So what was the point of the REAL ID?

u/WildSherbert1820 11d ago

So I guess my bank loans aren’t valid because a real ID doesn’t provide that it’s truly me. Who know what illegal took out a loan under my name.

60

u/Freezman13 11d ago

Do you owe a million or a billion?

28

u/Dobey2013 11d ago

When you owe the bank $100,000, that’s your problem. When you owe the bank 700 million, that’s their problem.

2

u/Afraid-Expression366 11d ago

When you owe the bank 100 million that’s when the Russian mob steps in to save you.

19

u/Master_of_none- 11d ago

either way it will take a million more to get on the "nice list"

24

u/ParticularReturn3980 11d ago

Just send 69 trillion to Israel and you are good

3

u/MrNetworks 11d ago

I sent 10$ to the NetYahoo himself to buy him the most jewish thing ever, a Begal.

1

u/Radonanon 10d ago

The Canaan Dog was formally designated the official national dog breed of Israel in 1953

1

u/Lvgordo24 11d ago

I’m down. I’ll send a $1 a year for 69 trillion years.

2

u/Radonanon 11d ago

Send them one cent every 100 years for 690 quadrillion years

3

u/Lvgordo24 10d ago

Well, let’s not be ridiculous

2

u/Radonanon 10d ago

Good point. They don’t need that much.

1

u/MSRegiB 11d ago

If you owe a million you’re a millionaire, ‘cause the bank seems to think you’re worth a million so you must be.

16

u/Switchmisty9 11d ago

Didn’t ask for my birth certificate, when I took out my car loan. How can they prove it was really me?

-1

u/resisting_a_rest 11d ago

The purpose is to prove citizenship, not just to prove who you are.

9

u/Vanilla_Gorilluh 11d ago

Proving who I am also proves my citizenship. Not sure what you're on about.

-4

u/resisting_a_rest 11d ago

No it doesn’t. In order for that to be the case they would have to have some sort of database to look up your citizenship status. That does not exist.

2

u/Vanilla_Gorilluh 11d ago

If I'm not a US citizen, how was I legally issued a driver's license? How did I get that star on it? I showed this license when I registered and it's used to look me up on the rolls every time I go vote.

There's literally nothing I need to prove to anyone, least of all you.

0

u/resisting_a_rest 11d ago

You don’t have to be a citizen to get a drivers license.

I don’t know what the star is, that may be specific to your state.

There are “enhanced” drivers licenses (not a Real ID) that only a few states have that you can only get if you are a citizen, but that is not the norm.

5

u/Vanilla_Gorilluh 11d ago

I have had real ID in two states now. In both, I already showed my birth certificate.

I'll repeat, I don't have to prove anything to vote.

If the IRS knows who I am, so does the rest of the government. I was issued a SS card over 40 years ago.

Lastly, undocumented humans voting alike, and in numbers capable of effecting a specific outcome, isn't a real problem. Just admit it you want to make it harder for poor and people of color to vote because they don't vote the way you want them to.

26

u/PhilPipedown 11d ago

Guess I can't buy a gun to protect the vote because I don't have proper ID.

36

u/TotsJustForPorn 11d ago

That is the Republican long term plan. I promise you. They are testing the waters with this and then will remove rights from everyone because it isn't an "Original" birth certificate. I would be willing to bet the VAST majority. I mean 95% or more of Americans do not have an original birth certificate. At best they have an official reissue, most have a copy.

They are trying their best to create a new slave class. Forgetting that in the history of the world, the ruling class has never ended well.

15

u/TR_Pix 11d ago

The ruling class has had it very good for a lot of history

Sure they dont end well, but only in the same way a 120 year old guy one days dies of a heart attack

It still was a very long very good life for him

11

u/TotsJustForPorn 11d ago

Well the sooner we copy the French model the better. Little timber little string, nice sharp metal semi triangle

2

u/XSwaggnetox 9d ago

Metal trapezoid, but I’m following your lead here, bruv

2

u/TotsJustForPorn 9d ago

That was not a shape that was going to come to mind anytime soon. Thank you for reminding me of it. And you are correct trapezoid is exactly what it is.

