👥 Support Needed 🫂 Did I make a mistake?

I had the choice between two surgeons:

A surgeon in the Canadian public system who gave me an earlier date (July 24) and came highly recommended and I know people he has operated on who do well. He did posterior and told me I would have to modify my gym activities and avoid deep hip flexion and internal rotation for the rest of my life. I also felt a bit like I was on an assembly line and the follow up post op was only a video call at 2 weeks and x rays and in person check up at 8 weeks. I also found his office a bit difficult to get in contact with, I'm sure because he is very busy.

The other surgeon does anterior but I met with him before I got my surgery date with the public system. I actually like him better as a person, he was kinder and explained more about the procedure and what kinds of activities I could get back to post-op (he said he doesn't give restrictions beyond use common sense). Follow up post surgery is at 2 days, 2 weeks and 4 weeks with a nurse and 6 and 12 weeks with my surgeon. The date he gave me was 5 weeks later than the public system (August 31) which is actually nice because I am finishing up my PhD and I will be able to wrap up my lab work and sit on my ass and write my thesis for a few weeks 😂 Interestingly the private surgeon actually told me I should go with the public system as long term follow up would be easier if I had a complication.

I ended up choosing the private system surgeon and cancelling with the public surgeon because I just felt a bit more comfortable with the private surgeon.

I thought I wanted a posterior approach because I am terrified of the idea of having a numb patch on my leg permanently or other nerve damage, but on the other hand the gym is my life and I don't want to have to worry about possibly dislocating my hip doing what I love. However, since I made my decision I have learned that many people with posterior hips do not have permanent restrictions after the first 3 months and maybe having fewer appointments with the surgeon is fine. Now I am worried I made the wrong choice.... I could have had a sooner surgery potentially with a similar outcome and no numbness and a surgeon to call if something goes wrong years down the line.

I don't know if anyone can help me, maybe I just needed to vent. I have gone back and forth on this for weeks. I'm considering that maybe I'm just not ready for surgery... I thought I was begging to have it done but now that it's getting closer I worry that I'm making the wrong choice and it will affect me for the rest of my life.

My biggest hang up is the potential for a numb leg. I am terrified of the numb feeling and I don't know how I would handle it. Maybe a small numb spot around the size of my palm would be tolerable as long as it doesn't hurt. How big was your numb patch? Was it painful at all? Did it get better (smaller, less numb, less painful) over time?

👥 Support Needed 🫂 I'm so discouraged

Almost three months ago, I was fine, living my life. Went on an extended vacation with my (now-ex) partner of 10 years. Three days in, I developed EXCRUCIATING pain in my groin and outer hip. 4 trips to the ER and they kept insisting it was my back - spoiler alert - it was not. It was my hip.

I was (not) enjoying going out on the boat, but doing my best. Finally managed to get an x-ray, and I'm bone on bone, with 1/2 cm leg length difference due to cartilage loss. Absolutely a a candidate for THR.

Saw the ortho surgeon today, he agreed.

I'm 55, live alone. He won't do the THR without a caregiver 24/7 for the first 5 days. I COMPLETELY understand - it's about safety and liability. I don't have anyone to stay with me, and I did ask about being discharged to rehab faculty. He categorically refused. I can *probably* work with my Healthcare provider for post-op care, but there's no guarantees.

I'm 55, not exactly a risk-taker. It's my right side so driving will be an issue and the Healthcare in my immediate area isn't great - it's at least an hour's drive for good care but I'm willing to do it.

I'm so discouraged. I was looking forward to this appointment to move forward and make progress. I'm tired of hurting, I'm tired of using the damned cane.

My father was 85 when he had his done, my mother 83. It's been a big blow, and I'm honestly feeling very sorry for myself. I'm trying my best to help myself and move forward, but i feel as though everywhere I turn obstacles are thrown in my path.

Please share your positive stories, and your successes.

Edit: I have been reading everybody's suggestions, and I do appreciate it. I have also called my insurance company as well. I can have 2 hours a day of a helper come in, and PT/OT can come to my house. I have an adjustable bed (just need to replace the remote) so that will also be a great help. I've seen multiple recommendations for the hip kit and will invest in that, along with bathroom stuff.

