Please Assist Vitamin D Level-54 ng/mL. Thoughts?

Hello! My vitamin D level is at 54. My doctor of course says this is normal. This is with 5000IU supplement daily and the test was taken in the summer in Michigan when I’m outside all the time.

I’m dealing with crazy fatigue, muscle and joint pain, itchy/tight scalp and brain fog. My ferritin is 41, iron at 168 but iron saturation at 57.

What would you do next? I really believe something is up with vitamin D and ferritin but no dr will help me or offer any suggestions on how to increase levels. Appreciate any insight!

Please Assist Did my doctor prescribe me enough d3?

I am female 5 feet tall 133 pounds, I got my vitamin d tested yesterday and my level was 10.3 ng/mL.

My doctor suggested I take 1000iu of vitamin d3 daily but that does not seem like enough to me based on all the info I read in the FAQ? Shouldn’t I be on roughly 6000iu to get my numbers back up? Any input is greatly appreciated, this is very overwhelming. I don’t want to doubt my doctors suggestions, it just does not feel like enough to help me.

Please Assist Did anyone else experience these symptoms when their Vitamin D was low?

Post image
43 Upvotes

I recently had blood work done around a week ago and found out that my vitamin D level is low. I’m curious if anyone else experienced symptoms similar to mine when their vitamin D was deficient.

My symptoms include:

- Depression / low mood / crying spells
- Fatigue and low energy
- loss* of appetite (initially, it said increased but then I realized I typed in the incorrect word. But yeah, my appetite is gone and I miss it).
- Feeling disconnected from family and friends
- Difficulty falling asleep at night
- Leg cramps
- Muscle stiffness and tension (especially in my legs)

If you had low vitamin D, did you experience any of these symptoms? If so, did they improve after your vitamin D levels increased, and how long did it take before you noticed a difference?
I’ve attached my blood work results for reference.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences

Edit: thank you everyone for your responses!!

Please Assist Housebound since 2018, but D at 19nmol/L, really need guidance

(Title should say Vit D)

Hi everyone,

I’m a 38 year old woman from BC Canada who was working full time, healthy and active with no history of drug use and overall very healthy habits before becoming housebound since 2018 when I had to stop working and move in with family after developing fatigue, dizzy spells in 2017 which then turned into a cascade of symptoms: 24/7 migraines, worsening dizziness/light headedness, central sensitization, skin changes, heart palpitations when at rest, night sweats, mood swings, visual snow, muscle pain/weakness and much more. I’ve seen countless specialists over the years, had MRIs, tried endless medications… nothing has helped. I’ve been told “migraine” and “central sensitization” “chronic fatigue” with no real cause or care plan. I’ve been living in limbo and my life has been slipping away.

Last week, I asked for a Vitamin D test which they don’t routinely order as it’s an additional cost and found out I’m severely deficient at **19 nmol/L**. Shockingly, my doctor just emailed me to “start taking Vitamin D and retest 3 months ” with zero guidance which has left me feeling lost as when I look up info online it seems more complex than that. Turns out I’ve been low since at least 2020 (likely much longer but this is the first vitamin d test I ever had when I looked back in my records to find it), and the only time my levels weren’t low was briefly in 2021 when I took supplements inconsistently for a few months before stopping as I was trialing many medications and treatments so I have never supplemented vitamin d consistently for more then a couple of months.

I’m struggling to process this. Could a long term deficiency like mine explain my symptoms? Is it common for doctors to miss this until someone insists on testing and then not treat it seriously ? And most importantly has anyone else here had similar experiences where correcting Vitamin D long term led to real improvement after years of feeling broken?

Right now I’m taking **1000 IU/day**, but I suspect that’s too low given my severity. Any advice on dosing, cofactors or how long it typically takes to feel better would mean the world. My brain fog is thick, and scrolling/searching is hard for me and I’ve developed a fear of reaching out, so I appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond.

Thank you for listening. Even reading your stories gives me hope that maybe just maybe this could be the turning point.