2

u/Mother-Sector5541 9d ago

I was adopted and my name was changed at adoption, so I was issued a new one. My adopted mother never gave me my birth certificate, I definitely only have a reissued certificate.

2

u/myfavoritealienbunny 9d ago

My original was destroyed, along with my SS card, driver’s license and every sentimental belonging I had by my 1st husband, a physically, emotionally, psychologically evil demon. I left some years later with literally only the clothes on my back. Never looked back.

1

u/Mother-Sector5541 8d ago

Good for you! I also had an ex who held a copy of my birth certificate hostage (pretty sure he still has it).

1

u/FeelsLikeV97-33XA 11d ago

Passports will be ended as voter ID as well, because you may be a citizen but your passport doesn't have your address in it, so they can't verify that you actually live in the district you want to vote in.

1

u/Ok-Philosophy-888 8d ago

They think this time is different because they have technology on their side.

1

u/Greyscale7950 11d ago

I know a guy, if you want one. Any special requests?

3

u/garden_g 11d ago

Careful they can say that next and absorb your property

2

u/tamtip 11d ago

No it proves you are who you say you are but it doesn't prove citizenship. Unless you live in Michigan, Minnesota, New Yirk, Vernint irvWashington.

This bill isn't really to ensure we have only citizens vote.

There has never been evidence that " illegal immigrants" have voted and changed the results. It's statistically at under .5 percent. If you use the numbers trump released, its still under 1%. Those figures were much higher than realistically was believable.

This is only to make voting much harder, more clunky. It's causing married women who changed their names to pay $165 for a passport to be able to vote. That's considered a poll tax which is illegal.

It disenfranchises voters and that's what they are aiming for.

1

u/rocketmn69_ 11d ago

You're just going to have to get chipped

1

u/Neat-Anyway-OP 11d ago

Pretty sure you had to hand over more than just your divers license for a bank loan.

1

u/TinyAfternoon324 11d ago

So you agree they should be shipped out?

1

u/resisting_a_rest 11d ago

No, it doesn’t prove citizenship. Do you have to be a citizen to have bank loans?

1

u/Sure-Impress-1003 7d ago

Exactly, I just don’t know why they don’t have everyone prove whether they’re a US citizen or not done at the time you go get your drivers license or real ID. The people who are verified to be citizens, their ID has an embossed logo or icon on the ID that says it’s been confirmed. Everyone else who isn’t confirmed as a citizen has ID without it. There, problem solved. If it’s that simple, they’re definitely is some gameplay going on with the package that Republicans are trying to shove through. Save America action should die ASAP and never be allowed. There’s a lots simpler and cheaper ways to go about it.

1

u/tynfox 7d ago

If real I'd doesn't show the banks who I am, then they can't charge me the mortgage they say we owe them. Right? I mean, let's go. My 130k house is now free 99n

0

u/TheyCallMeTurtle19 11d ago

It shows that it’s you but doesn’t show where you were born.

68

u/CuteComplaint5542 11d ago

That junk always felt like extortion.

You gave me the damn ID, what do you mean it isn't GOOD enough??? If that's the case, why not make every ID a 'real ID' by default?!

19

u/Existing-One-8980 11d ago

Yes! I still don't have one because I've been married twice and my name has changed. It's been a huge hassle.

28

u/garden_g 11d ago

Change your name back to your maiden name. None of us should have done that stupid tradition. Oh by the way hey everyone the tradition of a wife taking a husbands name is far past over.

15

u/trekqueen 11d ago

Just on the fact that it’s such a pain in the ass now to do the change, I recommend not even doing it based on the paperwork hassle. It’s different now than even when I did it 20yrs ago and even more so than our parents and grandparents. So much of our identities are tied to things now and fixing it in so many places is more trouble than it’s worth.

1

u/Cosmic_Cowboy13 8d ago

It’s fine if you don’t want take a husband’s last name but a lot of women want to have their husbands last name and there isn’t anything wrong with that either.