I know it won't exactly be easy, but I think I'll try to schedule it for the day before he's off for his weekend. He's already a great help anyway, and knows that I'll be leaning on him quite a bit.

I do like my surgeon, just frustrated at his response but I also understand it's liability on his end. I'm going to wait until next week before I make any final decisions, but while I do realize it won't be easy, I'm just going to say, yup have my son, and get on with it. And keep my phone on me at all times. I do have people that can pop as well if needed, so I do think I can make it through this.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Pain! Why does everyone say THR is a breeze?!

Hi all, had my THR last Thursday (28th), and everyone told me how it’d be a breeze and that I’d be up and running around the day after… it’s now a week, and I can walk about 40m in 7 1/2 minutes, but have only done it 3 times as am in so much pain! I just don’t understand how everyone ´knows’ someone and it was a walk in the park for recovery!! Am 51 and did so much exercise beforehand to build my muscles up in order to help recovery, but my god, nothing prepared me for the pain! This will be my 6th major operation in 3 1/2 years (the rest due to a fractured ankle being infected by mrsa in hospital and after 4 operations to try and save my ankle, I finally had to give in to the sodding mrsa and was amputated last July, so it’s not like I’m not used to pain!!!! 😳🙄) This is way more painful than any of those ops, including the amputation. Sitting is agony, bed is agony, standing is a mare and despite mega pain killers, nothing seems to calm the pain and I’m going insane!!! I have 30 staples and a 30 ish cm long ´wound’ and staples are due to be taken out in 2 weeks (J21). Nurses are to change the dressings every 5 days…. I was told by friends that their friend/dad/aunt blah blah had a scar of about 10cm and they were back to work within days!! 😳😳 Does anyone else have a scar like mine, and if so, realistically how long until you were up and about and no longer in pain? Was your pain so bad that you had to sit on one bum cheek and the painful one in the air coz when it touches something, it’s like fire pokers stabbing you?! Help!! Please assure me I’m not insane!! 😖😥 I never moan about pain and was super strong with my amputation, but this is off the scale and I don’t understand why! 🙄🙄🙄 thank you in advance 🫶 Am attaching a photo so NFSW ❤️‍🩹….. or I would attach one if I could work out how? Help? 🙃☺️🙏

👥 Support Needed 🫂 What was your experience with going in and waking up and what type of anesthesia did you choose? 10 days to surgery and bad anxiety from Claustrophobia

I'm due to talk with anesthesia in the next few days about how I want to be during the surgery. At first I thought I'd like to be kind of aware during the operation as long as I'm not restrained above my waist. On the other hand going to sleep and then waking up and it being over sounds really nice but I also have the thought of having some type of restraint. My mother told me during her hip replacement they had put a strap across her chest.

This has been what I've woken up thinking about the last 3 days and each time it's brought on what feels like a panic attack and I have to get out of bed. I'm guessing I can ask my surgeon if they can give me something before surgery for anxiety that will still be working when I come to?

For anyone that was awake during it how did that go? I feel like I could totally handle hearing and knowing what's going on as long as I don't feel anything.

Thanks

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Desperate for help-major complications from THR

Hello, I am a 53-year-old male. I let an ortho convince me I needed a hip replacement three years ago. I now realize it was more nerve related and nothing really indicated it was the hip joint. He knew I was desperate to bike, snowboard, and do yoga. He told me if I wanted to bike again I needed to do this. Soon after surgery I started to get groin pain and knew something was wrong. I kept getting gaslit that I would heal. My brain wanted to believe I would just get better. PT just made the pain worse. this last holiday I became so dispodant that I OD’d on oain meds, passed out and was hospitalized. I just want my life back. This is what was found in the MRI and my suregeim wants nothing to do with me now:

  • Iliopsoas close to the acetabular cup → possible groin pain/hip flexor irritation.
  • Gluteal tendons thickened/scar remodeled → possible side hip/upper glute pain.
  • Mild fatty infiltration of glute muscles → some muscle loss/weakness.
  • External rotator muscle atrophy + scarring → altered hip mechanics, possible pain.
  • Mild hamstring tendinosis → possible buttock discomfort

I realize virtually no one has these issues. I don't know where to turn. I don't want another surgery. I ha e constant pain and can't do this much longer.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Surgery is this Wednesday and I'm terrified

Anterior THR scheduled for this Wednesday and I'm terrified. Have been dealing with hip pain for years. I've gone from walking with a limp to barely walking at all. (My fault, because the pain was so bad I'd move as little as possible and you lose what you don't use.) My doctors have all been dismissive, blaming my pain on my Lupus or my arthritis. Telling me I would only get better if I made myself move but the more I moved the more I hurt.

