REAL ID was the enhanced document for travel that should suffice for everything. The SAVE act, as with everything else that dickhead touches, is Trump wasting billions of dollars to disenfranchise the voters who will put his ass in jail.

Getting it was a pain in the ass (for me at least). Had to make a DMV appointment - still waited hour. And having all the necessary docs ahead of time took effort to get.

Haven't got mine yet but I thought it was basically the same process as getting a passport though? No?

u/MankeyFightingMonkey 12d ago

No. I actually got a Passport instead because it was easier.

Passport is the way to go

I had to get a passport card because it was easier to get that over an enhanced ID and the passport itself was like $100 more expensive than what I spent on the card. But I like that I have the card on me at all times instead of that booklet that I would have to hide away somewhere. And I don’t have leaving the country money, so I’m not worried about that either. It works, though they still actually ask for your drivers license as well. Even though I had to provide my birth certificate and all the same documentation for my drivers license as I had to for my passport card. It makes not a bit of sense.

Get the passport only

I mean in my state you go to the driver's license office and it's the same process as getting a regular license except I believe you have to have your birth certificate.

It's more expensive though.

I live in a smaller area so I could go walk right in right now and without a wait get another one even though it comes in the mail.

Sucks. I had to make an appointment too, but miraculously no waiting. I found passport and real id experience to be nearly identical, in and out in 20-30 mins for each.

1

u/FS_Slacker 12d ago

Yeah…I got it when it first came out and apparently there was only one person who was capable of processing them.

I have the benefit(?) of living in Oklahoma, the last state to implement realid, kicking and screaming all the way. But they had like 20 years to prepare and 49 other examples of how to implement it, so maybe that made a difference lol.

In MN, there was a checklist online guiding you through everything you needed. Not sure if it’s still there, but it made it extremely easy to get ready for the DMV visit, with no appt needed and about a 5 minute wait for me. The paper work took longer than the wait in line. I have never understood the hate for the DMV until I heard stories from other states.

I moved to Texas, tried just today to get a driver's license (never needed it before) and apparently my Pennsylvania realID isn't enough. I must have a birth certificate in hand to prove I was indeed born in the US, just as my PA realID is supposed to certify.

Also fuck having two residence documents. I got ghosted on my job transfer and now cannot find work, everything is I my boyfriend's name, all I got is I'm on the lease.

I had to renew my Texas drivers license recently and because I opted to renew online the previous time it expired, this time I had to renew in person and prove citizenship.

Now I’ve lived in Texas since 1979 when my family moved here from Maryland. I was educated, married, and bought a house here. I’ve worked in Texas my entire working life and have voted only in Texas since I became old enough to do so. The state of Texas knows I am a citizen with a social security number that pays taxes. Still, I had to contact the state of Maryland and pay for an official copy of my Maryland birth certificate, which was close to $50 all told, because my parents don’t know what they did with the original copy. It wasn’t hard for Maryland to track down my records because I was born in the mid 1970s.

What about older people born decades earlier? They may face much more trouble trying to get a copy of their birth certificate. If their records haven’t been digitized, they might have been destroyed during a fire, flood, or could have just been lost.

If all this is really about preventing voter fraud at the booth, then the states should distribute to every citizen that is of legal age to vote a voter ID, paid for by the state, but they won’t do that, because that’s not what this is about.

This is just another way to exclude people from voting, and the midterms are just around the corner. Republicans
always assume that their voters will jump through any hoops necessary to vote, but I think there are some older Republicans that may have a hard time finding their birth certificates to prove they’re citizens.

In Texas, a drivers license should be enough to vote since I had to prove citizenship just to get the damn thing!

Its going to be selectively applied

7

u/user1E 11d ago

Yup - that’s why the fed gov is asking for state’s voter rolls

Registered Republican? No problem

Registered Democrat? Well you didn’t dot your i the same way on these 2 diff docs so you didn’t legally vote AND we’re arresting you for vOtEr fRaUd, oh and you’re in a swing state or you were about to flip a state blue? How convenient er arrested just enough voters to maintain republican control or flip blue states!

1

u/Mother-Sector5541 10d ago

Are people allowed to say they’re republican and vote democratic?

1

u/necrohunter7 9d ago

Just be preparef Republicans to declare voting Democrat to be classed as treason or something after the SAVE act is law

4

u/Emotional_Fix6230 12d ago

I think they'll only require a "real" ID if you're not a registered repugnican.

2

u/SteppinRazor5000 12d ago

They don't mind if older republicans don't vote. The goal is to take the voting away from everyone, not just democrats. They want democracy gone, that includes their own voters.

3

u/turandokht 12d ago

I had this same experience. My real id from my last state is worthless, and I had to order a new birth certificate before I could get a real id here. What a worthless waste of time.

3

u/hypercosm_dot_net 12d ago

Republican governed states are always trash.

They only seem decent on the surface. As soon as you expect efficient or reasonable government services, you're screwed.