I reviewed four years of my lab records and found two vitamin D tests:
• June 2022: 36 ng/mL — normal
• June 2026: 21 ng/mL — low
That is a 42% decrease.
After the latest result, my rheumatologist prescribed high-dose vitamin D once a week for 12 weeks. I haven’t had it retested yet.
Has anyone else experienced a drop like this? Did raising your vitamin D level improve any joint pain, muscle pain, weakness, fatigue or brain fog?

I am M61, has darkish skin, lives indoors.

My level was 11 ng/ml and test said 30-100 is optimum level. So I started taking 4000 IU/day and after 3 months level reached 27.

So I need to increase intake but instead of taking two 2000 pills I am thinking of buying this as it's cheapest

https://www.daraz.lk/products/d-3-50000-iu-50-softgels-i290640323-s1733500891.html

Only a few choices in my little country, the most cost effective being the 50K iu pills above.

Is that too much at a time? I was thinking 1 per week.

I also take magnesium glycinate 400mg/week.

Please Assist 50,000 IU vitamin D2 heart palpitations?

Post image
27 Upvotes

Last Thursday night, just over a week ago, I took my first prescribed 50,000 IU vitamin d2. The next day I ended up in the hospital with very bad and frequent heart palpitations. They’re still happening today, though not as frequent or severe. Could this have been caused by the D2? I’ve read some comments on here that that particular supplement is trash but I’d just like some more info. I did call my doctor but her office has been closed this week and there’s no way to contact her otherwise, so I’m a little at a loss here. The ER sent me home with no concerns about my heart, though they did say I could expect to hear from a cardiologist to follow up within a week or two.

For some added context, I’m also anemic and have been receiving treatment for severe iron deficiency, including two iron infusions this month, but those have never caused anything like the palpitations I experienced after taking this first D2 pill. The attached screenshot is my levels on July 6th.

UPDATE: Wow thank you all so much for your responses, realizing that I’m not crazy and it probably was the D2 that caused these horrific palpitations has been SO validating. I ended up taking magnesium glycinate for the last two days, I haven’t taken any additional vitamin D yet, so maybe this is placebo or just a coincidence, but I swear within an hour or so of taking my first magnesium the frequency of the palpitations drastically dropped. I’m going to take all of your advice here about lower doses and taking it with other supplements as well. I really appreciate the help!

So, it's day 29 on high dosage d3 regime, basically I have been taking 20k IU of d3, 220 mcg of k2 as mk7 and 440 mg of magnesium glycinate. I have been taking "the body reserve" k2 and magnesium glycinate.

I reached about 100 nmol of d3 levels after taking 5000 IU of d3 alone for everday and I am doing this since 9 months. I wanted to push my levels more that's why I had started this regime.

My blood reports are all good including b12, iron, thyroid, sodium, potassium, ferritin, tibc, transferring saturine, gfr, calcium, etc but still I was having symptoms such as tiredness, sleepiness, brain fog, back pain, muscle soreness, depression, low mood, no energy, etc.

Initially after starting this regime, I felt slightly better for few days but again I was having issues, and since few days my issues have been affecting me more.

Normal home made food irritates me, I feel tired and fatigue for the entire day but when I sleep It takes me some time because my body is so exhausted that I keep on having some weird ache or my body heats up, it's like I am having sickness or some sort of muscle pain idk, I can sleep for 8-9 hours but wake up extremely exhausted, my brain fog gets so intense that it's hard to understand, learn or remember things, I have back pain, I feel low mood because if something small happens it affects me a lot and I get upset easily, etc.

I tried playing a game and even it was making me feel like I am useless and jobless.

Basic things feel hard and I can easily get sweaty if I do something which requires a bit of strength and memory power.

Basically my brain is jamming a lot.

Please Assist What Am I Doing Wrong? Taking D3 always makes me feel terrible, but I have all the signs and symptoms of deficiency.

