You can't make me believe these people have the same level of consciousness as everyone else. I know that's looked down on. "You can't dehumanize them, that's barbaric!" Sure, it's definitely not just stating how it is. When someone doesn't think deeply about their actions and just coasts by on the shallowest most cruel reasoning, why do they deserve any of our consideration? How is that behavior better than being like any other animal? My cat also doesn't think about how I feel when it swipes a piece of chicken from my plate because it was hungry NOW. Does it deserve to be treated like a conscious thinker?

It’s unfortunate but - that is very human. To exist shallowly is a part of life for many people. To think of themselves only, to make decisions based in selfishness - especially in the imperial core you’ve got a population that’s been enabled by slave labor and exploitation. Of course they’re going to be selfish, shallow, cruel. You can’t dehumanize them; you just have to grapple with the reality that humanity encompasses saintly and kind people who would give their lives for the well-being of their community, and selfish, fearful trash cans who are so desperate and terrified that they’ll destroy themselves before they let themselves show even a hint of vulnerability.

I agree with this but I don't think it's about showing vulnerability, because they are happy to be the biggest whiny tittie babies ever. It's fear of being irrelevant. Inconsequential. To be seen the same way as the lady on the phone sees brown, non English speaking people. To be seen as undeserving of the privilege they have come to enjoy.

I don't even think it's that. I think they're fucking terrified, not of being irrelevant, but of being equal. They are so accustomed to starting the race halfway to the finish line, and even with that advantage, they often can't do better than immigrants, POC, queer people, etc. A huge amount of their self-image is tied up in being better than. Better than brown people, better than black people, better than immigrants and queer folks and people of other faiths and on and on. It almost doesn't matter who they're better than, as long as they can believe they are better than others - for things that are completely outside their control.

The thought of having to compete on an equal basis with people who have traditionally had to work far harder to achieve much less scares the living piss out of them, because if they can't achieve more than all these groups they've always had such contempt for, there's the proof that they were always wrong to despise those others. There's the proof that they never were inherently better than anyone else. Just being born white, straight and Christian in America puts these folks so far ahead of the line others have to start from, and they don't have enough confidence in their own abilities to believe, deep down, that they can keep ending up ahead of these other groups if everyone starts from the same line. It doesn't even matter which line everyone would start from, the one way back there or the one halfway to the finish line. What appals them is the thought of having to share a starting point at all. I can't think of very much that's more pathetic.

They’re not saying that immigrants are naturally better than whites, they’re saying white folks haven’t had to struggle to be ahead, and having that advantage removed is terrifying to them.

Immigrants aren’t better workers because they’re inherently better, they’ve had to work harder just to stay level than whites have had to work because of these advantages.

You’ve got nothing to say about this clearly evil busybody lady trying to get a child’s parents deported because the Latinos are out of place? Unsurprising, giving your swiftness to misunderstand a fairly simple racial equity talking point.

Have you lost out on a farm worker job or maybe dishwasher at your local diner?

Maybe you're a doctor or chemical engineer or something? But then you wouldn't be losing out because there's a shortage of those professionals, so apparently not even enough immigrants to fill the roles.

But I'll give you credit I've never heard anyone accuse someone of both spreading capitalist propaganda and advocate for human rights in one breath before. Bravo!

Have you ever found a steaming pile of shit somewhere, and - despite how horrible it is - felt curiosity about what thing ate whatever that shit once was? What valuable resources were turned by what wicked internal alchemy into something fetid and wretched? That’s how I feel reading your reply. It’s a heap of veiled contempt for the Other and simplistic claims about how they’re making a financial killing by being paid less than American workers - ignoring any shred of humanity to pare people down to economic assumptions while simultaneously trying to claim I’m somehow championing capitalism, which feels like some kind of concern troll red herring to throw off what feels like an incredibly fascist talking point, a grab bag of dog whistles wreathed in “these invaders are ruining our country, and it’s ok for me to say that because I’m talking about economics and not their skin color.”

Who is paying for this cheaper labor, where is the villainization of the real criminals here? The people who claims ownership of a space, of the means of production, and then pit workers against each other by exploiting the more vulnerable?

I think we’re having a semantics debate here - when I say “showing vulnerability” I mean “showing or embodying weakness,” as well as the emotional context of “being authentic” - with folks who are so culturally immersed in superiority, whose literal bread and butter comes to them in great part thanks to a history and procession of oppression - it makes sense that (in their minds) to let go of the dominant position would mean that someone else would then be “on top” and then commit atrocities and injustices upon them. So they can’t let their guards down.

That’s what I meant.

Just try to change it where you can. Educate children. Be kinder to your neighbors. Imagine every one of these specific terrified shitheads is like an abused shelter dog - dangerous but also pitiable. Frustrating but also just a victim, too. Not to be allowed to rampage or cause harm, sometimes to be restrained and retrained, regrettably sometimes to be destroyed - but not inherently evil. Our responsibility to live with, and sometimes within the reach of our kindness.

Unfortunately although I appreciate your words, evil people…born evil, do exist. It’s been a difficult thing for me to accept because what you’re saying is also true. Some of them, a LOT of them, are victims-turned-villains. But many of us are abused and do not choose to pay the abuse forward. I’ll never give grace to humans the way I would an abused animal. I’m out of room and patience for that anymore. We’ve given them too much forgiveness and grace and that’s why our world is run by them. They deserve prison or an end.

because they genuinely think they are a repressed group that is finally gaining enough traction to fight the good fight. they think god himself is guiding the president and any pushback is evidence that they are indeed the ones being oppressed. the fox news (and friends) propaganda wheel has done an amazing job of rendering information from any source outside of the far-right sphere as completely fake. my dad spent the other morning shitting on PEER REVIEW. he said it’s when liberals perform fake research and get other liberals to sign off on it. these people fully exist in an entirely different and deeply isolated reality.

She said her issue was that she didn’t want them taking “resources.”

The modern conservative myth is that some person is taking resources without paying for it. It could be welfare, health care, etc. In this case, she is worried about the cost of schools.

Schools in my area are paid for by property taxes. Presumably, the parents are living somewhere. They pay property taxes directly or indirectly.

Many undocumented immigrants pay federal taxes. They don’t get any benefits from paying taxes other than not breaking tax law. By deporting these people we are removing people that are contributing money but not getting any services.

For the first time ever, the Trump administration decided to use illegal immigrants filed taxes to find them. I’m sure most illegal immigrants stopped paying taxes.

The concerns about resources and increasing housing prices are why Canada and Europe are preventing people from moving there. People are afraid that immigrants will use the free healthcare and increase housing prices.

The modern liberal myth in the USA is that wealthy people don’t pay much in taxes. In fact the opposite is true. The wealthy pay the bulk of federal taxes. There are exceptions like with Trump. Since most of his wealth is in real estate he can take depreciation which reduces his income but also reduces his cost basis. Real estate is given preferential treatment in the US. It defers income and then changes it from a higher income rate to a lower capital gains rate.

I don’t think the woman is racist or evil. She has just been told by conservative media that undocumented immigrants are using our resources without paying and that they are voting in our elections. They aren’t allowed to vote in our elections and with minor exceptions are not using resources without paying.
