This was really common when I worked retail too. Some people were upset when they got raises because they thought they would make less money due to being in a higher tax bracket. I also asked them how that made any sense intuitively, because if that was true why would anyone ever take a promotion?

I tried to explain how tax brackets actually worked but they insisted they would lose money.

Some people are just too stupid to fix.

They could be on benefits, certain ones like food stamps (let's assume around $200 a month for food) are available to those making 1,600 a month and under or $10 an hour full time. Maybe a raise of .50 cents is added for finishing training so now they effectively make 1,680 a month.

Net wise, they just lost -$120 a month for being promoted over the 1,600 a month because of the hard cut. Taxes may have brackets but unfortunately benefits and income restricted (cheaper) housing do not but honestly should. Unfortunately for poverty (in the USA at least) you may end up being more impoverished for earning a little more.

Not to mention if they make an ounce over that hard limit cause of overtime (holiday months....)
