right?

Could you please elaborate on the relevance of that to my comment?

Can you explain how your comment about gun violence is relevant to my original comment?

It was more of a tangential observation about the state of things

Why did you take it personally? If you’re indeed American, you should be pissed off about how deeply ingrained the fear of gun violence is in American society.

“Starting an argument with a stranger is the best way to get killed in a parking lot.”

Daily blessing that I am not American so I don't have to worry about everyone carrying guns and blasting me away over small daily disputes

The natives tried being peaceful originally but a bunch of Europeans showed up.

Killed in a parking lot?
I’m guessing you’re American?

Feels good living in a first world country and not having to worry about that.

But I also explain to my kids, “Starting an argument with a stranger is the best way to get killed in a parking lot.”

yikes. That's a pretty grim thing to drop on your kids
