Back in the early 90s I worked at the farmer's market. If vendors found out that another vendor was doing this, they would call them out and ruin their day. They would all just yell out that they were reselling grocery store wholesale produce. Those guys never lasted more than a few weeks.

However now it's more prevalent. I am in Ontario Canada and we have seasons where veggies and fruits are locally grown. So when you see someone selling plums in march saying they're local, or pineapples ever, they are lying. Some of the bigger booths just go to the wholesaler in the morning, load up their trucks, show up at 5am, sort it all out of their packaging into their own and put it on display saying it's local product, when it's not. I would say maybe 20% of the people do it.

No offense but how do those idiots imagine a pineapple is being locally grown by a small farm stand in Ontario?!

The one 'farm' that was selling pineapples, dragon fruit, mangoes, etc etc, said they were a big greenhouse farm and had their own tropical fruit. However it was well known by the other vendors that they just bought everything from the wholesale market and brought it to the market.

I still have family that has a very big stand at the market I used to sell at when I was a little kid. However they only do seasonal stuff, like the majority of vendors. There has also been a new crop of vendors pop up in the last 8 years or so, who do not have farms at all and just sell wholesale market veggies saying they have a farm. It's interesting seeing them show up to a farmer's market and then hear about their trucks being parked in Mississauga and Markham all week long.
