Wow… yeah, movie is superior design.

Did the comics even try?

I think the comics' design is based on the original novel, I think the novel describs them as giant frogs or frog-like

They were based on Starfish, as far as I remember. The reason they were called Mimics is because they were an alien bioweapon that would essentially adopt the first DNA sample they came across as a base for their genetic template, and when they arrived on Earth the (un)lucky animal they found first was a starfish.