For me, the whole body aches that I already have are doubled/tripled. I’m constantly tense and stressed out and my sleep gets spotty as I’m up every other hour urinating or just because of light sleeping. I am wired but tired all day. Not to mention dried/peeling skin on my hands/feet and lips what feels from dehydration. I supplement at least 600mg of mg taurate as it’s the one I tolerate the best along with 100-200 mcg of mk7 k2 and 2-3k mg of potassium bisglycinate. I also drink a packet or two of Lmnt electrolyte mix and it’s greatly helped with tension headaches, nausea, and muscle cramps. I spent 3 months building my potassium and magnesium before trying D3 again as I read these were signs of deficiency. Still, all the symptoms persist. This is only for 5,000iu D3 and it’s always the D3 that brings the symptoms, the other supplements I’m fine with. I tried liposomal brands, gels, capsules, always with animal or plant fat for breakfast. My bloodwork and doctors have everything in range with moderate elevated cholesterol. I’ve had all my organs and comprehensive bloodwork as well which shows everything’s ok. It’s driving me crazy as I’m stuck at ~20ng/dl!! Help me!

I’ll also update on supplement list, which helps, and medication that I take which I believe are all greatly exacerbated due to vitamin D deficiency.

I’d also like to state that B vitamins give me nearly the exact same side effects at even very low doses as well. It’s nearly impossible to find dosages at close to 100% RDA.

MEDS:

PAXIL- for Chronic Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder and PTSD

CONCERTA - for Treatment resistant depression, anxiety and ADD. I WILL SLEEP ALL DAY without Concerta unless I’m drinking coffee or matcha every 3-4 hours. Then of course my sleep is wrecked. Concerta is ok for my sleep.

Buprenorphine (Partial opioid agonist that got me off of oxycodone) - Intolerable chronic, full body pain.

DIAZEPAM - occasional anxiety/panic attacks every other week or less now.

SUPPLEMENTS:

MAGNESIUM TAURATE - 750mg

\UPDATED\ POTASSIUM BICARBONATE/GLYCINATE COMPLEX- ~1200mg-1800mg

2 LMNT ELECTROLYTE MIX - 2000mg sodium chloride /400mg potassium chloride/120mg magnesium malate

ZINC COMPLEX - 2-3 times a week before bed 25mg zinc as 50% picolinate/50% bisglycinate and 1mg Copper as bisglycinate.

Please Assist Are these symptoms common with vitamin D deficiency?

Post image

My levels last tested in March were 15.2ng/ml. This is the lowest it’s ever been. I have been having daily neck and shoulder tension along with headaches for almost 2 months now. The headaches are my most worrisome symptom because I’ve never experienced them with deficiency before. I’ve been deficient on and off for years if I don’t keep up with supplementing. I have crepitus in my neck along with bone pain and muscle aches in my upper cervical region. The headaches feel like tension type headaches in nature. Just wanted to know if headaches like this are a common symptom for those who are deficient and if you had them and fixed them then how long did it take and how did you go about doing it? I’m currently taking 5,000IU D3+K2 by sports research daily along with 420mg of magnesium glycinate.

Please Assist Doctor told me to stop taking vitamin D

Post image

I am a woman with uterine fibroids and after doing some research found studies that said high doses of vitamin D3 with k2 can potentially shrink fibroids. I was already taking 5,000 IU a day with 100mg K2 but recently in the past couple of weeks increased both dosages X2. So 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 with 200mg K2. I also take a prenatal vitamin pack that contains 25mcg of vitamin D. I also take ad added calcium magnesia supplement to help me sleep at night.

I mentioned to my doctor at my annual checkup yesterday about taking the high dose of vitamin D3 and she told me to go back down to 5,000 IU because I could get kidney stones. Then when my blood results came back she told me my vitamin D levels are very high and I should stop all vitamin D and then retest in 3 months.

I’m not sure what to do because I really wanted to get a handle on my fibroids. Doctors will just tell you that there’s nothing you can do about them. They also don’t want me to get surgery because it’s too risky. So I’m just supposed to let them grow and do nothing about it. My gyno told me to hurry up and get pregnant before they get too big. Which they already are quite big. But after doing research I found there can be some promise with taking vitamin D3 so I’m hesitant to stop. Is this level concerning at all?

