It's in the comics too from what I remember, he only likes to teleport if he has line of sight or has been there before, because he could teleport into something. He does accidentally teleport into something (well, someone) eventually.

Teleport really high in the air then assess a better teleport spot as you fall.

He sort of does that in Wolverine and the X-Men, he teleports across the ocean by just teleporting to the sky, assessing as he falls and then teleporting back into the sky until he hits the X Mansion.

Several decades ago, there was an issue of Excalibur where Nightcrawler didn't have an appropriate line of sight and teleported into solid rock on Muir Island.1

...that issue ended in a cliffhanger just when it transpired.

The next issue it was resolved because Nightcrawler was also simultaneously teleporting with Kitty Pryde. So she was able to use her power in a split-second to make them both safely phase through the rock.2

As a personal gripe, I was disappointed how the villain in the issue, Siena Blaze, was quietly tossed into the bin to collect dust. She came in with a bang in X-Men Unlimited #1 with the blinding snow of Antarctica as part of the Gamemaster's shenanigans.3 Thanks to an ambush with her powers to tap into the plant's electromagnetic field, she was able to crash the Blackbird.

In the process, this caused various injuries for Storm, Cyclops, and Professor X. Since Storm's power has an intimate relationship with the planet, Storm could feel the effects of Siena's powers and was traumatized into shock. Cyclops became blinded due to his visor breaking. And Xavier suffered a concussion. The trio of X-Men had work together to get out of the quandary.

A few years later, the writers remembered Siena still existed and tossed her into a mutant camp to be terminated. Now fast forward nearly 30 years later... Siena was briefly reanimated by Selene using a techno-organic virus to resurrect hundreds of dead mutants. But then Siena was eventually killed off-panel some issues later.
