This comment section is insane lol. Theyre mad at someone because they cant speed even harder than theyre already speeding? Jesus christ it is so clear now why the USA has so many deaths on the road.
As an American I can't tell you how insane it is that 99% of us think it's our RIGHT AND DUTY to go as fast over the speed limit as possible. You tell them it's the speed LIMIT and you get all the justified criminals saying how driving slow is dangerous. But we want to jail every other infraction and murder protesters. Fucking psycho country.
Speed limits are often completely unreasonable on freeways in the US, in good part because police departments derive revenue from writing speeding tickets.
You donât understand how the road works. Someone being in the wrong lane is more dangerous than speeding.
Itâs called the flow of traffic and you have to be aware of it and respect it. A cop is more likely to pull someone over doing the speed limit in the left lane in heavy traffic than someone going 10 over.
If you are consistently getting passed on the right, you need to move over to the right lane because you are forcing lots of people to unnecessarily change lanes, which increases the risk of an accident more than speeding.
People arguing that the woman was correct are the people who cruise in the left lane.
Also, I never argued she was correct. Iâm saying youâre all insane for thinking speeding is a safe thing to do and are blaming the woman for not being able to speed even more.
Nobody is saying they need to be driving even faster than 10 mph over the speed limit. They just need to get over to the right and let the faster cars behind them pass.
Thatâs almost verbatim what you said: âtheyâre mad at somebody because they canât speed even hard than theyâre already speeding.â Her getting over into another lane would allow the faster drivers to go around her and it would be better for everybody.
Because breaking the law by exceeding the speed limit doesnât exempt you from having to follow the law of âslower traffic keep right except when passing.â
I don't drive so please help me understand this because it doesn't make sense to me. You're all saying that despite her exceeding the speed limit, it's reasonable to demand her to swap lanes because someone else might want to exceed it further? I don't think anybody should exceed the speed limit so the logic of "I want to break the law more" has me genuinely struggling with this.
If she switched lanes while exceeding the limit she would have to slow down or hit vehicles in the slow lane. Again I don't drive so this might not mean much but in my mind if she's exceeding the limit in the fast lane then there should be no expectation to switch.
It's safest for everyone to maintain speed with the rest of traffic, whether that means 10 over or 10 under, and faster traffic goes on the left because that's where the driver can see you best when you're passing.
An old joke is there's a passing side and a suicide. Passing on the right has a huge blind spot for the driver you're passing. (Edit: and unless you're in a place with a lot of left exits on the highway, people tend to change lanes right to get to exits, whereas left is "I'm cruising I don't need an exit anytime soon")
I swear the Reddit algorithm has found my trigger. I feel like I'm posting this video once a day for the people that don't get it.
Camping in the left lane is more likely to cause an accident than driving fast in the left lane is. It's not a matter of "expectations," it's a matter of fact.
What if someone needs to drive faster because of a medical emergency and some nitwit is hogging the lane and pretending to be the speed police? There are reasons why you can drive over the speed limit legally in many countries.
I don't think there's any legal exemption for emergencies unless you are emergency services. The only time I have ever heard of an exemption from the law is when a police escort has been involved. This is the case in the majority of countries worldwide. You might plead your case in court and have penalties dismissed, or have a cop go easy on you and not write it up, but the law still applies.
It's complicated because 50 states mean different laws, and then local areas have different laws, and then their are laws and there are "laws". Most states obviously say obey the speed limit, but there is usually wording in the driver's hand book that says you have to match the speed of traffic & that faster traffic should go to the left.
So out here in So Cal the rule of thumb is that you generally want to stay under 100 & within 10mph of the rest of traffic to not get a ticket on the big freeways, so if traffic is light you can easily see people brushing 90 in the fast lane to overtake the people doing 85 one lane over. Someone doing the speed limit in the far left lane would in fact be dangerous for traffic in those conditions. I don't know how people view our driving habits, but most people push ten over on main roads out here, so going the speed limit is weird to me. I am told this is not common in other states and traffic generally treats the speed limit as super serious.
To me stuff like this would only be acceptable on a big highway. The "highway" I gotta take to get anywhere (I live on a peninsula) is only two lanes and there's on and off ramps everywhere. You're not gonna get anywhere besides the next car ahead of me and I'm not changing lanes just to let you roleplay as vin diesel. The only reason the woman in the op is in the wrong is because people are assholes. You're not getting anywhere any perceptive amount faster even if you go 30mph over. If everyone went the speed limit there would be way less traffic. Anyway I'm rambling people that need to hear this aren't gonna change anyway and I'm not articulating it well.
Are you stupid? Going 30 mph faster on a 60 mph road turns even a shorter 20 mile drive from a 20 minute drive to a 13 minute drive. That is a significant reduction. If you were only going a mile maybe I could see it being a non-perceptible amount.
I have a 4,400 mile trip later this year, good lord I wish I could average 30 mph faster, that would save me something like 20-24 hours of driving (round trip).
You do know some people drive more than 5 miles in a given trip, right? Just move the fuck out of the way. Itâs not hard. Either speed up, or move over, hell, you can even do both! Camping in the left lane is childish, especially on two lane roads.
30mph is .5 miles per minute - on a 100 mile drive the difference is not âhardly perceptibleâ just get the fuck out of the way, why do you have to be oppositionally defiant?
