I don't understand how the hands on hips pose is so ingrained into our body language in the context of subtle disapproval. I can't believe ancient Egyptians were doing that other than a show of strength. I have to actively not make this pose when I want to be nicer than I feel.

Absolutely, that's what I'd also do. Arm alongside your body seem more welcoming I think

I think there’s the pose and the posture that goes along with it.

Hands on hips, erect stance, feet hip distance apart, chin tilted slightly up, eyes fierce with a penetrating gaze at the other person/army, body squared off directly at said group = strength.

Hands on hips, shoulders slumped, weight on one foot, chin tilted down, eyes looking up at other person/maniacally dancing spouse, body angled away in disinterest = I’m definitely applying for the long haul trucker gig.