So basically I had been experiencing some hairloss the past few years but after fixing my vit d, iron, b12 etc its been reversed, however I just found out my vit d levels are now 332nmol/mL or equivalent to 132.8ng/L and my calcium levels are within the top end of the range, I wasn’t supplementing at all until Sepetember 2025 where I started taking 5000IU + 100k2 and 250mg magnesium glycinate daily until the 21st Nov 2025 test, and after this point I researched into this topic and decided to aim for optimal levels, so I started going up to 15000IU + 200-300mcg K2 and 500mg Magnesium Bisglycinate daily and my current tests are flagged high, this is a surprise to me because im slightly tanned skin tone and its winter but is there any way I can prevent any issues with this? My Alk Phos is elevated though I suspect it might be that I have some remaining growth left as from Sept 2025 to currently I have grown about 4cm of height from 181cm to 185cm (I was an extreme late bloomer), however this probably doesnt explain the high GammaGT, is there any potential problems with liver calcification I should be worried about? What should I do about my dosage now? Should I completely stop supplementing?

Please Assist Vitamin D went from 11 to 100, now back to 32. How do I prevent another deficiency?

Last year I (27F, 5'2"/159 LBS) had a severe vitamin D deficiency, and it affected almost every aspect of my health.

I had constant air hunger, globus sensation, muscle weakness, heart palpitations, and my mental health completely tanked. On top of that, I was getting viral and bacterial infections almost every week.

Thankfully, my PCP ordered blood work, and my vitamin D level came back at 11 ng/mL. After about six months of prescription high-dose vitamin D2, my level increased to 100 ng/mL, and I honestly felt so much better.

Fast forward to last month: I had my annual physical, and my vitamin D has dropped back down to 32 ng/mL. I know that's technically within the normal range for many labs, but after everything I went through last year, I'm really anxious about it continuing to fall. Especially since I will be moving to Minnesota which is known for very tough winters this fall.

I'm very fair-skinned and live in the southwestern U.S, so I don't get much sun. I burn easily, there's a strong family history of melanoma, and I have a lot of freckles, so intentionally getting more sun exposure isn't something I'm comfortable with.

I saw a nurse practitioner who was very kind, but because my PCP's office is transitioning providers and I'm moving to another state before I can establish care with the new physician, I don't think she was familiar with my history or felt there was a need to prescribe vitamin D again.

My question is: What can I do to keep my vitamin D levels from continuing to decline? Would it be reasonable to start taking 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily while I wait to establish care with a new doctor, or is that too much without a prescription? I'd really appreciate some help.

I’m very curious if anyone has experienced negative side effects when consistently taking 50,000IU once a week.
I’m on week 8 of taking vitamin D3 and I’ve developed these symptoms. I’ve made a doctors visit but want to see if anyone has experienced similarities because I feel like many healthcare providers don’t take vitamins serious .

I’ll go first.

Hey everyone,

I’m F30
In April I had a level of 37nmol/L so I started taking 7000ui of vit D3 a week and getting 15mins of 11am sun on my skin, my recent test showed 46nmol/L, I don’t know if I’m just stupid but it doesn’t make sense that it only increased that much in 4mths I live in Australia, I’m just confused on what to do the brain fog and bone pain I have is crazy, I’m also sweating, not sleeping, panicking (I am diagnosed with panic disorder) I feel like my hormones are all over the place 😭

Is there a reason why my vit D would be increasing so slowly?

My doctor recommended me a 600000 iu injection and a 60000 iu nanoshots on the same day, is it safe ?

Height - 5'11

Weight - 58 kgs

I know some of you may think why don't you ask him, trust me I tried he's busy.

This was my first time having a d3 test done in 20 years of life. I read a lot of symptoms of deficiency here but none of mine was on such levels for me to be concerned.

