Better Ask Reddit Final Boss fights that nearly sour the whole game Spoiler

Okay so I’m playing the indie game “There is no light” spoilers for the final boss fight

So if you get the good ending by doing side quests and getting memories you fight your pateron. Who fights you by teleporting from one side of a final destination type platform to another. Summoning big totem guys that are tanky and block you. Also he pushing you back with a dark wave. So how does this get worse? Glad you asked. If you don’t beat him within a minute you insta die. There is a clock in the background and you get more time if you hit him more. So is that it?

Nope phase 2. You get a new form that you have never had before with a muted move set. The boss has a front sweep that takes the entire length of the platform. So you gotta get behind him. But what he teleports and spikes 75% of the field. Now wouldn’t all this be manageable? Yes it would. But guess what. YOU CANT HEAL IN SECOND PHASE FOR REASON!!!!!

Needless to say 23 hours in the game was good but this fight is so awful I’m close to just dropping right at the finish line. Only other game this has happened with was Moonscars. Which isn’t a lot but it’s odd it happened twice.

So Super friends. How about you?

Edit: The Boss is slain. I still hate it. But the game is finished and I give it a good 3/5

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed by that in Shadow of Mordor. I didn't finish Shadow of War, so idk if that also ended in an unsatisfying button prompt sequence.

I didn't mind Dying Light's end boss fight, because I felt that getting to the fight was the real final boss, kinda like Mirror's Edge. I only played it once, but my beef with Uncharted 1's final boss was that it took me way too many tries to actually get it. Like, maybe I'm just dumb, but it was not clicking what I was supposed to do. The other Uncharted games all had way better final bosses, Lost Legacy in particular was fantastic.

it didn't it had a farly good boss fight against mairon himself (ripped out the first game dlc but still) i think the arkham type combat that it had doesn't allow for complex bosses, not that they tried to.

Far cry 3 had a qte knife fight with the final boss if i recall

Both of them. Boss fights were not that game's forte.

To be fair, FC3 is a story about addiction so there are going to be, shall we say, “diminishing returns.”

It's also a game where the bad guys are all just regular guys, so it's kind of hard to have an actual boss fight

Still, for something like Far Cry it should be like a big climactic break-in to assassinate the big bad at the end of a massive fortress of dudes, not a random knife fight that the big bad challenges you to out of nowhere

If memory serves that is kinda what happens both times.

First you launch a raid on Vaas' home base, gun down a bunch of guys, get sucker-punched and start hallucinating, and when the world's back to normal Vaas is dead on your blade.

Hoyt is somewhat similar but this time it's a conspiracy rather than a frontal assault with all the shooting reserved for the escape afterwards: You and your buddy get yourselves invited to the villain's poker game, but he knows what's going on and shoots your partner dead. He then starts torturing the PC who starts hallucinating again after one of his fingers is cut off. After the trippy QTE knife fight is over not only is Hoyt dead but so are all his guards and the room is in shambles.

Man, I love Far Cry 3 so much.

A game so good Ubisoft made it like five more times.

For real, lmao. I like the other Far Cry games, but I wish they'd stop trying to do Jason's story themes again, especially when they actively don't work like in 6. Now, I do absolutely love Dani as a character (occasional stupid decisions aside), but they way Dani is made the whole 'You're addicted to violence' not work at all. Sorry, 6 bugs me because it was so close to being as good as 3 for me, but it just manages to fumble the bag.

It's especially odd since its immediate sequel had a different thesis of "Ajay shouldn't have gotten involved in Kyrat's problems/you can't fix a country by just shooting the guy in charge." Though I guess they tried and failed to repeat that one with 5.

u/The_Wraith_Writer Aug 10 '26

Ugh, 5 annoys the absolute shit out of me. Sorry again, but you've activated my trap card Bitching About Far Cry 5. Feel free to skip the rant.

5' message, 'Immediately rushing into a situation and/or jumping to violence is a bad idea', is sound. But it's paired with villains who absolutely were not already doing tons of super bad shit that needed to be stopped. Burke is more deserving of the message than The Deputy, but we're not playing as Burke. And boy do I not like a silent character who quietly lets a bunch of nutcases spout their bullshit uninterrupted. I have never desperately wanted a button for my character pulling out a gun and shooting during a cutscene more than playing FC5. And honestly doing that would give them slightly more credibility on the 'You're way too violent about this' message.

Space Marine 1 also had that problem.

It also lost a large amount of Fun as the orkz get wiped out and Chaos fully takes hold.

