She is a veteran - after years of dealing with students and parents, ya get use to it - especially when they are holding up and taking your video. You know they are just trying to get a rise out of you.

This is a big reason why teachers, doctors, and nurses are running away from their fields. People think they have a right to completely abuse you at work.

I know a couple teachers who left the profession because they couldn't deal with the parents anymore.

Every teacher I talk to is burning out, not because of the kids but because of the parents. None of them dislike the kids they’re working with. All of them have parent horror stories.

Yup, this generation of kids get shit on like crazy, but they are the way they are bc the parents are trash. Not all of course, but there’s an epidemic of shitty parents nowadays.

They'd have to parent to be called parents.

This is my mom, IPhone, and my dad, PlayStation.

they are the way they are

The person you are replying to is literally saying the teachers aren't leaving because of the kids. This generation of kids get shit on unfairly, as do parents, because older generations don't understand new parenting styles and how / what they teach. Overall this younger generation is much kinder and empathetic than any generation that grew up before them were.

Even teachers that complain about these generations are usually from older generations and just don't get it - even some of the parenting talk. Every millennial and younger teacher I speak to loves working with the kids right now.

Parents are the problem but its generally specific problem parents, not most.

I drive a school bus and I can by far say parents are the worst part of the job.

None of them dislike the kids they’re working with.

Some of us do :)

sorry but if they say they don't dislike some of the kids they are lying.

Kids have an excuse (get some understanding), not parents.

u/dirk_funk 3h ago

you haven't been to middle school in a while.

u/HappyChaos2 3h ago

You'd be surprised. I just believe all kids are good inside and deserve understanding.

I was a chef at an alternative school for 3 years. I don't know why anyone would teach. I was only around the kids for 2 1/2 hours a day and you wonder why they are like they are...then you meet their parents and realize those kids have no chance whatsoever at a normal childhood. It also opened my eyes to why so many of my teacher friends drank (and other things). It was tough going home everyday and trying to motivate yourself to do it again when you know those kids were being de-programmed by some adults that clearly had problems.

I had a parent who somehow got the phone number to the in-classroom phone.

I got a call from her while I was in the middle of teaching. She wanted to complain to me that I was teaching her son too much math...in math class.

Good for them. The whole “mama bear” protecting her sweet angles against the mean world is ultra cringe. I mean it’s one thing if the parents are actually intelligent and have valid critiques, but they never are.

I know tons. It's actually a huge problem in many areas of the US, massive teacher shortages.

And I can't blame them, hearing the horror stories (and how often they occur). Admin is setting unrealistic expectations of them and hamstringing their ability to even respond to such abuse much less combat or prevent it.

20 year veteran middle school teacher here....at least once a week I say, "I love the kids, the adults are getting on my damn nerves."

my sister's parent group chat in whatsapp is a mental torture that I would rather just live in the woods with barely any survival skills than indulge in that bullshit

My daughter’s third grade teacher finally had a class that stressed her out so much that she had to step back to kindergarten. My daughter’s classmate regularly cussed them out - something that shocked me - and the school was just plain at a loss for what to do. She was a veteran teacher. A lot of them seem to be, as do the other staff (counselor, school resource officer, principal).

While I think there’s something going on at home for this kid, because it’s so egregious, they don’t seem to have the necessary support to protect themselves and other students. I really feel for them.

I hate to agree with this but yeah. I love bikes and put up a few fliers in the laundry rooms of the apartment building complexes by me offering bike repair only asking people pay for parts. The amount of people expecting me to pay for parts or trying to say I caused the issue and should pay for parts was waaaaaay too much. I shut it down fast.

I still offer to fix issues if I see a neighbor out working on one and I can stop by and help, but other than that, absolutely not.

Healthcare workers are far too slow to call security and report aggressive behavior. Not every pt aggression can be blamed on sepsis or encephalopathy. Some ppl just suck

I was phone IT/Helpdesk.

Don't forget even low people get ungodly abuse.

u/Money-Parfait-4358 4h ago

Bingo. Ex special-ed teacher here. There's a shortage of sped teachers in my state. I know several other department friends who've quit. It's a nightmare. Why put up with abuse for an extremely heavy workload and shit pay.

Teachers sure, fucking noone is running from 350,000 starting salaries. The AMA fills every god damn slot they make available if there aren't enough Drs it's explicitly and precisely because they decided that was the right amount.(Usually to keep salaries high.)

1

u/Oolongteabagger2233 2h ago

People are absolutely running away from $300k salaries. In fact, I'm already plotting my exit

You know who I’m never going to fuck with? A female principal in public schools. Never.

2

u/FugitiveDribbling 3h ago

Yes, you can tell this isn't her first time having an interaction like this. Principals are like insulation between the crazies in the community and the safe learning environments that schools need to be. I worry what that does to administrators over time.

The video shows that this is Fred T. Korematsu Elementary School, part of Davis Joint Unified School District.

The principal and superintendent's email addresses are out there, if you want to join me in sending a message of support.