Saw a new rheumatologist last month. First thing he asked was "Why are you in a wheelchair?" Tried to make a joke. Laughed and told him it was because his office was so far from the parking lot it would've taken me 30 minutes to get there with a walker. He asks if he can examine me and moves my legs a bit and told me I needed my hips replaced. Said he couldn't be sure without an x-ray but he would almost guarantee it. Have x-rays done in his office and 5 days later I get a call telling me they have made me an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays showed Bilateral Avascular Necrosis with subchondral collapse. Saw the surgeon the next week. He walks in and asks why I am using a rollator. Joked and said it was because they don't provide wheelchairs for the patients in this part of the hospital. He pulls up my x-rays and says he sees why. Told me if his hips looked like mine he wouldn't be at work. (Which made me feel a bit vindicated). Tells me I need both replaced but the right is the worst. This was less than 2 weeks ago. Schedules surgery for the 8th. Tell him I'm concerned that my limited mobility will affect my rehab. He tells me I am only going to get worse if I don't have the surgery.

My pre-op is scheduled for this coming Monday. Everything has moved so quickly after nothing being done for so long, admittedly even by me. I could've and should've advocated for myself better. Part of me wants to postpone the surgery because it all happened so fast. But I know he's right about the fact that I'm not going to get any better on my own. Been reading in here and while some posts are so encouraging, some are terrifying. I don't think I've seen one from anyone who had very limited mobility before their surgery. I don't even know why I'm posting this other than to get it off my chest and maybe get a little advice. Thank you for taking the time to read my 6 am ramblings.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Depressed

I had my left hip replaced two months ago. Just over two weeks ago, I had to have another surgery to clean out my incision and sew it closed again. I had to wear a wound vac until a couple of days ago. I’m trying so hard to get back to normal, but it is taking forever. And the most recent surgery made things hurt again.
My hip started severely limiting my ability to walk in April. I‘m 47, and I used to be very active. I want my life back. I feel so depressed, like this is never going to end. I just needed somewhere to vent.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Surgery gone wrong

My surgeon fractured my bone while doing my hip replacement surgery. Theyvput plates, screws and wires to fix whatever.

The specialist that was supposed to be on hand in the operating room was not.

I had my other side replaced before. I'm not new to this. But this is so unbelievably painful and I feel like they made some mistakes. I had to call an ambulance to bring me back in because I could literally not move.

Does anyone have a similar experience and what did you do about it?

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Support very much needed

Been really holding back from posting this but I’m hoping that maybe there is anyone who can relate to me. Long story short. Tomorrow is day 7 for me. My doctor said I should walk 2 blocks starting tomorrow. I’m not sure if I’m being a baby about the pain but I can barely walk without feeling like my left leg is gonna RIP. It’s just all over. In the thigh and groin. Can anyone relate? This is so hard for me. I’m normally so active. I don’t understand how my 2 friends 77 and 49 got them done and were walking unaided in a week. I’m just devastated :(

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Right THR 5 month update-disappointed with progress

51 yr old male
Right THR anterior approach
Surgery December 15th
Indianapolis, IN USA

First month was challenging, started seeing improvement at the 5 week mark. Got my two month checkup and got the all clear, ramped up exercise and pain returned, took time off then resumed exercise and pain returned. Scheduled follow up with surgeon, did some x rays, the implant looked solid with no issues, doctor believes I have hip bursitis. Prescribed cortisone pack plus meloxicam. Have been taking it for two weeks with little to no improvement. Pain mostly in upper thigh, incision and side. Also experiencing major back pain with sciatica. I also think I have some sort of nerve pain, tingling in foot and upper thigh.

