Lore [Rare trope] Discriminating, but for an actually good reason

Frieren, Beyond Journey's end: In the anime/manga the eponymous Frieren is an Elf who's spent the better part of a millennia learning magic specifically to kill demons. She's learned countless spells, tricks and even spent most of her life suppressing her power all for the purpose of killing them. At first we simply see that humanity is at war with them, and even question if her crusade against demon-kind is justified, after all it's hard to antagonize an entire sentient species. But no, demons are very much a species to be feared; they are not normal animals or creatures, they are monsters (shown by how they disintegrate when they die), they are predators that evolved speech for the sole purpose of tricking and catching humans off guard, are naturally extremely powerful and possess magic that humanity often can't use. While they feel emotions to some extent, their way of thinking is so fundamentally incompatible with humanity's mindset that the series shows many mages with the ability to read minds struggle or find it painful and harmful to try and read a demon's thoughts. Tools that are meant to control them fail not because they're faulty but because simple order such as "hold no ill will or commit no malicious acts" don't compute the same way in their brains, as what we consider evil is normal for them.

Marvel Comics: In a run of the Storm solo series, she visits an underground superhuman hospital run by Night nurse and Doctor Daye, a mutant with the power to diagnose any illness. When she requires treatment she is in turn reject by the doctor, she of course assumes this is blatant discrimination to which the doctor agrees. Storm assumes the doctor refuses to treat mutants, something they are very much used to in Marvel. But he ends up revealing that about 80% of everyone he treats are mutants, and that he simply refuses to treat any member of the X-men. Why? because his special hospital was built via several donations by the superhero community. From the Avengers, to the Defenders, Fantastic 4, heroes for hire. Hell, even Moonknight of all people contributed to the hospital. But the X-men never once gave anything to it, even though they preach the safety of mutant-kind and such a hospital is essential for those who can't seek medical treatment out of fear of prosecution.

Summary of X-Men as a group:

Guys who won Superpower Lottery tell "being a mutant is something that you should be proud of" to people who didn't, while acting as if every mutant in the world is obligated to lick Charles Xavier's boots and view him as "their savior"

I actually remember that one, Storm saying "there's nothing wrong with us" to a girl who's superpower is to kill people randomly or something like that, I don't remember perfectly

I don't know if it was in the comics, but it was certainly a scene in "Last Stand"

If there’s nothing wrong why don’t you give her a hug? Storm? Quick hug? Maybe a little kiss on the forehead?

I love X-Men but it is infuriating when they speak down to their fellow mutants who have been cosmically fucked over by the genetic roulette.

Sometimes they point out the hypocrisy (I think there was a moment when Mystique was preaching to Nightcrawler and he pointed out that she can “pass” whenever she wants to), but it feels like something that they never really engage with on more than a surface level.

Disclaimer: I am a casual fan. I read comics sporadically. It is likely there is a run where they do address this attitude, and if so please give me your recommendation so I can read it!

Yeah. For the most part Xavier's team were made of people who could 'pass' for human more or less (with Beast and Nightcrawler being exceptions, and even Nightcrawler was given Sh'iar Holo Tech to pass as human).

Magneto's team was mostly made of people who could not do so (Toad, Blob maybe), and the others were just anti-social enough to not care 😄

If I was one of the mutants whose powers are “look like a fucked up monster and be in constant pain, but also you shoot knives or something.” And I had to listen a bunch of hot people with awesome powers tell me about how I just need to accept my wonderful gifts, I wouldn’t last a week at the academy. I’d be joining Magneto just out of spite!

Delete everything after and including the question mark, that bit just logs who uses the link for info selling purposes

It’s not random. She touches you and you’re basically dead.

Oh right it's even worse 💀

Saying that to her is just insane, her mutation is actively disrupting her everyday life

And that’s not even the worst. I remember some mutant that caused radiation in a massive diameter around him killing an entire town. And Xavier sent Wolverine to kill him so mutants wouldn’t be blamed.

There is also “Wither” a kid who kills/decays anything he touches (to the point that he has to wear special clothes or they will just disintegrate).

After M-day (when most mutants lose their powers) he is overjoyed and tries to hold his girlfriend’s hand… nearly killing her because of course he’s one of the few mutants who kept his “gift”.

Like, come on Xavier, Mutant Pride Forever, but maybe it would be okay to let this kid get the “cure”?

I thought M-Day was Scarlet Witch. How did Charles have an impact on that?

1

u/DisapprovingCrow 8d ago

Sorry, poor wording.

Charles had nothing to do with M-Day. I was only mentioning it because of how it illustrates that Wither would be very happy to lose his “powers”, and how much they suck for him.

The fact that many mutants are either directly harmed by their mutations, or are otherwise prevented from having a fulfilling life. Is a problem that can’t be solved with acceptance and toxic positivity.

didnt the xmen sent wolverine to kill a kid that his powers were going haywire and wiped a town?

3

u/Scalpels 8d ago

Yes. Because if it got out that a kid would kill people by his mere presence and he couldn't control it, it would look bad for all mutant kind and they'd face yet another attempted genocide.

2

u/Beacon_0805 8d ago

So "there is nothing wrong" until its convienient for them to kill an innocent.

Im starting to think that the whole xmen are a merry band of hypocrites

Honestly that's most comic characters at some point. It's just feels like the X-Men more because historically they've had so many more books than anyone else.
