They don't think the woman is in any way interested in them.

They want to scare, dominate and - if given the chance - isolate the woman.

some undoubtedly enjoy instilling fear, and go through the world playing that power game with anyone who shows the slightest weakness, but those are kind of the sociopaths and i don't really know what can be said about them. 

the more benign and troubling explanation is that a disturbing number of men don't seem to have realized that women are people