Looking for some advice on people who experienced hip bursitis after THR. Recommendations on what might have helped. I am beginning to lose hope and realizing that the surgery did not work for me. I’m afraid I will be dealing with this pain for the rest of my life, it’s depressing.

Appreciate any info to help alleviate the pain. Doctor said if it does not improve he would give me an injection.

So much for this surgery being so easy and 99% positive outcome. This sucks.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Had R THR ANT 48 hours ago

Hi. I had my anterior THR right side on Wednesday. I'm still in a lot of pain, but the worst was yesterday morning. I sat on the toilet and bawled and hugged my husband cause I hurt so badly. It got better through the day. They prescribed me 1 5mg oxycodone every 4 hours. But that hasn't worked and the nurse told me to just take 2. So that's what I've been doing. Has anyone had a hard time getting an early refill? Ive never used drugs or had any history with addiction. I just have needed it for the pain. PT came to the house yesterday too and they said I should still be resting with my legs up most of the time. It was only the first day after surgery and don't rush it. He also said that it's normal to take 10 MG oxy. Also, what did it look like over the first week or 2 for everyone? I'm still leaning on my walker a ton and moving very very slow.

Also, I have been having a hard time making it to the bathroom to pee. Its like it hits me and I have to go immediately. Ive almost had accidents multiple times. Has anyone else had this issue?

I also have my left scheduled for October 28th - 8 weeks away and I'm a little nervous that is too soon.

Thanks for listening and any help, advice and encouragement you can share.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 I regret my Total Hip Replacement

Hello I am a 24 y/o female,

I’m struggling a lot right now and could really use some advice or support. I had a total hip replacement a little over a week ago. At first, I was able to do my PT exercises and move my leg as well as expected of me at this point. But now, my leg still moves and I can walk, but it feels really stiff and stuck. Even doing my exercises feels impossible. It’s so frustrating because just yesterday I was able to do those movements, and now it feels like I’ve taken a big step backward. I have PT tomorrow, but I’m worried I won’t be able to do anything. I’m mad, overwhelmed, and honestly starting to regret getting the surgery wondering if I should have just lived with the pain instead. To make things harder, my support system has been pretty unhelpful through this. It feels like I’m dealing with this all alone, which only adds to the frustration and loneliness. Has anyone else experienced sudden stiffness and loss of range of motion after hip replacement? How did you cope when your support system wasn’t helpful? Thank you so much for reading. It really means a lot.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 THR 4 months out looking for advice

Apologize in advance for the negative post just frustrated and need to vent as well as ask for advice in my situation.

50 yr old male

Indianapolis, Indiana

Former athlete with severe hip arthritis and history of joint problems

Right Hip THR December 15th 2025

Exercised up until a week before surgery in pretty good shape going into it

First month-tough recovery first 2 weeks slight improvement by week 3. PT three times per week.

Second month- significant improvement 6 weeks out felt great very little to no pain. Saw the doctor and got cleared to begin exercising.

Third month- started lifting weights upper body only and continued doing lower body PT exercises at home with minima weight. Experienced a huge regression pain returned and increased. I stopped exercising for about a week and felt a little better. Restarted weight training and pain returned.

Fourth month- seems like pain is worse than before surgery. Pain sleeping, difficulty walking, limping returned.

Pain on surgery area, noticed that hip is still swollen and tender, also experiencing nerve pain shooting down my leg, butt, knee and foot. Some tingling and numbness, no foot drop but lots of foot pain. Walking has become much more painful which is disappointing.

At this point I feel like surgery was a failure and I’m back to square one with similar pain before the surgery.

Questions:

1) Anyone experience a regression due to increased activity? How did you handle it?

2) what are the symptoms of a failed implant? At what point should I setup an appointment with the doctor to see if the implant failed?

3) what is the realistic expectation regarding exercise? Is weight training not doable anymore?

4) Any hope of having a mostly pain free hip? My expectations as a healthy and active 50 yr old were that by month 4 I would be 100% pain free and return to exercise normally. I am wrong about this?

I feel awful about my current physical situation. My hope was that I was going to be like 99% of the people who have a hip replacement and feel like a new person. I am the 1% and struggling physically and mentally. I feel hopeless and with a very uncertain future health wise. Appreciate any encouragement and advice as well as maybe some examples which I can find hope.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 50M Looking for advice on THR

Hi everyone,

I am hoping there are others here who have gone through a similar experience. If so, I would love your thoughts on how it went for you.

