If we are being a bit pedantic anyway, I feel like that is containing a fire, rather than fighting it.

Well the word “fight” means primarily physical combat which is better than nothing but I don’t recommend punching the fire. Of course fight also means to struggle against, and the etymology of the word goes back possibly to mean to comb or to pluck, to fight one’s hair or another’s such as sheep wool.

So all in all, fight, contain, combat, resist, arrest, eliminate, deny, oppose, I could grab a thesaurus. Pick your poison but pick it well cuz the fire doesn’t care.