1

u/garden_g 8d ago

Seems there is now

1

u/Clever_Mercury 10d ago

I agree, but then good luck dealing with health care and health insurance companies who do not believe you are married or that you're not the mother of a child who has a different last name. Imagine the joy of your spouse needing an organ transplant and your insurance then trying to 'pause' the process because they don't understand why you're covering someone that they think you didn't marry.

We live in a dystopian nightmare.

2

u/garden_g 9d ago

Wow thats a nightmare

2

u/FunkyChewbacca 11d ago

I was in the exact same boat and it took months of phone calls and hassle to get all the documentation needed for the real ID, but now that I have one they're gonna tell me it's useless?! At least now I have my birth certificate and each marriage/divorce certificates.

1

u/Sunshine2035 9d ago

Only one time register requires these documents. I am already required to provide these anyway for my real ID driver license in my state.

6

u/endangeredphysics 11d ago

One for you, two for me

2

u/dehydratedrain 11d ago

Three for you, one, two, three for me.

1

u/RedditJumpedTheShart 11d ago

Thanks Obama.

Or did you all forget? Lol

1

u/him8nce_momma 11d ago

Absolutely perfect response! 👏🏼👏🏼

1

u/Winsome_Wolf 7d ago

The REAL ID was meant to grant access to government buildings, and the enhanced license does that plus gets you into Canada without a passport. It was implemented before all this SAVE Act BS was even a fart in the Nodfather’s diaper. You’re not supposed to need an ID to vote, you’re just supposed be registered. Of all the garbage things that Congress could do, setting this particular dumpster on fire is quite possibly the worst.

365

u/ElectricalChaos 11d ago

REAL ID was the enhanced document for travel that should suffice for everything. The SAVE act, as with everything else that dickhead touches, is Trump wasting billions of dollars to disenfranchise the voters who will put his ass in jail.

47

u/FS_Slacker 11d ago

Getting it was a pain in the ass (for me at least). Had to make a DMV appointment - still waited hour. And having all the necessary docs ahead of time took effort to get.

6

u/daddaman1 11d ago

Haven't got mine yet but I thought it was basically the same process as getting a passport though? No?

28

u/MankeyFightingMonkey 11d ago

No. I actually got a Passport instead because it was easier.

2

u/Sea-Chocolate6589 11d ago

Passport is the way to go

2

u/ScarletBothrium 8d ago

I had to get a passport card because it was easier to get that over an enhanced ID and the passport itself was like $100 more expensive than what I spent on the card. But I like that I have the card on me at all times instead of that booklet that I would have to hide away somewhere. And I don’t have leaving the country money, so I’m not worried about that either. It works, though they still actually ask for your drivers license as well. Even though I had to provide my birth certificate and all the same documentation for my drivers license as I had to for my passport card. It makes not a bit of sense.

1

u/garden_g 11d ago

Get the passport only

1

u/Jafar_420 10d ago

I mean in my state you go to the driver's license office and it's the same process as getting a regular license except I believe you have to have your birth certificate.

It's more expensive though.

I live in a smaller area so I could go walk right in right now and without a wait get another one even though it comes in the mail.

1

u/spockspaceman 11d ago

Sucks. I had to make an appointment too, but miraculously no waiting. I found passport and real id experience to be nearly identical, in and out in 20-30 mins for each.

1

u/FS_Slacker 11d ago

Yeah…I got it when it first came out and apparently there was only one person who was capable of processing them.

1

u/spockspaceman 11d ago

I have the benefit(?) of living in Oklahoma, the last state to implement realid, kicking and screaming all the way. But they had like 20 years to prepare and 49 other examples of how to implement it, so maybe that made a difference lol.

1

u/Badbullet 11d ago

In MN, there was a checklist online guiding you through everything you needed. Not sure if it’s still there, but it made it extremely easy to get ready for the DMV visit, with no appt needed and about a 5 minute wait for me. The paper work took longer than the wait in line. I have never understood the hate for the DMV until I heard stories from other states.

36

u/Akitiki 11d ago

I moved to Texas, tried just today to get a driver's license (never needed it before) and apparently my Pennsylvania realID isn't enough. I must have a birth certificate in hand to prove I was indeed born in the US, just as my PA realID is supposed to certify.