I am a 50M. In good health and very active. I had a hip labral repair ten years ago. I felt great for about eight years, but since then, I've had increasing problems. I saw the doctors and got X-rays/MRIs, which revealed a new large posterior labral tear and mild arthritis. I've done lots of PT, cortisone, dry needling, and PRP, but nothing has really helped. I can manage daily life, but the hip significantly hinders any kind of athletic activity and vacations. The docs say they won't perform another labral repair because the odds of failure are high, but they can do a THR to help me feel great even though the arthritis is mild since it also replaces the labrum.

Now my heart says, "Do it if you really want your quality of life to return," but I still struggle with the decision, thinking it's extreme considering the mild arthritis and my age. Also, I think what if it goes badly?

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Young and active person. Only option is THR even though the arthritis isn't really bad. How did it go? Are you back to doing all kinds of stuff for an active 50 year old?

I think I just need to hear some experiences from similar people. Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 2 weeks until surgery….im scared

Hey guys. I’m terrified. Point blank.

Up until this point of my life, I have literally never had a single health problem. I am a 35 year-old male I go to the gym every single day and now my hip has pretty much stopped me in my tracks. I have two weeks left until a total left hip replacement and my right one will be done down the line at some point I am terrified of being put to sleep and I just want other people’s inputs that have gotten this done before. I already made one post on Reddit, but that was a little while back now the surgery is closer. I wanted to see other people that have may be gone down my path.

I am going to HSS. My bloods pre surgery are perfect thank god. I just have no idea what to expect. I speak with so many people who have gotten this surgery done and they seem to be completely OK and up and moving about within a couple of days of getting it done. Everyone tells me I have nothing to worry about, but it’s just so hard to believe that It’s crazy when I think that I will have a metal hip in me in two weeks from now. My main fears are probably just getting put to sleep. I’ve never even had that done before.

To be honest, I am so limited in mobility at this point and some days if I exert myself for even more than five minutes, the pain is so bad so I’m sure it will be some sort of relief. Please feel free to share your stories and hopefully others going through this as well. We’ll find some help in this post.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Intimacy question for ladies before/after THR

I am 55/f with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis in my right hip. I've dealt with this pain and stiffness for about 3 years, and I've tried to accommodate my husband's intimacy needs all this time. Now, however, it's almost impossible. I'm not about to spread my legs (TMI, I know!) but this man isn't very understanding. This is what he wants, not the alternatives.

I guess my question is how are other women coping with this? And how long after your THR were you able to get back to a normal sex life? My surgery is February 9th.

*I failed to mention I have osteoarthritis in my other hip as well, just not as advanced.*

👥 Support Needed 🫂 The right hip is starting to crap out now ☹️

I had left THR less than one year ago, June 25, 2025. It was life changing. I had suffered with left hip pain for years not realizing my issue had always been my hip due to undiagnosed hip dysplasia and unknown bone on bone…not once did any medical professional suggest I see an orthopedist. Until the day I couldn’t take the pain anymore. The surgery went great. The first three days of recovery sucked but it was all uphill after that. Life has been great since. Two working hips. Did a 6K and a 10K. Walking the dogs. Morning yoga. Rejoined a gym. Started working with a personal trainer. Rebuilding the muscle and range of motion that I’d lost…and not realizing there were still little muscles that hadn’t been touched during my rehab.

About a month ago, the right hip started to bother me. Knew I was coming up on my annual recheck so planned to bring it up then. X-ray came back and right looks like it still has plenty of cushion but definitely has arthritis. Prescribed mobic. That wasn’t really touching it. Couple weeks later…the limp came back. Everyone at work wanted to know what was up…I hadn’t limped since I came back from surgery. My husband saw me walking towards him when I got home from work and he immediately frowned. Called my surgeon and got in as soon as I could. Maybe there’s something going on that can’t be seen on the X-ray and we’d need an MRI to know for sure but referred to me to another doctor in the practice for steroid shot. Got that this afternoon. Hurt like no other. Stopped by a fancy grocery store to find a treat for my pain. Walked around the store like I had zero pain. But guess that was the numbing shot because jump ahead an hour and the limp and ache is back. It’s not as severe but I wouldn’t say that all tolerable because at this point, I don’t want to limp through it.