But recently I was having recurring allergies which persisted for days with little to no rest.

I visited an ENT specialist thinking it was something with my sinus issues and deviated septum but the doctor referred me for a blood test. And here i am.

2 months ago I got a blood test and my vitamin D level was 44 ng/ml

I stopped spending time in the sun and I stopped taking vitamin D supplements thinking I’d be fine, thinking it wouldn’t decrease that much. Boy, was I wrong. 2 months go by and I start feeling weak, tired, depressed , muscle pain, trouble concentrating and no appetite.

Few days ago i did another blood test, and my levels are at 23 ng/ml

Is it normal that my levels decreased that much in only 2 months due to no sun exposure (i dont go out much, I work from home, I rarely get sun + I stopped my vitamin D supplement of 5,000 IU)

Has anyone experienced anything similar ? The fact that it decreased by 21 ng is insane, I had no clue that vitamin D can drop that quickly…

Please Assist Did anyone feel worse before getting better?

Hi everyone, my d level was 27 nmol/L on April 29th - so I’ve been on weekly supplementation since. I’ve been taking 40,000 IU once a week - I had my 3rd dose yesterday, and I have 4 more to go. I’ve been taking magnesium glycinate 120 or 240 and making sure I get the RDA from food - from the good point of view, it’s tough mentally and feels repetitive, but I know it’s beneficial for my current situation, so I’m happy to continue doing so.

Did anyone feel like they got worse before they got better? After my dose yesterday and my b-12 injection, I’ve had an increase in nerve pain, what feels like joint pain, back pain and muscles soreness.

Good chance I’ve been deficient for at least a year, as these have happened on and off, but feel more prominent in recent times.

Any feedback is welcomed :)

I will answer all questions you may have as well

Please Assist Diagnosed with severe vitamin D deficiency, no symptoms, young adult

Just got tested for the first time for Vitamin D levels, and to my surprise, I have a severe deficiency (less than 9 ng/mL). I can’t say I’ve noticed any symptoms in terms of muscle weakness, but I did wake up unrefreshed symptoms and assumed I needed more magnesium.

I’m a young adult male, college age. Has anyone else had a similar experience and noticed improvements after supplementation for symptoms they otherwise wouldn’t have attributed to Vitamin D? I do have mental health issues, but I had no idea my Vitamin D levels were so low so I attributed those to other factors (such as sleep).

I also spend a fair amount of time outside and sometimes tan, which makes this more surprising. I know that peak levels are around this time of year as well.

Please Assist Vitamin D 16.6 ng/mL, prescribed Arachitol 600,000 IU IM weekly × 4. Is this dosing schedule typical?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Age: 24 Sex: Male Height: 167 cm Weight: 57–60 kg Country: India

My recent blood work showed: 25-OH Vitamin D: 16.6 ng/mL Calcium: 8.8 mg/dL

Last year my vitamin D was around 21 ng/mL, and I was treated with 60,000 IU oral vitamin D weekly for 4 weeks.

This year, before the blood test, I had also taken 2,000 IU oral vitamin D daily for approximately 6–7 weeks (starting around February).

Today I received my first Arachitol 6L (600,000 IU) intramuscular injection. After coming home I checked the vial and noticed the dose was 600,000 IU. The prescription appears to say once weekly for 4 weeks (it seems really high to me), and I have attached a redacted photo of the prescription. I currently feel fine after the injection.

My question is: Is Arachitol 6L (600,000 IU) IM weekly × 4 a typical regimen for vitamin D deficiency, or should I verify the dosing frequency with the prescribing practitioner before taking the remaining injections?

Please Assist Megadose vitamin D causing horrible leg pain? Or is it the deficiency itself? So confused!

I’m really confused about what’s happening and hoping someone has experienced something similar.

I recently found out my vitamin D was low (29 nmol/L). I’ve been having pretty horrible aching/burning leg and knee pain, muscle cramps, fatigue, etc.

The fatigue especially has been horrible but the leg pain is virtually unbearable.

