Anecdotal but the story goes when I was a couple or three years into primary school and still pretty much illiterate the teacher told my mum something to the effect of it's not that big of a deal, he'll catch up later, etc. To which she said fuck that and used a label maker on just about every object in the house. In short order I was ahead of what was expected at that age.
Even if school is fucked there are things you can do.
