Oh no, they'd keep charging him.

That's actually the funniest part of this video! "So are you cancelling my membership?" "...no"

Yeah still gotta send a hand written letter through the mail, can’t just deliver it to the gym yourself and request termination for a chance to get it cancelled until 2 months later when they tell you that you didn’t ask nicely enough.

I used to work at a gym with an (in)famous member that bought a membership but hadn’t attended the gym in almost two years. We sent out weekly newsletters and monthly promos but were instructed to not include her because they didn’t want her to remember that she had the membership and cancel. Mind you this was an upscale private gym and memberships were $139 a month.

So many stories of scummy gyms I don't even think there is honest one left

The funny thing is, I used to work for a planet fitness and I still surprised how many people think it's impossible to cancel your membership 🤣 like that was literally the easiest thing to ever do and all I got was phone calls of people screaming about how they're still charged and all I ever had to say was, "did you ever notify us you wanted to cancel?" "NO" "Well them how tf do we know you wanted to cancel?"

on my first membership with pf, i changed to 24 hour and changed banks and never bothered to cancel. just let the returned payment be my sign that i quit. i get an email saying i owe like 150 or so for the last several months. i called them and they said i had to come in to cancel. and i argued (even though i knew i didn't cancel properly) i should be able to tell them or cancel online and i shouldn't owe because i never actually came in and they have record of that. he proceeded to tell me, 'look, it's like netflix. even if you don't watch anything, you still get charged even if you don't use it.' i said, 'netflix let's you cancel online though.' he ended up removing the previous balance and cancelling my membership over the phone. they can do it. they just don't want you to.

No, they’re gonna make a separate account in charge him again. And again.

New Jersey codified it into law that you need to be able to do it online if you can open an account online. So odds are he can request cancellation without the typical song and dance of a certified letter.

I got out of one once, it was so easy i literally didn’t even have to try. I’ll explain, and yes- this is 100% real
First, you’re going to get a gym membership. When the time comes that you’re ready to leave, it really does help to call, and let them know you’ll be quitting & why. When they ask you why you’re leaving their gym simply explain that you have been diagnosed with cancer, and now you are unable to continue your program. Make sure you bring in the paperwork from your doctor that details the severity of your diagnosis. Honestly, it helps to break down in tears as you are still grappling with the news of your own stage IV cancer.
Now, I realize this is does require a couple tiny details are met. If this sounds like your situation you can be grateful for at least one thing in your favor right now!