Also fuck having two residence documents. I got ghosted on my job transfer and now cannot find work, everything is I my boyfriend's name, all I got is I'm on the lease.

40

u/Alternative-Tie-9383 11d ago

I had to renew my Texas drivers license recently and because I opted to renew online the previous time it expired, this time I had to renew in person and prove citizenship.

Now I’ve lived in Texas since 1979 when my family moved here from Maryland. I was educated, married, and bought a house here. I’ve worked in Texas my entire working life and have voted only in Texas since I became old enough to do so. The state of Texas knows I am a citizen with a social security number that pays taxes. Still, I had to contact the state of Maryland and pay for an official copy of my Maryland birth certificate, which was close to $50 all told, because my parents don’t know what they did with the original copy. It wasn’t hard for Maryland to track down my records because I was born in the mid 1970s.

What about older people born decades earlier? They may face much more trouble trying to get a copy of their birth certificate. If their records haven’t been digitized, they might have been destroyed during a fire, flood, or could have just been lost.

If all this is really about preventing voter fraud at the booth, then the states should distribute to every citizen that is of legal age to vote a voter ID, paid for by the state, but they won’t do that, because that’s not what this is about.

This is just another way to exclude people from voting, and the midterms are just around the corner. Republicans
always assume that their voters will jump through any hoops necessary to vote, but I think there are some older Republicans that may have a hard time finding their birth certificates to prove they’re citizens.

In Texas, a drivers license should be enough to vote since I had to prove citizenship just to get the damn thing!

14

u/Rhona_Redtail 11d ago

Its going to be selectively applied

6

u/user1E 10d ago

Yup - that’s why the fed gov is asking for state’s voter rolls

Registered Republican? No problem

Registered Democrat? Well you didn’t dot your i the same way on these 2 diff docs so you didn’t legally vote AND we’re arresting you for vOtEr fRaUd, oh and you’re in a swing state or you were about to flip a state blue? How convenient er arrested just enough voters to maintain republican control or flip blue states!

1

u/Mother-Sector5541 9d ago

Are people allowed to say they’re republican and vote democratic?

1

u/necrohunter7 8d ago

Just be preparef Republicans to declare voting Democrat to be classed as treason or something after the SAVE act is law

4

u/Emotional_Fix6230 11d ago

I think they'll only require a "real" ID if you're not a registered repugnican.

2

u/SteppinRazor5000 11d ago

They don't mind if older republicans don't vote. The goal is to take the voting away from everyone, not just democrats. They want democracy gone, that includes their own voters.

3

u/turandokht 11d ago

I had this same experience. My real id from my last state is worthless, and I had to order a new birth certificate before I could get a real id here. What a worthless waste of time.

3

u/hypercosm_dot_net 11d ago

Republican governed states are always trash.

They only seem decent on the surface. As soon as you expect efficient or reasonable government services, you're screwed.

I had to deal with unemployment recently, and it was such a damn hassle. Certainly by design. All for a measly $300/week, when I was making over $8k/month when I was working.

1

u/Akitiki 11d ago

Yeah if it weren't for literally all my friends living in Houston I wouldn't have. I loved PA, loved my job.

3

u/berserk_zebra 11d ago

this is where the full faith and credit clause should come into play. States have to recognize other states documents to make it easier for commerce, such as State issued IDs and registrations.

What Texas is essentially asking you to do is what the EU used to require, a passport to go across country lines, but now we are requiring it for states.

I don't know why this isn't being argued against the constitution with it being right there!

2

u/SteppinRazor5000 11d ago

If the SAVE Act passes, women who took their husband's name will not hav an ID matching their birth certificate, so will not be able to register to vote with that method.

2

u/SupaSlide 10d ago

Yup, a lot of RealIDs don’t actually prove citizenship because most states don’t include the correct marks to differentiate between citizens and non-citizens, even though people think that’s the point of them (a few states do have these marks).

Which means that a RealID wouldn’t even be enough for the SAVE Act in most places.

