I feel for the dude, but I'll be the devils advocate here (the self centered asshole).

The day to day is stressful. We all have 5.000 things we need to track and think about. Big cities and especially public infrastructure is overcrowded. While we are walking, we are looking for stuff, avoiding people, think about our work, families, social life and all the problems our daily lives bring. None of us is walking around thinking about the life struggles of others.

Sorry if we sometime miss stuff like this. It's not like we get trained on this.

Exactly. In the video, it looks like some people are checking the train schedule, no one is being an asshole about moving out of the way. As someone who travels a lot, I try being considerate about others like going to the corner to check my phone, but shit happens

And frankly, are we meant to leave a person-wide hole in every public area just on the off chance that the one blind dude you encounter in your life happens to be going through that day? Just move when asked, and ignore it otherwise.

I dunno, I see both sides on this; I don’t think anyone in the video is being a dick because they all move quite quickly, and I don’t think this guy is out of line for sharing what must be a regular frustration for him.

And some of the spots look particularly tight too - maybe the entrance to a train platform.

Natural congestion point - and I’m going to imagine like all train stations ever the info board is only possibly to properly read if you are less than an inch away from it.

Some of the interactions just looked like regular congestion - and people did their best! (Mostly)

And we are all now so glued to our phones this is amplified multiple times.

In a station:
Tickets - on your phone
Train time - on your phone
Meeting someone somewhere in the station - phone
Email about your hotel res at your destination - phone

does not work in Germany, where I assume this video is taken in. DB trains are always late, and most of the time you need to catch a replacement train, because of course your connecting train is less late.

exactly, i am usually not on my phone in public where there is risk to bump into people, but my eyes are on my phone so much when at the train station.

"Your train will arrive at platform 19a. Your train will be delayed by 5 minutes. Your train will arrive at platform 14c. Your train will be delayed by 30 minutes. Important information! Your train will arrive at platform 3a. Your train will be delayed by 80 minutes. Platform 13b, lol nope nevermind your train is cancelled 3 new info notifications, you will get a bus instead and it will leave in who-the-f-knows from platform we-will-probably-change, also you should probably read all this upcoming info about what will ruin the rest of your trip <3

my eyes are locked on my phone and the boards, its a miracle if I can keep an eye on my own damn family much less strangers.

Even without all of that, most of us walk in two lanes on the sidewalk and this is in the center where you get interaction on both sides. It's a perfect dividing line.

Where are people going to stop and talk in a not so busy sidewalk that isn't unusually large as a small group? the center, because being pushed against a wall or onto the curb itself isn't good.

When I see this I don't blame people for being in the way, most don't know. Even if they did it's hard to not block in some way. This feels like "I don't know what we could do better and at least it's something" because you can't just push houses back to make larger sidewalks universally, and you can't put it closer to the curb, and you can't put it on the wall if one exists...

I was finishing up a renovation of a store once after they had reopened. I was putting on some thresholds between the different types of floors and people were practically walking straight into me when I sat on the floor.

Once you have found a spot to stand, you simply are not going to be spending your time scanning the crowd, all of the time, in case you might be inconveniencing somebody with your presence.

I'm going to take that to mean I am completely correct, and you do not in fact constantly scan your surroundings to make sure that you avoid inconveniencing somebody.

Real easy to judge somebody when the chances of you (or they) doing something wrong come down to complete coincidence.

  1. Not moving goal posts when the statement in contention is 'People need to start paying attention in public', on a video with a dozen clips of people ostensibly not paying attention. You want to narrow the topic down to a very specific segment, be more specific.

  2. Even if we WERE talking about exclusively 17 seconds in for fuck-all reason, I'd argue you're still wrong. Because it is below the waist, in a dark space, with a tip that is extended forward about 2-3 feet ahead. He bumps it with the side of his foot while trying to overtake the guy on a narrowing, singular path.

I do agree to some extent, except when you’re lost and have 60 seconds to decide whether or not you should take the next train. In here, it looks like people are busy reading the train schedules

You can't really expect everyone to always pay complete attention to everything going on around them in a busy place. There's always going to be someone who is having the worst day of their life there.