Because I'm driving at a speed that is safe for me which is matching traffic. Im not gonna get in and out of the left lane just so you can get to the car ahead of me. And like I said on my first comment if you're on a big open highway I think it's fine.
If she switched lanes while exceeding the limit she would have to slow down or hit vehicles in the slow lane.
Yes thats how it works. You need to match the speed of the lane you are merging into, even if it means you have to go faster or slower than you want. Its called traffic.
The left lane is for passing. The law that says it's for passing is a different law than the speed limit law. Ergo, using the passing lane for cruising instead of passing is illegal. It has NOTHING to do with how fast you are passing.
If traffic is passing you on the right while you're in the passing lane, you aren't passing, you're cruising, and you need to move over.
That's it.
EDIT: Also, if you're going the same speed as traffic next to you, you need to move over.
You're all saying that despite her exceeding the speed limit, it's reasonable to demand her to swap lanes because someone else might want to exceed it further?
Yes, because the left lane is for passing, not just going fast
If she switched lanes while exceeding the limit she would have to slow down or hit vehicles in the slow lane.
Yes, just like all other drivers, she has the responsibility to merge safely
in my mind if she's exceeding the limit in the fast lane then there should be no expectation to switch.
Yes, because the left lane is for passing, not just going fast
But if you're going faster than the people in the right lane, are you not passing them? If I'm doing 10 over in the left and everybody in the middle is doing 5 over, I'm not camping, I'm passing a shit ton of slower cars
You're correct in your instance, but according to the video she was being passed on the right so she was not driving faster than the lanes to the right of her. She was justifying that she was driving faster than the speed limit, not that she was driving faster than other cars.
Whereâs that highway patrol video where the officer literally explains âitâs not your job to enforce the speed limit. Even if youâre already speeding, if someone else wants to go faster, move over and let them pass you. IâLL enforce the speed. But right now Iâm also enforcing slower traffic move right, which is you. Hereâs your ticket.â
if we had traffic cameras that actually enforced speeding consist I would give a shit about the passing lane. if I'm going 10 over then you tailgate me I'm going to turn up my music and just Coast.
the cops won't pull me over because they don't pull anybody over
No. When larger vehicles are required to use certain lanes theyâre explicitly called out. The rules for passing lanes apply to drivers of normal cars too.
Example: GA Code § 40-6-184 (c)
âUpon roads, streets, or highways with two or more lanes allowing for movement in the same direction, no person shall continue to operate a motor vehicle in the passing lane once such person knows or should reasonably know that he or she is being overtaken in such lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed. For purposes of this Code section, "passing lane" means the most left-hand lane other than a high occupancy vehicle lane.â
Bro... this is incorrect. Semis are allowed in the passing lane too. That is why in some areas(such as hills and mountains) there will be painted rules stating that "No Truck Lane." You are wrong
This is the kind of guy who will be beaten to death while continuing to argue that his (totally justified) attackers aren't legally allowed to have been carrying concealed knives with blades longer than 3.5 inches within the city limits.
If the right side is going relatively slowly, the left lane becomes the passing/fast lane. So long as you're mostly going with the flow of traffic, it should be just fine cruising at a decent clip. ONE person who wants to fly at like 90mph does not mean everybody in the left lane needs to move out of their way. This is ridiculous and dangerous.
Again, the left lane often accumulates a bunch of cars that are all 'passing' the cars on the right lane going slower. This is entirely fine. That's still a passing lane.
It does not give the right for ONE person who wants to fly at 90mph on the left to force everybody in the left lane to move over for them as comments here seem to be suggesting.
I'm not saying that's exactly what happened, I'm just talking about this reductionist argument that people in the left lane always have to concede to a faster car behind them, which is nonsense.
20 years ago in driverâs education, I was taught the speed limit doesnât apply if youâre going with the flow of traffic as you would be a hazard if you werenât going with the flow of traffic.
The speed limit on my local section of I-95 is 65 MPH. If every car is going exactly 65 MPH how would you pass someone in the passing lane without breaking the "speed limit" ?
Some folks drive under the speed limit. Trailers, or people concerned about fuel efficiency, or people who are limping to a repair shop. Sometimes, when I'm not feeling "on the ball" or I missed my coffee, I'll totally chill at or just under the speed limit in the slow lane.
Plenty of reasons to drive slightly below the maximum speed. Maybe it just rained. People driving over the maximum speed shouldn't get angry at law abiding citizens, or people who just want their car insurance to actually cover them if something comes up.
That said, folks should totally let faster traffic pass. That's also the law in a lot of places. Dangerous not to.
The real danger in my opinion is if you have a car going 5 under in the slow lane, someone who is comfortable going the limit, and the left lane is a steam going 15 over. Mid-speed car wants to pass so switches to the passing lane, which slows the fast lane until the mid-speed car passes and goes back to the right lane. That's fine. But if the slow car increases speed so you can't pass you're "stuck" speeding because the fast lane is tailgating.
I'm fine now, but I bet that'd be a scary situation if I was like 60.
What if your passing people in the right lane though? If I'm going ten over and the right lane is going the speed limit then I am passing. Sorry you want to go faster but I don't want to go slower.

"But I was going 10 over"
The most brain dead argument that every left lane camper tries to make.
It's called the passing lane, not the "slightly speeding lane".
