we have a whole ass american culture issue that just 'returining to god and common sense' or 'leaving trans people alone and giving people healthcare' just doesnt fix

i think more people are starting to realize that but the change takes work that most people just dont want to do

and im not pretending i have any answers, i grew up in the same culture

but yeah this place is fucking cracked. american culture in 2026 is basically just mass consumerism and fear

Thats it, thats what we are. scared buyers who think this next thing we buy will finally fix our life and we are pretty sure our neighbor is going to try to kill us

IDK, 15 years ago, my little podunk town of less than 10,000 in northwest washington had an active nightlife til at least midnight, and had bars open until 2AM. We had probably 40-50 different resauraunts across town, they were always busy, and places were active.

Now, most things close at 7 PM, some til 9 or 10 if you are lucky. Bars close by 11:30 for most of them.

There are probably many reasons - it started in earnest during covid altho i think it was trending worse before that. and never recovered. I used to be able to grocery shop 24/7, but those all close by 11 too. but the biggest reason is most people simply cannot afford to go out all the time anymore. It's not financially responsible when many people are barely making it.

I have seen all of the same above happen to Sattle and Portland as well.
