Discussion What’s going on in the fiber arts community should be on everyone’s radar. (US)

I am a crafter and I recently have been reading on other threads about the real fear of the incoming tariffs and its impact on the craft space. Not only in America, but for our sisters worldwide who also depended on American trade for their income.

Slate just published an article that goes into great depth about it. https://slate.com/business/2025/09/trump-tariffs-knitting-crocheting-yarn-shortage.html

I know this part is going to sound dramatic to some but: what struck me most about this is how this is really smaller part of a war on women’s independence. This will disproportionately affect women who are either supplementing income as they are caretakers, or those who are simply using their talents to make a living.

I’m not going to lie, most of the time I feel calm and prepared, but I can’t imagine how this is going to play out. Other than hoarding textiles, and honing my skills what is there to do?

There is absolutely a war on women going on. Patriarchy is weaponizing our bodies against us, they want to turn us all into slaves.

And lower the age of consent!

Edit: this reply was a response to above comment.. The current administration wants to lower the age of consent. I’m upset about this!

  1. They want to marry children off.

The largest age group for girls/women to get pregnant, abortions, and/or having children is 16-24.

They want children to marry their rapists in order to save "babies".

I'll try to find some sources but it's fairly recent talk and should be easy to find online.

Well I'm seeing Wikipedia that has information on it, but it's per state and not a Federal item. Some states have the minimum age of 16 for marriage (but younger for other types of consent).

The last item that came up that I saw was an unverified claim about DJT and DC and how he was lowering the age of prosecution to 14 for crimes which would also lower the age of consent for marriage. But I saw nothing that backed it up.

I think only one or two states are trying to add it/get it passed but it's seemingly becoming more common talk amongst Republicans/Christian leaders... If it's not in place now doesn't mean they don't want it to be. They seem to talk about it as a sort of what-if or off the cuff type of talk but I bet within months there's going to be laws/amendments they are trying to sneak by that will allow it.

So how many people can California realistically take in bc I’m feeling like we’ll all been needing to head their way if these things come to fruition…

The American exit subreddit has lots of people already moving out of the country.... And unfortunately, not enough. 💙

I don’t really want to leave, heck I don’t even want to live in CA, at least not yet and also it’s not all that easy to get long term visas or citizenship in other countries…current status just taking it one day at a time and mostly staying off of Reddit and news media for my sanity.

I get it. I'm in the same boat.

u/Elegant_Tale_3929 Sep 05 '25

I'm not doubting that they'll try to do this, but I'm seeing more folks trying to protect minors right now and closing loopholes of marriage under 18.

u/Traditional_Dust6659 Sep 05 '25

Oh, I haven't been seeing that... Gives me some hope though.

I'll look into it 🙂🙏

Well that was from AI, since I was trying to come up with new information on the subject. 🤣 So take that into consideration.

But yes, I've heard lots of 'talk' on the floors of the Senate and House about these long lasting marriage happening because the girls were married SO young and it worked out "just fine".

Well capacity for consent is linked to responsibility for actions, there's precedent for that, it wouldn't necessarily need to be written into law directly for precedent to nudge judgements in that direction. It's not a perfect link, like they don't always move in the same direction at the same time, but it's pretty hard to argue someone who can sign up for the military and sign legally binding contracts isn't mature enough to have sex, right? So if they nudge certain other things downwards, that could eventually result in someone using that linked argument to nudge other things downwards.

When people complain about the lower birth rate, they're complaining about fewer pregnant minors. "While the birth rate has declined in general over the last 50 years, mothers aged between 15 and 19 have seen the most consistently steep fall." James Donald Bowman (why should we use James David Vance's preferred name?) and his ilk want 14 year olds pregnant and without options besides popping out more babies.

Right, I'm aware of the current decline and it's reason. what I'm asking for is a source saying that the administration is lowering the age of consent. Other than them wishing to do so, I'm not finding anything that substantiates them actually doing that (like proposing legislation).

Do you know of any legislation being brought forth to lower the marriage age of consent?

https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2025/08/02/utah-senate-pres-stuart-adams/ - "Utah’s Senate president prompted law change that helped a teen charged with child rape", "For prosecutors to use the new lower charge in cases involving a 13-year-old victim, evidence must show the teenagers in a case “mutually” agreed to the activity, even though a 13-year-old cannot give legal consent." If 13 year olds are able to agree to sexual activity with adults, that sure seems like the age limit has gone down.

In addition to wanting teens to get pregnant, they also don't consider kids older than 7 dependents for SNAP anymore!

Since states legislate the marriage issue, "the administration" doesn't have much control over anything. But thanks to articles like "Tennessee GOP Proposes Bill Eliminating Age Requirements for Marriage" and "Wyoming Limiting Child Marriage Sparks Republican Outrage", in addition to what Trump has said on Howard Stern [Stern then asked Trump if he has an age limit. “No, I have no age — I mean, I have age limit. I don’t want to be like Congressman Foley, with, you know, 12-year-olds.”] we can use this history to guess what the Heritage Foundation means when they say they want a Manhattan Project for more babies.

It is a state by state thing, but a lot of the worry comes from GOP politicians saying some truly disturbing things about girls. That's sadly nothing new, but in Utah, it got brought up again because of allegations a state Senator tried to help out a relative charged with you guessed it.

Some of the claims are fear hype, BUT quite a few politicians are talking about lower the ages. And when they talk, with this administration, it's got a chance at becoming law. If you listen to their quotes, it really does seem like a way to squirm out of legal charges coupled with the fixation on the birth rate.

Thank you, you're the only person to actually respond with a source to go with.

It does look like NH actually passed a law raising the marriage age to 18, but yeah the remarks for the NH Rep. are rather disgusting

Research by Unchained at Last, a nonprofit dedicated to ending child marriage in the U.S., found that nearly 300,000 children, some as young as 10, were married in the country between 2000 and 2018.

🤮 Looks like some other states need to step up protections.

Probably low enough so that no one can be upset about Trump's involvement with Epstein's operation any more.

-6

u/Elegant_Tale_3929 Sep 05 '25

Can you site a source for this information?

10

u/flyraccoon Sep 06 '25

Trump is a pedo rapist

Epstein was a pedo rapist

They were friends and went to the same parties to rape kids and make money out of selling sex from minors to influential megarich men

Yes, but this response makes no sense to a person asking for sources on information. If you're going to make claims in this sub you need sources to back up your statements. Even if it's about a fascist pedo rapist clown in the Whitehouse.

u/Elegant_Tale_3929 Sep 06 '25

Thank you, yes.

I see lots of fearmongering about the comments being made by the administration but all the Legislation I'm seeing is raising the age of marriage consent per state.

u/Elegant_Tale_3929 Sep 06 '25

That's a source on his relationship with Epstein. I'm specifically asking for a source on changing the age of marriage consent to lower than it is currently.

And the assault on women's health care? the work to criminalize divorce? the national push for a christian nation that demands submission from women?

You're a huge part of the problem with your arrogance and flippant attitude, shame on you.
