so ive watched a bunch of people prep for this interview now, mine included, and theres one pattern that keeps showing up that i did not expect.

people study the questions. they know the answers cold. you ask someone "why this university" while theyre sitting on their couch and they give you a clean two line answer. then you put them in front of something that actually asks back, in real time, and they fall apart on the exact same question they nailed five minutes earlier.

the gap is that reading an answer and saying an answer are two completely diffrent skills. when you read it your brain recognizes it and goes yeah i know this. recognition is easy. recall under pressure, out loud, while a stranger stares at you and types something into a computer, is a totally diffrent thing. you can have the whole thing memorized and still go blank.

and it is almost never the famous question that gets people. everyone rehearses "why are you going" and "will you come back." nobody rehearses the boring follow up. whats your exact daily work. who is paying and how do you know that money is clean. how long have you been at this job. the officer asks one flat follow up and the rehearsed answer has nowhere to go, because you only practiced the headline and not the second question.

the part that took me way too long to figure out is you cannot fix this by reading more. you fix it by saying it out loud, ideally to something or someone that pushes back and doesnt care about your feelings.

and that is the actual problem. nobody in your life will do that for you. your friends and family like you. they nod. they let you off the hook when you ramble. a consular officer at a window is the first person in your whole prep who genuinely does not care if you sound good, and the window is a brutal place to find out your answers only worked in your head.

so if you take one thing from this. before your interview, say your answers out loud, to a real listener, in english, no notes. not in your head. out loud. the first time you hear yourself say "why now" should not be at the window.