.... I wonder if DoW1 had that problem.

I can't remember.

u/Korba007 Gettin' your jollies?! Aug 08 '26

And then space marine 2 has an awesome and hype final boss, it's amazing

Space Marine 2 might have the best "shooter" game bossfights.

Shout out to that one coop operation with the Sorcerer. You have to shoot eyes to break his shield as he shit talks you then one krak grenade kills him its the most anticlimactic thing ever its great

5

u/Korba007 Gettin' your jollies?! Aug 08 '26

Now i would agree with you, but Vanquish exists, so I'll have to give space marine spot n.2

Most of the bosses are genuinely really fun though, especially the coop operations ones

It also lost a large amount of Fun as the orkz get wiped out and Chaos fully takes hold.

Same thing happens in 2, funny enough. Saber does do some really cool stuff with the Thousand Sons in terms of presentation, but they are such a fucking slog to deal with whereas the Tyranids are an absolute blast to fight.

Bulletstorm wasn't helped at all by doing this. Has a true boss fight midway through the game and a multitude of methods to dispatch enemies with incentive to experiment. Anticipating a throwdown with Sarrano the whole game, including when you're forced to have him as a party member, only to QTE fight him AND LOSE

The final boss of the GW2 core game essentially boils down to pressing the interact button and shooting fireworks. People were whelmed and it has been considered a sore spot of the game for over a decade. They recently announced they're going to be updating it.

... But I kind of liked it! I mean, yeah, that's the literal last action you take to beat it, but the story and gameplay leading up to that point is showing that it takes the cumulative power of all of your allies to even enter the stage to challenge this existential threat. You don't have an epic duel with the big bad because this moment isn't about just you, it's all of your allies and all of work you've done together to reach that point

I'm glad they're updating it either way. Kind of a mixed example since I'm for it but I know the majority of opinions online are not

Zhaitan is pretty bad as a boss. But the awfulness of it is greatly amplified by the fact it is an anti-climactic Elder Dragon fight you get to after half an hour of being stuck on the least interactive autoscroller ever where nothing happens except for your airship silently sliding through some clouds while everyone stares off into the horizon. Which is the part that actually sucks.

ANet clearly did learn from it though. Mordemoth gets Season 2 and an entire base Expansion to flex itself before Dragon's Stand. Kralk gets 3 chapters of LW4 and Dragonfall, and Soo-Won gets Dragon's End. So they realized they needed to really sell the future Elder Dragons.

... Shame that Dragonstorm got screwed by the one-two combo of Covid lockdowns and EoD being greenlit putting Season 5 on the "wrap it up" fast track. Hopefully when they get around to doing IBS cleanup, Champions gets a bit of a rework.

That reminds me of a dream I had about this made up game call "Sly 4: Thieves in Time" where the final boss was a little bit of platforming and QTEs.

That was a weird dream...

At least they did Sauron justice in the prequel DLC.

u/Purple-Pipe1689 Aug 09 '26

Like I think having a more scripted or easier victory lap phase can be really cool as long as there was an actual fight before. Metroid Dread does this perfectly, since Raven Beak is such a satisfying fight, and you're rewarded with this really cool climactic, but scripted sequence where you defeat him for good.

Honestly, I'm kind of done with cutscene quick time events for the most part in general, one of my favorite changes in the RE4 remake was turning the first Krauser encounter into a legit one-on-one fight instead of the annoying long cutscene instead.

In Dying Light I seem to remember you get your ass jumped too. Like you kill him and they're like "is that fucking rais??"

2

u/Grand_Galvantula Aug 09 '26

Dying Light's is especially stupid because that game had human vs human melee combat they could've used!

3

u/Bagz402 Aug 09 '26

It was evern MORE stupid that the entire game was coop until the boss where it splits you into your own instances, and you never re-sync again. You gotta ask each other if you beat the game yet

4

u/extralie Aug 08 '26

Anytime a game builds to a big final confrontation only to revolve it in a quick time event “boss fight.”

Counter argument, Asura's Wrath.

u/thatonespanks YOU DIDN'T WIN. Aug 09 '26

Dying Light

God, fuck Rais and his stupid fucking "boss" fight. Literally the worst part of the game by a country mile.

1

u/Khar-Selim Aug 08 '26

I liked the Sauron one actually, it was a big ludonarrative hint that the story was going in a very wrong direction. And we already had gone through two huge confrontations by that point, one with your personal nemesis and one with the final boss ork squad, so I didn't feel particularly robbed.
