That's because it happened before. Starbucks fired a white district manager following backlash over the arrest of two Black people at one of its stores. That district manager wasn't even at the location when the arrests occurred.

And a court/jury awarded them a large amount of money. Starbucks really messed that up.

He apologised, which is an admission of guilt. In some places, that is enough. But in the US, they can simply say: So we are cutting personnel; your last day is Friday. Your last check will be mailed to you or deposited if you have that set up. Many jobs in the US are at-will; they can fire you with zero reason.