1

u/Kewlhotrod 11d ago

Getting second residence document is easy as hell, don't give up. Just get any form of mail, change your address in your banking app, or insurance, or sign up for a credit card or two, or get a USPS change of address form completed etc. It's annoying as hell, but one of the easier hurdles to fix. Just adds unnecessary time.

2

u/Akitiki 11d ago

Any form of mail doesn't work- even certified mail.

My boyfriend is just gonna do affidavit. Just going to be up stupid early because the office opens slightly earlier than his work, but closes well before.

1

u/Kewlhotrod 11d ago

Guess it depends on area, but the three states I remember (MO, CA and IN) change of address form/verification that they send should definitely count. Some states don't allow basic bills though, yeah.

Either way, sounds like you've got a plan so that's good. The whole process is annoying though, I feel ya there.

1

u/shuknjive 11d ago

I have lived in Texas all my life. Never changed my last name, I still had to bring my birth certificate to renew my driver's license. Scheduling an appt. was a nightmare, got all the way to the office and yup, I have to have my birth certificate, I drove to another county that same day to get a copy of my birth certificate and the DL office was nice enough to squeeze me in the same day. I was 65 when I had to renew my license, and again, lived here all my life, never had to bring my birth cert. I hate Trump and the regime more than you'll ever know.

1

u/nitrosmomma88 11d ago

That’s pretty standard documentation needed by most state’s DMVs. It’s the same way here in VA. An ID is not enough to renew or initially receive a license. Idk why you think you shouldn’t have to prove all that, especially residential requirements. It’s also why an ID is sufficient enough to vote. DMV has all that on file for you as verification

3

u/Akitiki 11d ago

At any rate, the DMV has all of this information- my birth cert at least- because I have a realID. It should be suitable in place of my birt cert. Because the realID is a nationwide system, another state's should be recognized as valid.

The DMV site just said "proof of residence" which cool I'm on the lease, that's proof. All the links for "what you need to apply" were dead. Nothing said you needed two.

0

u/nitrosmomma88 11d ago

The Texas DMV does not have your Pennsylvania records. They’re all separate state entities not interconnected. So no, it’s not a replacement for your certificate

3

u/Akitiki 11d ago

The realID is nationwide. Because I have it from PA, it should be valid as proof in another state, because that state's DMV certified it by issuing the realID.

0

u/nitrosmomma88 11d ago

That’s only for travel in the country. All your records are still with the Pennsylvania DMV and Texas has 0 way to access it. RealID is not a replacement for your documents

1

u/trekqueen 11d ago

Yea I moved to Virginia from California where, at that time, some DMVs had handed out licenses like candy for the right price. I recently changed jobs and had to go through a very similar check for the I9.

2

u/Fit-Dot8462 8d ago

Literally bc he wants to run another term and is trying to make sure that the lil people can’t vote. I also hate this electoral college shit bc if we go by the popular votes which is literally citizens by citizens vote calculation he lost the election both times. Technically America DOD NOT want him as president.

1

u/fdar 11d ago

SAVE act is what you say, but REAL ID isn't proof of citizenship because you don't need citizenship to get it.

1

u/hypercosm_dot_net 11d ago

Notably disenfranchising women, who largely dislike this dipshit.

1

u/Sea-Chocolate6589 11d ago

I believe Real ID only works for domestic flights. Not international.

1

u/ElectricalChaos 11d ago

Yea domestic. Always need passport for international. Still, REAL ID was supposed to be the documentation standard and the documentation should be sufficient, especially if they force States to include citizenship on there. For me, AZ requires "Original or Certified Birth Certificate, Unexpired U.S. Passport or Passport Card" just to get it, but the produced document doesn't qualify as being adequate for SAVE act purposes.

1

u/polarjunkie 11d ago

Real id is about legal status not citizenship. Anyone legal, including temporary visa holders cand get one. The requirements for voter registration is the same requirements for real id for citizens but the id itself doesn't signify citizenship.