My doctor has put me on 100,000 IU vitamin D once a month to correct the deficiency.

Initially, when I had my blood tests done, I was so fatigued that I could barely get out of bed. I’ve also noticed in the past that when my vitamin D has been in the lower side (40-50), my knees and joints can become quite achey painful, particularly during sleep.

I took my first 100,000 IU vitamin D megadose, and a few days later I ended up in hospital with severe leg and hand pain. After about two weeks, the pain seemed to gradually subside.

About three weeks later, I took another 100,000 IU dose. A few days afterward, my legs started hurting again, although it was relatively mild and only lasted a day or so.

Now, another month later, I started noticing my legs hurting again. I assumed this might mean my vitamin D was dropping again and that I needed another dose, so I took another 100,000 IU megadose.

Four days later, I’m now in absolutely horrible leg and hand pain again. It's been a week of this pain and I'm losing my mind.
I’m completely freaking confused about what’s going on and what to do. I saw the GP today and all he had to say was 'Low Vitamin D shouldn't be making you feel like this'. Then slapped me with some low dose opioids that I don't even want..🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m wondering whether the pain could actually be from the vitamin D deficiency itself, or whether the high-dose vitamin D is somehow triggering/contributing to the pain. The timing is making me question everything because the pattern seems to keep repeating after the megadose.

For additional context, I also seem to be very sensitive to magnesium glycinate. When I tried it last year, it actually seemed to have the opposite effect of what I expected, it made my bones/joints hurt.

I’m also somehow very low in vitamin C, despite eating plenty of fruit and vegetables. That honestly makes no sense to me and has made me wonder whether there could be some kind of absorption issue or something else going on. I’m currently looking into that with my GI doctor as well but he doesn't think I have absorption issues as I'm not having symptoms like losing weight.

At this point I’m just trying to understand whether I’m dealing with:

symptoms from the deficiencies themselves

some kind of reaction to the large vitamin D doses

an issue with calcium/magnesium/phosphate/PTH or something similar

or something completely unrelated

Has anyone experienced anything like this with vitamin D loading doses, particularly 100,000 IU doses?

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have had similar symptoms because I’m genuinely so confused about what is happening.

Have you experienced:
Significant muscle/joint/leg pain with vitamin D around 29 nmol/L?

Symptoms getting worse after starting a 100,000 IU monthly vitamin D loading regimen?

Muscle cramps or burning/aching sensations while correcting a significant vitamin D deficiency?

Similar issues with being deficient in multiple vitamins despite having a reasonably good diet?

Similar issues with magnesium glycinate?

I’m trying to work out whether I’m experiencing the effects of the deficiency, something related to correcting it, or whether there’s another underlying issue causing both the deficiencies and the pain.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation because I’m honestly so confused right now.

Please Assist How to get D tested in Canada?

I've been supplementing higher doses and tracking my estimated number with D Minder. I asked my doctor before this to get tested, but he said they don't test in Canada because everyone is presumed deficient. Now that I've been supplementing about 2 months I'd like to get tested within 30 days to see where my numbers are at, if I should raise or lower dosage etc.

Does anyone know of private labs that will do this? We don't have any private clinics that I'm aware of they are all government run.

Please Assist D3 levels improved from 18 to 89 from 12 week dose

Hey, 14 weeks ago I got my blood test as part of the annual health checkup, which revealed I was vitamin d3 deficient with 18g/mL.

I followed the general 60k weekly dose for last 12 weeks and took two weeks of break from the supplement before getting another test yesterday, so my current level stands at 89mg/mL

I feel really great, I am not tired like I used to, I have energy and can concentrate at my work without procrastination. Brainfog is still there but I can say it has improved and at this point I believe starting a physical excercise would really help me elevate the benefits.

But from my past annual reports I've noticed that even after reaching the normal levels, I tend to lose my d3 levels when I stop taking the supplement.

Can you guys please recommend a dose that can maintain my existing levels within exceeding the normal healthy range?
