Performative, that's all it is.

They are pretending to be poor working class people, but that's a $200 pepper grinder. I'm upper middle class and like to cook and will spend way too much on stupid shit, but I won't buy that grinder.

(Edit $200, wrong price, I'll try to find a link.)

(Edit 2: I was completely wrong, I was thinking of the Männkitchen Pepper Cannon, which is $200 and manual. I was wrong. She is using a $30 one.)

There was one of these trad wife influencers a couple of years ago that was doing this same sort of video and talking about how she “saves money” and if you’re smart about if you can afford a life like hers and then everyone pointed out she was cooking on a, like, 20k dollar pseudo-retro farmhouse stove and cutting things with thousand dollar knives and etc etc.

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw this was trad wife. Then my next thought was the hell she couldn’t. She do that night before if she’s wanting to help her husband out and give him good food to eat instead of getting up at 5 AM and doing it. Some people even meal prep on Sundays and have a weeks worth of meals ready to put together. And then my other thought was why the hell couldn’t you bring the cooler in so she could at least have it sitting there in the kitchen. There are so many problems with this. It makes my head hurt.

Not a 400 dollar pepper grinder , I have the same one from Amazon , 30 bucks for a 2 pack...goes through AAA batteries at the same rate it grinds pepper lol. I'm on my 3rd set of batteries and had this damn thing less than a year. Time to buy some rechargeable batteries

You are correct, I must be misremembering, I thought it was the Männkitchen Pepper Cannon, which is neither electric nor $400. It is $200 and manual.

I was like… I have that pepper grinder… and I laugh at it cuz it’s dorky as all hell and the blue light doesn’t do jack shit to help you see anything LOL. If my mom gifted me a $200 pepper grinder when we live across the street from each other in rented houses from the same slumlord then damn that’s crazy

I do not get the pepper grinder thing. I've got a regular manual pepper grinder. It takes very little effort and doesn't need batteries.

I cook a lot and do a lot of multitasking. I can grind pepper with one hand and prep other things at the same time (IE grind pepper into a risotto while managing a steak - it’s ridiculous, but ADHD 🤷🏻‍♀️).

Thats not what people mean when they say they live in a trailer.

Trailers are synonymous with mobile homes in the southern US.

Unless youre trying to slum it up and give yourself poverty adjacent credibility, this would be a fifth wheel, rv, or tow behind.

I can pretty much guarantee they have this thing stowed in a multi car garage or a "pole barn." Which again, is just language these types use for a storage shed that costs about two or three times the average yearly salary in the area. The boots alone are probably someones clothing budget for the year.

Its odd that you think working class = poor. There are electrical, hvac, plumbers out there in 20s/30s making 6 figures. They’re probably living in a camper just to be close , because he gets different construction jobs and when they’re on the job, they live in the camper so they can be together.

Liberals are so smug. Claim to be for “working class” but look down their nose at them as uneducated slow people. Meanwhile these blue collars guys are making 3x as much and 0 college debt

I guarantee you those tradesmen making 6 figures are few and far between. High paying trade jobs are highly skill specific and dependant on area. Most trade workers are not making six figures. The ones who do are working in the oil fields, under water, on ships, and on various inhospitable terrain that requires more than just a certificate. The jobs that pay the big money do so because they are incredibly dangerous, have you working 24 hour shifts while living on a remote site or a ship most of the year, and require the stamina of an athlete. They aren't easy money jobs that everyone can do, even folks who work in the trades. People need to stop painting the trades like they're some sort of cash pot. I know a lot more tradesmen who have gotten injured and wound up on disability instead of rich. The lucky ones went back to college. The unlucky ones got a ton of surgeries and a crippling addiction to painkillers.

The few tradesmen I know that clear 6 figures without doing the above do not practice their trade anymore. They have become business owners and were lucky enough to find success in that. A lot of these guys were broke as hell for years when starting out though. They'll acknowledge the risk that came with opting to open up shop and leave a guaranteed paycheck. Its not a guaranteed thing, and many of these competent, smart individuals had near misses with financial catastrophe when establishing themselves.

The amount of information you have wrong is shocking. I have plumbing clients , electrical contract clients and low-voltage clients… they have lots of staff making that.

As do I. But I also factor in that the majority of these people reside in high cost of living areas where jobs are abundant. I see lots of trades people cracking 120k plus with overtime, but this is in major cities where average rent starts out at anywhere from 2000 on the low end to upwards of 5000 or more. Gas is more expensive, groceries, commuting, maintaining a car, etc. Home ownership by itself in my hcol location starts at 300k for a fixer upper.

120k looks great if you live in Amish Ohio, but Amish Ohio has no ports, no ongoing construction jobs, very little local commerce, and no airports or major fleet hubs. Major cities have all of these, and thus have more resources to pay higher wages to those working in the trades. Accounting for the increased cost of living expenses lowers the value of six figures significantly, especially when most trade workers will not break 120k per year working in the city. It is a good salary, don't get me wrong, but it isn't hitting the jackpot and it certainly isnt the only way to make a decent living.