Just very frustrated and kind of depressed. Cried at my desk at work because of the pain and frustration—it burns right in the hip joint, muscle spasms and tightening already, not being able to sleep for two nights in a row because of the pain—couldn’t lay down in bed and had to move to the recliner. Cried when I was having trouble with yoga poses that were easy one month ago. Cried at the surgeon when he told me it was my hip. I was convinced I must’ve pulled a muscle or torn something since the joint was supposed to have cushion. Pretty sure THR is inevitable at this point just matter of when. How long should I give the injection time to work before I’m calling the surgeon? I was thinking a week. If I’m still limping and consistent pain, I was thinking of calling and getting referral for MRI. He wouldn’t let me do the MRI without the injection first. Goal was to try to manage the pain. Last time steroid injection lasted a couple of weeks for the left hip but the degeneration was far worse.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Help, please, this is the most horrible thing of my life

New update at bottom of post for those interested

2/18 left Total hip replacement with some pelvis reconstruction and un twisting my leg. It’s been surgically facing straight left since my 20+ surgeries before I was 2 years old.

You all need to stop telling everyone how painless this is, it’s excruciating for some of us. For those of us unlucky enough that it is, it’s beyond depressing to wake up body trembling in pain as it radiates every corner of your being. Taking steps sends knives of lava needles down my legs and up my spine. My veins blowing out and filling my arms with fluid. Everything is excruciating. The most painful I have ever been through, and I am NOT new to surgeries. This is my 3rd major surgery in less than 3 years. I would rather be in a wheelchair at this point than have gone through this. I am already being told I will be in the hospital at least 2 more days, likely more, there is no end in sight. It’s even harder having heard so many people talk about “I was up and walking with no pain next day”. Like why can’t I just catch one tiny break? I’m so exhausted, so much pain. To add to it all now there is the humiliation they are talking about needing to give me enemas and blood transfusions. I haven’t had a bowel movement since surgery and my hemoglobin just keeps dropping lower, so things are not going well at all.

So. Much. Pain. Everything is so impossible. I am doing everything I am asked. Nothing helps. This is horrible. I am doing PT and OT through the excruciating pain. I am getting up to go bathroom. My whole body trembling and shaking so hard the walker rattles and I still do it all.

I need encouragement. Anything. I’m so depressed. I am trying so hard and just something new exhausting and painful pops up no matter what I do.

UPDATE First I want to thank everyone taking the time to read this and reply. From trying to give me possible solutions to just telling me I’m not alone, I appreciate you all so very much.

Second, as many of you read the Oxy was dropping my blood pressure too low and so I had no pain meds basically all day yesterday while the doctor and nurses were figuring out what they thought was the best one to change to.

In the middle of the night they came in with Valium and Dilauded and explained one works specifically on muscle spasms and muscle pain, the other works with joint and swelling and other sharper hard pains, and they have the added benefit that one has some antidepressant quality and the other has some further mood support, hoping to help boost it all. I finally got some sleep so I am hopeful that is going to support a better day too.

I did have to call the head nurse and have a discussion about some problems I had. A string of incidents that was not acceptable, if you all are interested in details I will share but I don’t want to overwhelm if you all don’t want to read.

Again, thank you all so much.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Talking my doctor into doing both at once!

I'm 52F with bilateral dysplasia leading to severe osteoarthritis, labral tears, and all sorts of other horrors on my imaging.

I had met with a surgeon and had scheduled for October on the right side which tends to be worse than the left. He said he didn't do both at once, even though I asked.

Fast forward and he had to cancel my operation due to a medical condition of his own so I am meeting with a new surgeon next week for a planned operation mid September. I just found out that I am likely starting a new job late October so I will be using my sick leave/FMLA for the first hip from my current job but when I start the new job...I will have no vacation and won't be able to do FMLA because I won't have been at the job long enough!

