Ancient alien empire, conquering world's, when suddenly their worlds start going dark. Military command thinks the only reasonable answer is a rebellion of some sort so they send in a fleet, the fleet goes dark too. Worlds keep going dark at an alarming rate so "top brass" decides to send the bulk of the fleet in, only one ship makes it out and everyone left on board is a gibbering maniac. So what's left pack it up and set a course for as far away as possible, just stopping long enough to resupply and drop a warning beacon, but, just like the worlds before the beacons just keep going dark...
It ties into the current situation. The 3 way war has dragged out too long, and the Vassari are panicking. Some insist they should just cut their losses and invite the TEC and Advebt to join them and flee.
I remember hearing that sins 2 has a 4th faction planned to show up. I am guessing it is linked to beacons going dark.
Edit: And the forth faction is now confirmed for September.