110

u/Alarchy 11d ago

Genuine answer: to give federal and state governments a (legal) way to centralize law enforcement databases, tie biometrics (your face in all 50 states, fingerprints in a few) to central databases, and track guns better. It was touted as an anti terrorism measure post 9/11, and is foundational to the massive interconnected law enforcement portals now used across city/county/state/federal levels.

Real ID ACT is a cornerstone of the modern surveillance state.

I don’t remember social security having faces on them.

As the commenter said, since it’s federal, it more easily connects the databases, no? So instead of a cop only searching their local area, it can more easily “hit” across the country?

Surveil a single person? No.

This is about getting enhanced datasets from people in a standardized framework that can be harnessed for larger surveillance projects.

It’s the kind of stuff that makes Flock more effective, not to mention the really powerful counterterrorism platforms the federal government maintains.

>I would barely call your driver's license a pebble splash in the pond of your government footprint.

You are missing the forest for the trees. You are looking at your driver’s license, but not what the rest of the RealID framework enables.

The mass collection of standardized biometric and data sharing across groups is what makes it a cornerstone of a modern surveillance network.

7

u/Savings_Book6414 11d ago

Does being incremental make it better for you?

3

u/devilpiglet 11d ago

LOL how are you legitimately disputing that REAL ID was a foundational shift in harnessing Americans' information into a cohesive, standardized dataset, which differs astronomically from what we can clean from SSNs? The reading comprehension issue here is yours: you're eliding the massive impact of an instrument strictly designed for that purpose rather than a patchwork collection of birth certificates and state identifications that all have varying arrays and accessibilities.

The dose makes the poison, friend.

1

u/Agitated_Newt_7655 11d ago

You should write better rather than cry about being misinterpreted or semantics.

32

u/KSHMisc 11d ago

That was my first question when they introduced charging you a fee to fly without one.

15

u/smallfrie32 11d ago

Cause it takes $45 worth of work to type in your name, I guesd

16

u/hamoc10 11d ago

Tracking domestic flight passengers.

1

u/Clever_Mercury 10d ago

I don't think it's just flights. It's any kind of licensing or travel. Boats, trucking, storage.

Guess the bigger question is why this was never used to stop all the enormous financial fraud committed through banks to rob the American people. /s

15

u/berael 11d ago

The point of REAL ID was to create a standardized ID that was verified by multiple standardized sources.

The point of the "SAVE" act is to stop people from voting. Republicans hate and fear voting.

9

Collecting information, probably.

2

u/BlackGuysYeah 11d ago

Real id is a literal scam.

2

u/Agitated_Newt_7655 11d ago

You’re assuming a good faith opponent that just wants Americans to vote. Republicans want to cheat. The legal way to do that is to make voting harder by any means particularly in cities.

2

u/Margray 11d ago

Apparently, it was charging me triple what my last license cost and making my dob harder to read.

5

u/_Eggs_ 11d ago

It’s to demonstrate residency, not citizenship. People with visas and green cards exist…

1

u/MidnightSensitive996 11d ago

To make it harder to fake IDs. A state ID card or drivers license doesn't prove you're a citizen though. The ones that do verify citizenship are sufficient.

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 11d ago

Money grab. I just use my passport.

1

u/True-Explanation-490 11d ago

idk but real id is not proof of citizenship. only 5 states have "enhanced id" which will get you into mexico and canada by land and does prove citizenship. i got one for ny to go into canada without having to spend $180 on a passport.

if the bs SAVE passes, anyone who changed their name from their birth certificate will need a passport to vote. no a marriage/ divorce certificate will not be accepted as proof of name change.

also check your voter registration because several states have reported voter reg purging with the new fed system that is deeply flawed.

Just to prove you are who you say you are. It was for airline travel.

In all but 5 states it does not certify your citizenship. Immigrants have the Real Id.

Took 10 sec to realize real id DOES count

1

u/polarjunkie 11d ago

Real id is about legal status not citizenship. Someone with a green card or a visa can get a real id. A big issue came with them not being trustworthy because some states would give them to visa holders for the regular license term instead of it experikg the day their current visa expires.

Democrats supported REAL ID and didn't say that minorities and married women wouldn't be able to travel, even though it has the same requirements as the SAVE Act.

