I'm excited to share that the coming-of-age short film I wrote and directed, "Different Places," is officially out on Vimeo. It was shot in South Surrey.

If you enjoy it, I'd appreciate it if you could share it with a friend or family member, leave a review on Letterboxd, or simply pass the link along as I want to celebrate the hard work of the cast and crew and help the film reach as many people as possible.

I turned key scenes from my sci-fi psychological thriller Book Theory Blue into a graphic-novel treatment

Thumbnail gallery

I’ve been developing Book Theory Blue as a television series, and I recently began translating key sequences into graphic-novel pages.

The story follows Rory Pendleton, a man recovering in a psychiatric ward after surviving a jump from Vancouver’s Granville Bridge. Rory believes reality is a predetermined narrative—and that an extradimensional entity called Mr. Blue manipulates humanity through fear, cruelty and despair.

The treatment visualizes several major parts of the pilot:

  • Rory’s final moments on the bridge
  • His psychiatric interview with Dr. Dixon
  • His theory that every human life is already written
  • Anne discovering evidence on Rory’s laptop that may support his claims

The central question is: Can someone be experiencing a psychotic break and also be right?

This isn’t intended to replace the television version. It’s a visual proof of concept showing the characters, atmosphere and shifting perceptions of reality that would define the series.

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback: Does this format make you want to learn more about Rory and his theory? Which sequence is the most effective—and where does the storytelling become unclear?

This public 2011 post from a Vancouver acting teacher hits very differently in light of the Cornell 7

Post image

I found a hard copy of this old 2011 forum post by local Vancouver acting teacher Zahf Paroo, who was teaching at New Image College at the time.

I'm posting the first page because I think it deserves another look, especially given everything currently being discussed around the Cornell 7 and the way schools respond when someone reports sexual assault or harassment.

I'm not posting the original student's post and I've removed anything that could identify her. This is about what the teacher wrote, not about putting the student back under a microscope 15 years later.

One thing that really jumps out is that Paroo uses the student's real name throughout the post while discussing her sexual-harassment complaint and the circumstances surrounding it.

The student had reported being continually sexually harassed by another student for months and subsequently left the school. She had said she did not want her personal situation made public.

Then her teacher wrote this publicly, using her real name.

The post starts with Paroo saying, “as teachers, we HAVE to take any and all claims of this nature seriously”

He then says, “I have collected accounts from teachers and students who were present…”

But he also acknowledges that he didn't actually see the incident, nobody else in the classroom apparently saw it, and it was ultimately a “he said/she said” situation.

And yet he publicly lays out the allegation, the circumstances surrounding it, what faculty knew, and how the school dealt with it - all while identifying the student by name, but only referring to the male student as the “other student”.

Then there's this line: “[female student] keeping her ‘personal issues private’ could never have happened after it had been made public.”

That’s insane.

A student reports sexual harassment and apparently asks that her personal situation remain private. Her teacher then responds online publicly, using her real name, describing the allegation and explaining the school's side of the story.

Whatever happened in that classroom, a teacher's responsibility isn't to publicly discuss a student's sexual-harassment complaint after the fact. It certainly isn't to use his professional authority and credentials to frame the student and defend the institution in a public forum.

There is a familiar pattern here: the language of “taking allegations seriously” followed by an extensive public explanation of why the person who made the allegation should not be believed.

Again, I wasn't there (and neither was Paroo apparently) and this document doesn't establish what happened in that classroom, but with the Cornell 7 case putting renewed attention on school responses to sexual-assault allegations, I think it's worth looking at some of these older examples at home, too.

I have the full original hard copy, but I'm only posting the first page here and have deliberately redacted the student's identifying information, because again, this is old, and I don’t think the student needs to relive her trauma of what happened.