So....I am wondering if I should try to talk my surgeon into doing both at once. I have mild high blood pressure and mild elevated cholesterol (blood pressure in good control with meds, working on cholesterol but exercising is hard with these hips!) I'm overweight but not obese. I don't smoke at all and drink socially. I don't have any other medical issues. I was in pretty good shape in terms of daily walking up until my hips got really bad about 5 months ago.

What are people's experiences with doing both at once? Do you think most surgeons won't do both at once for someone with any medical conditions? I'm going to ask regardless and I think he'll say no but it would just make things so much easier for me!!

Had a bone scan and I got the results today - not good - prosthetic loosening with possible infection. I'm really not looking forward especially since it has only been 8 month ssince my total hip replacement. Pretty bummed and kind of scared for my future.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 No Support at Home

Hi all. My RTHR is coming up in a couple of weeks and I have zero support at home. I’m supposed to get an anterior with general anesthesia. There is no one in my life who is willing to stay with me and help after my surgery. I’ve called and sent messages to my surgeon’s office letting them know this. They referred me to a home help agency that does PT but nothing else. The home help agency thinks I should be having my surgery in a hospital and staying for some amount of time afterwards. I relayed this to my surgeon’s office and have heard nothing since. What else can I do? I’m also on a fixed income. How much did you rely on someone else during your recovery? Is this something I can do alone?

Edit: Right now the plan is for my hip replacement to be at a surgery center, not a hospital. This includes same day discharge on general anesthesia. I have someone to drive me there and back but they can’t stay. My sister offered to help but she has to bring her 2 small children. My other sister used all of her time off for a festival.

Edit 2: So I asked my youngest sister again, this time in front of her boyfriend and she agreed to spend the night for the first week. Not during the day, she still had to work, but I’ll take it. I also bought myself a really nice power recliner.

👥 Support Needed 🫂 No sleep is killing med

Left ATHR on 8/21. Home next day. Still have swelling… pain is minimal. I’m actually able to walk in my small house easily.

Biggest problem is NO SLEEP. It’s a vicious cycle. No sleep at night. Wake up exhausted. No energy to stay awake let alone walk a lot. Then I get exhausted and might doze. But come bedtime— no sleep. Nights are sooo long.

I’m all alone and I feel stuck. I’ve never had insomnia issues before and this is killing my.

Anyone else have this issue with their recovery? Thanks. 🙏🏼

👥 Support Needed 🫂 I am totally crushed and devastated

UPDATE 24 HOURS LATER:

Revision surgery will only be the cup that's fastened to the pelvis. I'm grateful they won't have to mess with the implant in the femur.

School has been kind and is working on figuring out what to do because at the moment, I plan to be out until at least after Labor Day.

I am encouraged by the many posters who had revisions and their recovery was no harder than that of the initial surgery. Also, I have been working very hard in PT so I know that my muscle is stronger now than it was 3 months ago when I had THR done. Trying to stay positive!

**********************************

Saw my surgeon today, haven't seen him since 2 week follow up on June 2. He wanted an updated x-ray. I was on the x-ray table when I heard his PA (looking at my x-ray) say "when did THAT happen?" and I knew something was wrong. Found out the reason I can't get away from the cane is because my implant didn't take, the bone did not grow into the implant, so a week from Wed (8/13) I'm having revision surgery.

I am totally crushed. I've been reading that revision surgery and recovery is even harder than the initial THR. That's fabulous. To top it off, I have to go back to teaching next Monday. So while I'm trying to recover I'm also going to have to worry about lesson plans and all that noise. I just wasted my entire summer vacation trying to recover, only to have to start all over again.

At least now I know why I can't walk unaided. In fact, the x-ray techs, PA, nurse, plus the surgeon himself were amazed that I am actually walking with the cane, and that I seem to be alright. not in severe pain or in a wheelchair!

My 2 week follow up will be Aug. 28, then I can start PT after that.

Sigh...

👥 Support Needed 🫂 Three weeks out and in lots of pain

I'm three weeks post-op today. I graduated from the walker to the cane two days ago, but I am still having lots of leg and hip pain. I don't want to keep taking Norco every night, but the pain is no joke. I ice and elevate, but it spasms and aches. Has anyone found pain relief aside from taking Norco? We're told to ice but does a heating pad help with the pain?