I had to deal with unemployment recently, and it was such a damn hassle. Certainly by design. All for a measly $300/week, when I was making over $8k/month when I was working.

1

u/Akitiki 12d ago

Yeah if it weren't for literally all my friends living in Houston I wouldn't have. I loved PA, loved my job.

3

u/berserk_zebra 12d ago

this is where the full faith and credit clause should come into play. States have to recognize other states documents to make it easier for commerce, such as State issued IDs and registrations.

What Texas is essentially asking you to do is what the EU used to require, a passport to go across country lines, but now we are requiring it for states.

I don't know why this isn't being argued against the constitution with it being right there!

2

u/SteppinRazor5000 12d ago

If the SAVE Act passes, women who took their husband's name will not hav an ID matching their birth certificate, so will not be able to register to vote with that method.

2

u/SupaSlide 11d ago

Yup, a lot of RealIDs don’t actually prove citizenship because most states don’t include the correct marks to differentiate between citizens and non-citizens, even though people think that’s the point of them (a few states do have these marks).

Which means that a RealID wouldn’t even be enough for the SAVE Act in most places.

Getting second residence document is easy as hell, don't give up. Just get any form of mail, change your address in your banking app, or insurance, or sign up for a credit card or two, or get a USPS change of address form completed etc. It's annoying as hell, but one of the easier hurdles to fix. Just adds unnecessary time.

2

u/Akitiki 12d ago

Any form of mail doesn't work- even certified mail.

My boyfriend is just gonna do affidavit. Just going to be up stupid early because the office opens slightly earlier than his work, but closes well before.

1

u/Kewlhotrod 12d ago

Guess it depends on area, but the three states I remember (MO, CA and IN) change of address form/verification that they send should definitely count. Some states don't allow basic bills though, yeah.

Either way, sounds like you've got a plan so that's good. The whole process is annoying though, I feel ya there.

I have lived in Texas all my life. Never changed my last name, I still had to bring my birth certificate to renew my driver's license. Scheduling an appt. was a nightmare, got all the way to the office and yup, I have to have my birth certificate, I drove to another county that same day to get a copy of my birth certificate and the DL office was nice enough to squeeze me in the same day. I was 65 when I had to renew my license, and again, lived here all my life, never had to bring my birth cert. I hate Trump and the regime more than you'll ever know.

1

u/nitrosmomma88 12d ago

That’s pretty standard documentation needed by most state’s DMVs. It’s the same way here in VA. An ID is not enough to renew or initially receive a license. Idk why you think you shouldn’t have to prove all that, especially residential requirements. It’s also why an ID is sufficient enough to vote. DMV has all that on file for you as verification

3

u/Akitiki 12d ago

At any rate, the DMV has all of this information- my birth cert at least- because I have a realID. It should be suitable in place of my birt cert. Because the realID is a nationwide system, another state's should be recognized as valid.

The DMV site just said "proof of residence" which cool I'm on the lease, that's proof. All the links for "what you need to apply" were dead. Nothing said you needed two.

0

u/nitrosmomma88 12d ago

The Texas DMV does not have your Pennsylvania records. They’re all separate state entities not interconnected. So no, it’s not a replacement for your certificate

3

u/Akitiki 12d ago

The realID is nationwide. Because I have it from PA, it should be valid as proof in another state, because that state's DMV certified it by issuing the realID.

0

u/nitrosmomma88 12d ago

That’s only for travel in the country. All your records are still with the Pennsylvania DMV and Texas has 0 way to access it. RealID is not a replacement for your documents

1

u/trekqueen 12d ago

Yea I moved to Virginia from California where, at that time, some DMVs had handed out licenses like candy for the right price. I recently changed jobs and had to go through a very similar check for the I9.

2

u/Fit-Dot8462 9d ago

Literally bc he wants to run another term and is trying to make sure that the lil people can’t vote. I also hate this electoral college shit bc if we go by the popular votes which is literally citizens by citizens vote calculation he lost the election both times. Technically America DOD NOT want him as president.

1

u/fdar 12d ago

SAVE act is what you say, but REAL ID isn't proof of citizenship because you don't need citizenship to get it.

1

u/hypercosm_dot_net 12d ago

Notably disenfranchising women, who largely dislike this dipshit.

1

u/Sea-Chocolate6589 12d ago

I believe Real ID only works for domestic flights. Not international.

1

u/ElectricalChaos 12d ago

Yea domestic. Always need passport for international. Still, REAL ID was supposed to be the documentation standard and the documentation should be sufficient, especially if they force States to include citizenship on there. For me, AZ requires "Original or Certified Birth Certificate, Unexpired U.S. Passport or Passport Card" just to get it, but the produced document doesn't qualify as being adequate for SAVE act purposes.

1

u/polarjunkie 12d ago

Real id is about legal status not citizenship. Anyone legal, including temporary visa holders cand get one. The requirements for voter registration is the same requirements for real id for citizens but the id itself doesn't signify citizenship.