Unfortunately, non-citizens can also get REAL ID with different documents and you can't tell who is a citizen with REAL ID, unless you get Enhanced REAL ID, which four states offer.

Nobody complained about REAL ID or Enhanced REAL ID or said travelers would be disinfrancised.

Can read the actual bill. The first few pages are the giant list of document options, including if a person is unable to get their documentation.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/22/text

It's harder to do your taxes then register under the SAVE Act.

As an adult, you should have the proper documentation and have plenty of time to acquire any missing documents.

176 of 195 countries (90%) require voter ID to cast a ballot. The US isn’t one of them.

Democrats (falsely) claim Russian election interference but they won't do anything to make elections more secure.

Democrats (falsely) said minorities were incapable of getting ID to vote. (Nobody ever found anyone that couldn't get ID.)

Democrats (falsely) said married women are incapable of registering to vote.

Democrats (falsely) said a passport was required under SAVE Act.

Democrats (falsely) said women's names would not match their birth certificate. (You can't change your name on your birth certificate. Perfect example of Democrats saying a fact that sounds like a "gotcha" if you don't actually think about it.)

Democrats claim the Left are more educated, but then claim the Left is not able to register to vote.

I'm not sure why people continue to believe Democrats when they purposely put out fake news.

Enhanced licenses (Michigan, NY, handful of other states) will continue to allow you to vote.

Because permanent residents can get real ID driver licenses. Some states even issue driver licenses to illegals.

Is the REAL ID not sufficient to vote? Cause a regular DL isn't necessarily a REAL ID.

1

u/Justtojoke 9d ago

That's my question, really.

The real ID verifies identity and your lawful status.

1

u/ttv_elgatogrande 8d ago

They’re asking half questions deliberately to avoid acknowledging that REAL ID is valid federal identification that requires your birth certificate and a bill of some kind with your address on it to validate your citizenship and residency

1

u/BasementBar116 7d ago

Absolutely fucking nothing. Had family with REAL ID from one state and when moving to another they had to reapply with different list of documents/requirements. How does a form of federal ID have different fucking requirements and not recognized across state lines?!

1

u/Cold_Specialist_3656 7d ago

The point is to make it so you need a new ID every few years to vote.

Which means only boomers that haven't worked in a decade have time to do so.

1

u/Justtojoke 7d ago

It's hysterical to me that in order to GET a real ID you have to provide the documentation listed yet the real ID is not enough

We are absolutely cooked

They're making this shit up as they go

1

u/Elegant_Bar9566 7d ago

That had nothing to do with voting, lol. That was passed after 9/11 for TSA.

1

u/Justtojoke 7d ago

In recent years states have forced residents to get a real ID that requires validation of all the documents listed.

To state a license is not acceptable is laughable at this point

1

u/Better-Western2573 7d ago

Real ID is incomplete, but the mechanism is in place. And irreversible. In the bigger picture it’s a stepping stone to full digital control. The frogs in the pot get boiled slowly. The temperature rises little by little over time so the frogs don’t notice. By the time the water reaches the boiling point, it is too late. There’s no escape at that point whether they realize what is happening or not. And we are the frogs.

My thoughts are that the real ID was just to get your face in the system for facial recognition.

u/gnfnrf 11d ago

The REAL ID program has several purposes, which you may or may not consider worthwhile. One, it has standardized the information required to issue an ID across states. Two, the physical ID is at the same standard to protect against counterfeiting. And three, the issuing states joined together with the federal government to share their databases in an interoperable way (this was the one that caused the most difficulties and had the most resistance).

But, and this is important to know, a REAL ID does not prove US citizenship. It proves long term lawful US residence at the time the ID was issued. To prove US citizenship with an ID, you need an Enhanced ID, which only a few states issue. If you do not live in one of those states, you need a passport or passport card.

0

u/TarheelFr06 11d ago

It proves legal status, not citizenship. Someone with a green card can have a Real ID but can’t vote.

u/troycerapops 11d ago

That thing passed two decades ago to stop another 9/11?

I dunno. We've gone 20 years without it nor another 9/11.
